Lagos State Government has commenced the rollout of additional smart devices to public secondary school students under its “Hope for Digital Education” initiative, with no fewer than 600,000 students expected to benefit.

The initiative is anchored on the third pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, which prioritises education and technology as key drivers of a 21st-century economy. It also aligns with the national vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s hope agenda.

The programme is being driven by the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, led by the Commissioner, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, alongside the Office of the Permanent Secretary, reflecting a coordinated push to deepen digital learning across public schools.

Officials said the rollout marks a new phase in the state’s gradual integration of technology into classrooms, following earlier interventions that began with the introduction of learning devices in 2020 and expanded with smart devices in 2023.

Under the current phase, thousands of Hope Digital learning tablets are being distributed to students, equipped with curriculum-aligned educational content designed to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

The devices are powered by Liv.ing data-enabled SIMs and supported by the Roducate platform, providing access to lessons, instructional videos, mock examinations, and life skills materials. The government noted that this is complemented by the continued provision of simplified textbooks to ensure balanced learning.

Elias Olawale of the Public Affairs Unit said early outcomes from the initiative have shown measurable impact.

He stated that public secondary school students recorded an 80 per cent pass rate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in 2021, describing it as a significant improvement linked to ongoing reforms.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking on the rollout, said the initiative is designed to go beyond the distribution of devices.

“We are enabling access, opportunity, and a future where every child can learn, grow, and succeed,” he said.

He added that the expansion reinforces the state’s commitment to building a technology-driven education system that meets global standards.
