The Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a ₦2 billion grant for infrastructural development at Edo State University, Iyamho, in Etsako West Local Government Area.

The governor made the announcement on Monday, April 6, 2026, during the commissioning of key projects and the groundbreaking of new facilities within the institution.

The ₦2 billion intervention forms the centrepiece of the administration’s renewed commitment to strengthening tertiary education infrastructure in the state. The funding is expected to accelerate ongoing projects and support new developments aimed at improving learning and research conditions.

In addition to the grant, Okpebholo also approved an increase in the institution’s monthly subvention from ₦100 million to ₦250 million. The adjustment is intended to enhance the university’s operational capacity and ensure sustained academic excellence.

Speaking at the event, the governor described the intervention as a strategic investment in the future of Edo State.

“Today is a great day for Edo State University, Iyamho. Since assuming office, our administration has remained committed to repositioning the education sector in Edo State,” he said.

He noted that the ₦2 billion grant was partly inspired by contributions from stakeholders within the university community, including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetimirin, who donated one month’s salary, and a parent who offered to sponsor architectural designs.

“That you, the Vice-Chancellor, can donate your salary, why will the Edo State Government not support the university projects? On this note, the government will provide ₦2 billion,” Okpebholo stated.

The governor also commissioned the Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library and performed the groundbreaking for the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre as well as the Edo State University Health Centre.

He commended Chief Ehi Aganmonmen for donating computers and furniture to the E-Library, describing the gesture as critical to advancing digital learning.

Okpebholo further lauded Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia for supporting the development of the fitness centre, noting that the facility would promote student wellbeing.

On healthcare, the governor expressed support for the upgrade of the university’s medical facility, stating that the new health centre would replace the existing sick bay and improve access to quality healthcare for students and staff.

He urged both students and management to ensure proper utilisation and maintenance of the facilities, stressing that the investments must be protected.

The governor also called for increased private sector participation in public sector development, noting that government alone cannot meet all infrastructural needs.

The projects, according to him, align with the administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritises education, health and infrastructure.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Musa Ikhilor; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Yakubu Musa; and former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, among other officials.

The ceremony marks another milestone in Edo State’s efforts to position itself as a centre of academic excellence and innovation.
