The HelpMum CareCode Hackathon 2.0 is now open for applications, inviting Nigerian innovators to develop practical, scalable solutions that address critical challenges in maternal and infant healthcare. With a total prize pool of up to ₦10,000,000, the initiative is designed to support bold ideas that can improve healthcare outcomes for mothers and newborns across the country.
Organised by HelpMum, the hackathon seeks to bring together a diverse group of participants including software developers, AI specialists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and recent graduates in the tech ecosystem. The focus is clear—build innovative, low-cost solutions that can be implemented and scaled within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
About the Hackathon
HelpMum continues to drive innovation in maternal and infant health by leveraging technology and community-based solutions. Through the CareCode Hackathon 2.0, the organisation aims to uncover new approaches to challenges such as maternal care delivery, newborn health monitoring, nutrition, and access to quality healthcare services.
Participants are expected to develop solutions that are not only innovative but also practical and sustainable beyond the hackathon stage. A key requirement is the integration of HelpMum’s Open Source Innovations into submitted projects.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the hackathon, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be resident in Nigeria
- Must be between 18 and 35 years old
- Open to individuals and teams (maximum of three members)
- Applicants must have a registered business with a clear sustainability plan
- Must have proficiency in software development and Artificial Intelligence
- Open to researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, graduates, and tech enthusiasts
- Participation is open to all genders
Additionally, participants must be available for physical demonstrations in Lagos, where selected finalists will present their solutions.
Prize Pool
Selected participants will compete for the following rewards:
- 1st Place: ₦5,000,000
- 2nd Place: ₦3,000,000
- 3rd Place: ₦2,000,000
Beyond the financial rewards, winners will benefit from post-hackathon engagement with HelpMum to support the implementation and scaling of their solutions.
Participation Process
The hackathon will be conducted in three key stages:
Step 1: Pitch Application
Applicants are required to submit a detailed idea explaining their proposed solution and how it addresses maternal and infant healthcare challenges.
Step 2: Development Stage
Shortlisted participants will proceed to develop their ideas into workable solutions, receiving mentorship and guidance throughout the process.
Step 3: Grand Finale
Finalists will present their solutions at HelpMum’s Lagos office during the SmartVerge event, where winners will be selected.
Key Guidelines
Participants should note the following important requirements:
- Solutions must be low-cost and require minimal investment for implementation
- MVPs should include integration with HelpMum’s Open Source Innovations
- Participants must demonstrate a clear path to sustainability
- All applicants must agree to the hackathon’s terms and conditions
- Continued collaboration with HelpMum after the hackathon is expected, especially for winning teams
Winning Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated based on:
- Strength of the proof of concept
- Presence and quality of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
- Integration with HelpMum’s open-source solutions
- Cost-effectiveness and scalability
- Originality, creativity, and problem-solving approach
- Clean, functional, and practical user interface (no unnecessary complexity)
