June 30, 2025 – The Nasarawa State Government has officially addressed the public concerning irregularities in the recruitment of teachers under the State Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC). In a move aimed at reforming the education system, the government disclosed that only a fraction of the initially recruited teachers met the standards for employment, prompting a renewed and more transparent process.

According to a press release signed by the Executive Chairman of the Teachers’ Service Commission, Amb. Timothy Kasuwa, the state initially approved the recruitment of 1,000 qualified teachers to enhance the quality of education across Nasarawa. However, it was later discovered that the previous management of the TSC recruited 4,243 candidates, far exceeding the approved number.

“Among these, 1,000 individuals were issued appointment letters and placed on the State’s wage bill, even though the legitimacy and qualifications of many had not been verified,” the statement read.

The Government, committed to due process and transparency in public service, engaged an independent body to conduct a thorough screening of all 4,243 candidates. The outcome of this screening revealed that only 781 candidates were genuinely qualified and suitable for the teaching positions.

In response to the screening results and in a show of flexibility, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, approved an increase in the initial recruitment figure. “The Governor graciously approved an upward review of the initial recruitment figure from 1,000 to 1,500 teachers,” the TSC Chairman announced.

This means that with 781 qualified candidates already verified, 719 additional teaching positions are still available and will be filled through a fresh, merit-based recruitment process. The government emphasized that this next phase of recruitment will maintain high standards, encouraging only eligible and qualified individuals across the state to apply once the recruitment portal is reopened.

This development has important implications for education job seekers, especially those searching for teaching jobs in Nasarawa, state government jobs, and education sector employment opportunities.

In a significant move to correct the excesses of the previous TSC administration, the government has decided to formally disengage the 1,000 previously recruited teachers effective from June 30, 2025. However, the State promised to handle the matter with fairness. “All those who have been posted and rendered services in various schools will receive their full entitlements and benefits, while those who were not posted will be adequately compensated in line with extant rules and regulations,” the government assured.

This decision aims to protect the integrity of the state’s education system while maintaining public trust in government recruitment processes. The government reiterated that the future of the children of Nasarawa State is non-negotiable, and any steps taken are in line with a broader vision to reform and strengthen public education.

Amb. Kasuwa stated, “We commend the patience and understanding of all stakeholders, particularly affected candidates, and reaffirm our commitment to building a more efficient and credible public service system.”

The Nasarawa State Government has restated its dedication to upholding merit-based hiring, promoting competence, and ensuring only qualified professionals take up teaching roles. This aligns with broader national goals for sustainable development, youth empowerment, and human capital improvement.
