Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has revived three more state-owned entrepreneurship institutes that were abandoned for eight years, admitting 1,000 new beneficiaries in a fresh move to empower youth and women across the state.

The revived centres include the Poultry Institute, the Development Journalism Institute, and the Artisan Fisheries Institute, all part of the 26 entrepreneurship centres created to promote skills acquisition, job creation, and economic growth. This development comes as the state continues to prioritise poverty reduction, youth empowerment, and sustainable economic development.

Dr Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, Special Adviser to the Governor on Human Resources and Secretary of the Steering Committee for the 26 Entrepreneurship Institutes, said the revival of these centres shows the governor’s strong commitment to human capital development. He noted that the institutes were reopened to expand opportunities for the teeming youth and women of the state, supporting financial inclusion and long-term economic stability. According to him, “the reopened institutes have trained and empowered 3,570 youth and women,” with more beneficiaries currently undergoing training across different centres.

He explained that the Poultry Institute has enrolled 600 women, who will be trained in bird breeding, feed formulation, and disease control. These skills are expected to boost poultry farming, enhance food security, and increase household income in both rural and urban communities.

The Development Journalism Institute has admitted 200 aspiring journalists and digital media practitioners who will receive training in ethical reporting, media literacy, and digital communication skills to promote responsible journalism and civic engagement.

Similarly, the Artisan Fisheries Institute has taken in 200 small-scale and traditional fishers who will be trained in sustainable fishing methods, aquaculture, and fish processing techniques. Dr Ibrahim stated that these skills will help improve local fish production and reduce reliance on external supply chains, supporting economic diversification and strengthening the local market.

He added that since the committee’s inauguration in mid-2024, a total of 14 institutes have been revived, while others are at different levels of completion. Ongoing training includes 600 women at the Poultry Institute, 200 at the Livestock Institute in Bagauda, 200 at the Fisheries Institute in Bagauda, 200 at the Film Institute, 200 at the Artisan Fisheries Institute in Magaga, Gwarzo Local Government Area, and 200 at the Development Journalism Institute.

Dr Ibrahim also confirmed that 250 beneficiaries have been admitted into the Informatics Institute and another 250 into the Driving Institute, with training scheduled to begin this month. With the latest admissions, the total number of beneficiaries across all revived centres has reached 5,870. He added that the Kano Entrepreneurship Development Institute is preparing to enroll another 250 youth and women for new training cycles expected to start this month.
