The Kano State Government has launched a Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy aimed at supporting women and vulnerable groups across the state, with authorities highlighting ongoing financial support for thousands of beneficiaries and new investments in skills development.

The policy was unveiled at an official ceremony attended by government officials, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations (CSOs), and women representatives from across Kano State.

Speaking at the event, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Rural Development, Abdulkadir Abdussalam, said the initiative demonstrates the administration’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities for women.

He disclosed that about 5,200 women across the state’s 484 wards in 44 local government areas are already receiving a monthly stipend of ₦50,000 as part of the government’s strategy to strengthen women’s economic participation.

According to the governor, the policy aligns with the administration’s broader development agenda centred on inclusive governance and equal access to opportunities.

“This policy represents a defining moment in Kano’s journey toward building a more inclusive, just and prosperous society,” Yusuf said.

He added that the government is determined to ensure that women and vulnerable groups are given the tools and support required to contribute meaningfully to economic growth.

“As part of our commitment to people-centred governance anchored on dignity, justice and equal opportunities, we are implementing programmes that directly improve the livelihoods of women across our communities,” he stated.

Governor Yusuf also revealed that the Gyadi-Gyadi Women Skill Acquisition Centre is currently undergoing renovation to transform it into a major hub for skills development and entrepreneurship training for women and adolescent girls.

The upgraded facility, according to the state government, will provide practical training and business development opportunities designed to help women become financially independent.

In addition to economic initiatives, the governor announced steps to strengthen support for persons living with disabilities in the state.

He revealed that a dedicated department for persons with disabilities has been established, while plans are underway to create a commission that will safeguard their rights and opportunities.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Amina Sani, described the policy launch as a significant milestone for women and vulnerable populations in Kano.

“This is a historic moment for women in Kano State,” she said.

Sani commended the state government for backing its commitments with financial investments targeted at improving the welfare of women, children and other vulnerable groups.

The initiative also received support from development partners including the Development Research and Projects Centre (DRPC), the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF), and the Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative.
