Governor Seyi Makinde has approved a temporary N10,000 monthly transport allowance for all civil servants in Oyo State, set to run for an initial period of three months, as part of efforts to ease rising living costs.

The governor announced the measure during a stakeholder engagement programme held at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub in Oyo, where he emphasised that the decision was driven by the growing financial pressure on workers, especially due to the steady increase in transportation costs across the state.

According to Makinde, the allowance is designed to directly support civil servants and help them cope with daily commuting expenses without affecting their productivity. “This support is a direct response to the realities our workers are facing. We understand that transportation costs have gone up significantly, and as a government, we must act to ease that burden,” he stated.

He explained that the intervention forms part of the state’s broader economic relief strategy under its SAfER framework, which targets vulnerable groups and aims to stabilise livelihoods amid inflationary trends.

Makinde further noted that maintaining efficient service delivery across ministries, departments and agencies remains a priority, adding that reducing the financial strain on workers would help sustain morale and performance in the public sector.

The announcement coincided with ongoing disbursements under the Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP) and other support schemes, reflecting what the government described as a coordinated approach to economic support.

Stakeholders at the event welcomed the move, describing it as timely. They noted that many workers have struggled with rising transport fares in recent months and that the allowance would provide immediate relief.

The transport support is scheduled to take effect from March, with details on disbursement to be communicated through official government channels.
