Kaduna State Government has launched its first Gender Policy in Agriculture (2026–2030) aimed at reducing barriers that prevent women from fully participating in the agricultural sector.

The policy seeks to improve women’s access to land, finance, technology, training, and markets so they can contribute more effectively to agricultural productivity and food security across the state.

The framework was unveiled by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Murtala Dabo, during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration held in Kaduna.

According to the commissioner, the policy addresses long-standing inequalities that have limited the ability of women to fully participate in the agricultural value chain.

“Although women constitute a significant share of the agricultural workforce, they still face serious barriers, including restricted land ownership, limited access to credit, and weak extension services,” Mr Dabo said.

He explained that removing these obstacles is necessary to strengthen food production and promote inclusive economic growth within Kaduna’s agricultural sector.

Mr Dabo also noted that the initiative aligns with the development agenda of Governor Uba Sani, which prioritises women’s economic empowerment and inclusive growth.

“The policy will support women farmers and agribusiness operators by improving access to productive resources, expanding market opportunities, and strengthening capacity development,” he stated.

The Gender Policy in Agriculture was developed with support from development partners, including the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and Synergos.

Country Director of Synergos, Victor Adejoh, said the framework provides practical steps to ensure women, youths, and persons with disabilities are actively engaged across the agricultural value chain.

“This policy outlines clear actions for participation in production, processing, storage, and marketing,” Adejoh said.

He added that the framework will strengthen gender-disaggregated data collection to support evidence-based agricultural planning and decision-making in Kaduna State.
