Alausa said the release recognised the importance of the welfare, motivation and commitment of both academic and non-academic personnel to the stability and effective functioning of tertiary institutions. He added that the payment formed part of efforts to address legitimate welfare concerns, promote industrial harmony and minimise disruptions to academic activities.

The announcement followed the commencement of payment of the Consolidated Academic Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CATA) to academic staff on Monday. The ministry said the latest payment further demonstrated the Federal Government’s efforts to meet its obligations to personnel across the tertiary education sector.

According to the statement, the Federal Ministry of Education will continue to engage relevant unions, institutional authorities and other stakeholders to address outstanding issues, promote mutual understanding and foster a stable, productive and globally competitive tertiary education system.

The minister commended academic and non-academic staff, heads of institutions, unions and other stakeholders for their patience, understanding and continued cooperation with the Federal Government.

The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to policies and initiatives that prioritise staff welfare, institutional stability, human capital development and improved learning outcomes.

The development comes as the government seeks to sustain cooperation with unions and institutional authorities while strengthening the conditions required for effective teaching, research, administration and learning across the country’s federal tertiary institutions.

Who is covered

The CONTA payment covers non-academic staff of all Federal Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education for January to August 2026. The announcement concerns the allowance for non-academic personnel in federal tertiary institutions.

What the payment means

The release provides for the payment of the specified allowance period and forms part of the government’s broader efforts to address staff welfare issues and maintain stability within the tertiary education system.

The Federal Ministry of Education said the Federal Government remains committed to fulfilling its obligations, addressing legitimate outstanding issues and sustaining reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s education system.
