The Kano State Government has disbursed ₦334 million to 6,680 women across the state under its women empowerment programme, as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf moves to widen social support for low-income households and small business owners.
The disbursement, which gives each beneficiary ₦50,000, is part of the state government’s effort to reduce poverty, support women-led businesses and improve household income across Kano’s 44 local government areas.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the programme is designed to help women become financially independent and play stronger roles in supporting their families and local economies.
According to him, the number of women benefiting from the scheme has now increased from 5,200 to 6,680, showing what he described as his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and wider economic participation.
“This initiative is beyond ordinary financial support. It is part of our broader plan to uplift living standards, reduce hardship and ensure more women have the means to build stable livelihoods,” the governor said.
The event was attended by Kano APC Chairman, Hon. Umar Haruna Doguwa, alongside top government officials and community leaders, signalling broad political backing for the programme.
Governor Yusuf said women remain central to economic and social stability, noting that empowering them has direct effects on poverty reduction, family welfare and grassroots development.
He added that the programme aligns with the economic inclusion goals under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on sustainable economic growth and social development.
The governor also revealed that Kano had earlier disbursed over ₦800 million under its youth empowerment scheme, benefiting more than 5,300 youths across the state.
Other interventions by the administration include support for widows, vulnerable residents and beneficiaries of mass wedding schemes, many of whom have also received start-up capital to begin small-scale businesses.
Yusuf further announced plans to distribute tricycles to youths as part of efforts to create more income opportunities and reduce unemployment.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, praised the governor for sustaining the programme, saying it has continued to improve the welfare of women and vulnerable groups.
She urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, especially in expanding small businesses that can generate steady income and strengthen household resilience.
