The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, 15 July, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. This announcement was made in continuation of the seven days of National mourning earlier declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
In a press statement released by the Ministry of Interior, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, confirmed the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government. He stated that the declaration followed the approval of President Tinubu.
According to the Minister, “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
He explained that the holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s long-standing service to the country, his key role in Nigeria’s democratic process, and his lasting impact on national development. Dr. Tunji-Ojo encouraged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity.
Citizens are also reminded that the national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the seven days of mourning, which began on Sunday, 13 July, 2025. This is in alignment with federal directives issued during national periods of mourning and respect.
The Federal Government has extended its deepest condolences to the family of the former President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
