The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed into law the bill establishing the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA), officially making it a statutory institution. This development strengthens the Academyās role in grooming future leaders for public service in Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by the Executive Secretary of LJLA, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, this legal backing represents a major step in the Academyās journey from vision to reality. She described it as āa historic moment,ā adding that it positions the LJLA as a recognised public sector leadership institution in Lagos State.
āThis is more than the passage of a bill; it is the birth of a legacy,ā she said. āThe Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy is now a legal institution empowered to deliver on its mandate with greater structure and impact. We are even more resolute in our commitment to raising the calibre of leaders our public sector deserves, leaders who reflect the ideals of excellence, integrity, and service.ā
Since its launch in 2022, the LJLA has delivered an intensive fellowship programme for young Nigerians. Participants are embedded in real governance work, placed directly under the supervision of Lagos State Executive Council members, Permanent Secretaries, and Heads of Agencies. The programme helps fellows understand how government operates and how policies are shaped and implemented.
The new law provides stronger foundations for the Academy, enabling it to expand its training, mentorship, and recruitment of young talents into public service. With the growing demand for strong public leadership, the Academy is expected to play a key role in developing leaders who can drive policy reforms, innovation, and ethical governance.
