The Nigerian government has approved a new digital postcode and address system that uses maps and location technology to give more accurate addresses across the country.
The approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s national addressing infrastructure and support the growth of the digital economy.
The new system will be a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled alphanumeric postcode framework designed to improve address accuracy, logistics efficiency, and delivery services nationwide.
According to Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, the initiative aligns with the ministry’s broader digital transformation agenda.
“We will introduce a modern, geospatial intelligent addressing system that improves accuracy across the country and enables faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing,” Tijani said.
The system is being developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), led by Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi.
Beyond postal services, officials say the digital postcode system will support national planning, emergency response, logistics operations, and e-commerce growth.
“Foundational systems such as this play an essential role in building the infrastructure required to connect people, businesses, and services more efficiently across the country,” Tijani added.
The government believes the geospatial postcode system will help create a more structured national address database while enabling better delivery of public and private sector services.
