The Ogun State Government has concluded plans to roll out over 1,000 electric motorcycles as part of activities lined up for the visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the state.
Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed that the rollout forms part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable transportation and reduce dependence on petrol, especially in the wake of rising fuel costs.
The electric bikes are expected to be officially unveiled during the President’s visit, alongside the commissioning of other development projects across the state.
In a video released by the state government on Thursday, youths were seen cheering and chanting, “No fuel, no problem,” in apparent support of the initiative.
Nigeria Startup News reports that the planned rollout is a continuation of the state’s earlier push towards electric mobility. In 2024, the government introduced electric motorcycles and tricycles under its e-mobility programme aimed at providing affordable and environmentally friendly transport alternatives.
The programme was designed to reduce transportation costs, create employment opportunities, and cut carbon emissions within the state.
Officials had also disclosed plans to support the initiative with infrastructure such as battery charging and swap stations, as well as the establishment of a local assembly plant.
The latest deployment is expected to further expand the reach of the initiative, particularly among commercial riders and young people seeking alternative means of livelihood.
President Tinubu’s visit to Ogun State is anticipated to feature the inauguration of several key projects executed by the Abiodun administration, with the electric bike rollout emerging as one of the highlights.
The state government expressed optimism that the initiative would ease transportation challenges while aligning with global trends in clean energy and sustainable urban mobility.
