The Federal Ministry of Education has announced a major collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Academy to provide free digital skills training for Nigerian lecturers and students across tertiary institutions. This initiative, which aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), was unveiled in a press release dated 4th July, 2025.
According to the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the programme is “timely and transformative,” focusing on building 21st-century skills in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other emerging technologies. He emphasized that this training would position Nigerian graduates and educators for success in the global digital economy.
The pilot phase of the programme has already started with coordinators from 43 federal universities and polytechnics. The rollout now includes all federal, state, and private tertiary institutions, including colleges of education. Heads of institutions are required to nominate coordinators who will oversee lecturer training and student enrollment.
To ensure the programme is accessible to all, the Ministry has committed to covering 50% of the certification costs, with AWS covering the remaining 50%. This makes the certifications completely free for participants, eliminating financial barriers to digital literacy and tech skill acquisition.
Onboarding for the next phase of the digital programme will begin in the coming weeks. The Ministry urges institutions to register early to ensure placement in what is described as a ground-breaking opportunity.
“All Vice Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts of Private and State Tertiary Institutions are kindly requested to complete the Coordinator nomination form no later than Friday, 19th July 2025, by 5 PM prompt,” the Ministry stated.
