The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), through its Bioresources Development Centre (BIODEC) in Odi, Bayelsa State, has successfully developed three new food products aimed at improving food security and promoting healthier diets in Nigeria.

The products, known as Bio-Mix Cereal, Bio-Pap, and Bio-Custard, were introduced as part of NBRDA’s commitment to applying biotechnology to enhance local food production, reduce hunger, and improve livelihoods. The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s food security and contribute to national development goals through innovative food technology and sustainable agriculture.

Bio-Mix Cereal is a whole-grain meal made from yellow corn, millet, guinea corn, soya bean, date, and groundnut. It is rich in fibre and naturally sweetened with date, offering benefits such as better digestion, weight management, and heart health. The cereal also supports protection against chronic diseases. Unlike regular cereals, Bio-Mix Cereal contains no refined sugar or artificial additives, making it a healthier and more sustainable option for consumers.

Bio-Pap, another new product, is made from yellow corn, millet, and guinea corn, and fortified with cloves. It provides a nutritious, antioxidant-rich food choice with anti-inflammatory properties that help lower the risk of chronic diseases. The product stands out from traditional pap due to its longer shelf life, lasting between six months and one year without losing quality.

Bio-Custard, the third product, is derived from high-quality corn starch and flavoured with natural vanilla. It offers a smooth texture and unique aroma while maintaining a wholesome and natural composition.

According to the NBRDA, the products are currently undergoing quality control and sensory testing, with samples distributed for consumer feedback on taste, texture, aroma, and overall satisfaction.

The Director General of NBRDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, said the development demonstrates the agency’s mission to create bio-based products that enhance livelihoods and contribute to Nigeria’s food sufficiency. “This aligns with the agency’s mandate to translate biotechnology research into tangible products and solutions that address hunger, malnutrition, and economic challenges,” he said.

The Coordinator of BIODEC Odi, Dr. Timi Wood, praised Prof. Mustapha’s leadership and continuous support, describing them as key factors behind the success of the project. He said the achievements reflect how biotechnology can bridge the gap between research and practical community benefits.

BIODEC Odi is one of 39 bioresources development centres under the NBRDA, focusing on the exploration of biological resources for biotechnology research, product development, and skills training. Under Prof. Mustapha’s direction, the agency continues to advance food innovation, wealth creation, and sustainable growth in Nigeria.
