Chairman of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, ONELGA, Rivers State, Hon. Shedrack Chukwu Ogbogu, has approved a ₦10,000,000.00 empowerment loan for the wives of legionnaires, fulfilling his commitment to the welfare of members of the Nigerian Legion.
Ogbogu disclosed this during his address at the parade ground while commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. The event was attended by the Deputy Chairman, key council officials, legionnaires, and other stakeholders from across the local government area.
According to the Council Chairman, the loan scheme will be coordinated through the Office of the Deputy Chairman and must be disbursed strictly to the rightful beneficiaries without any form of compromise. He warned that any irregularities, diversion, or favoritism in the process would attract the immediate withdrawal of the loan.
He said the annual remembrance of fallen heroes should go beyond ceremonial speeches, stressing that meaningful actions were needed to support both deceased and living legionnaires. According to him, effective fundraising initiatives and economic empowerment programmes were necessary to improve the welfare of their families.
Ogbogu noted that the support would provide hope and encouragement to serving legionnaires and strengthen their collaboration with military and paramilitary agencies in safeguarding the territorial integrity of ONELGA.
He also acknowledged that successive administrations in the council had consistently supported legionnaires over the years.
He said, “As a Council, we have done the little we could and will continue to show love and kindness to them within our lean resources. We remain committed to supporting these veterans who fought to preserve the sovereignty of our nation, and we welcome their partnership in the area of security.
“I call on all security agencies to cooperate with the legionnaires, to ensure peace and unity among residents and businesses in ONELGA, because with peace and unity, our LGA will be stronger and greater.”
In response, a representative of the legionnaires expressed gratitude to the Chairman and his team, offering prayers for peace.
