The Glo Foundation, in continuation of its “Giving Back Together” initiative, hosted thousands of women from different local government areas and communities around Warri, Delta State, at Urhobo College, Warri. At the event, the women were presented with packs of food items and other household essentials as part of Globacom’s intervention programme designed to cushion the effects of the current economic situation.
The initiative attracted women from communities including Warri North, Warri South, Aladja, Ughelli South, Udu, and Uvwie local council areas. Many of the women, including widows and the elderly, arrived while the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise was ongoing, in order to benefit from the scheme.
Globacom’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mrs Jumobi Mofe-Damijo, explained that the project was part of a broader plan to assist vulnerable people across Nigeria. She said, “Having held similar food donation initiatives in other states, it is now the turn of women in Delta to also be part of the programme.”
She further highlighted that the food drive was not random but focused on a key part of society. According to her, “The Food Drive is not just for anyone. It is targeted at the most vulnerable segment of the Nigerian society, that is, women and children. When we help them, we are helping the society at large.”
In addition to the Warri outreach, Globacom announced its sponsorship of the 2025 edition of the Ofala Festival, which will take place in Onitsha, Anambra State, in October. The festival is a yearly cultural event performed by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.
The celebrations will span two days, beginning with the Iru Ofala on October 17 and followed by the Azu Ofala on October 18. At a press briefing held at Ime Obi, Obi’s Palace, Onitsha, the Ofala Festival Organising Committee revealed Globacom’s continued support for the event.
The company stated that it has consistently backed the Ofala Festival since 2011, in recognition of its role in preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage. Globacom noted that the festival has the potential to create employment opportunities and boost revenue generation. The telecom giant reaffirmed its commitment to take the festival to the global stage, underscoring its belief in culture as a tool for economic growth.
