The Federal Government is set to launch the Youth Innovate Naija Initiative, a programme designed to help young Nigerians transform innovative ideas into viable businesses through mentorship, funding opportunities and investor connections.
The initiative, which will be implemented by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, is part of a broader effort to harness the creativity and entrepreneurial potential of Nigeria’s large youth population and channel it into enterprise development and national growth.
To support the rollout of the programme, the Ministry recently signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership (CIML) and Mind the Gap Television, partnerships expected to provide institutional backing and media visibility for the initiative.
Speaking during the signing ceremony at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Maryam Keshinro, who represented the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating practical opportunities for young Nigerians.
She described the programme as a strategic platform designed to harness the creativity and energy of the country’s youth.
“These initiatives are strategic platforms designed to channel the creativity and energy of Nigerian youth into enterprise development and national growth,” she said.
The Youth Innovate Naija Initiative will serve as a national platform where young Nigerians can present innovative ideas, develop prototypes and receive the mentorship required to turn those ideas into scalable businesses.
Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with investors, industry leaders and other stakeholders capable of supporting the commercialisation of their innovations.
According to Olawande, the programme was conceived in response to a growing recognition that young Nigerians are constantly developing creative solutions across various sectors but often lack the resources and platforms needed to bring those ideas to life.
He noted that students and young professionals across universities, polytechnics, research institutions and communities are generating groundbreaking ideas that could address real-life challenges facing the country.
However, he observed that many of these innovations remain underfunded and disconnected from opportunities that could help transform them into successful enterprises.
“Many of these ideas remain underfunded, uncommercialised or disconnected from platforms that could transform them into viable enterprises,” the minister said.
He explained that the Youth Innovate Naija Initiative aims to bridge that gap by providing young innovators with structured support systems that will help move their ideas from concept to market.
Under the programme, participants will be guided through stages of idea development, prototype creation and business planning while also receiving mentorship from experienced professionals and industry experts.
The initiative will focus on sectors considered critical to Nigeria’s economic development, including agriculture and food security, renewable energy, digital technology, healthcare innovation, smart infrastructure and the creative economy.
In addition to the innovation programme, the Federal Government is also introducing a youth-focused digital platform titled “The Youths Are Here.”
The programme, which will be produced in partnership with Mind the Gap Television, will be hosted on YouTube and will spotlight young innovators, entrepreneurs and development initiatives led by Nigerian youth.
The platform is expected to amplify youth voices while showcasing innovative ideas and projects emerging from different parts of the country.
According to the Ministry, the programme will serve as an important media channel for promoting youth-driven solutions and highlighting the impact of the Youth Innovate Naija Initiative.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CIML Nigeria, Dr Steve Longe, described the initiative as a pioneering programme that will bring together young Nigerians from diverse backgrounds and regions under a unified national innovation platform.
“The Youth Innovate Naija Initiative will provide inclusive opportunities for young Nigerians from both formal and non-formal education sectors to contribute to national development through creativity, knowledge and entrepreneurship,” he said.
Longe added that the collaboration between government institutions and professional bodies would strengthen the credibility and effectiveness of the programme.
Also speaking, the representative of Mind the Gap Community and Youth Development Foundation, Mr Tayo Olosunde, emphasised the role of digital media in ensuring that youth-focused initiatives reach a wider audience.
He said platforms such as “The Youths Are Here” will help highlight the work of young innovators while encouraging broader participation among Nigerian youth.
“Effective digital communication is essential to ensuring that development initiatives reach and positively impact young Nigerians across the country,” Olosunde said.
Through the Youth Innovate Naija Initiative and the accompanying digital media platform, the Federal Government hopes to create a stronger ecosystem that supports youth-led innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration across Nigeria.
