The Sokoto State Government has thrown its weight behind the launch of Fooda Naija, a new online food ordering platform, describing it as a strategic move to strengthen the state’s digital economy and support local businesses.
Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Innovation and Digital Economy, Hon. Bashar Umar Kwabo, at the launch event, Muhammad Abubakar of the Sokoto State Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (SICTDA) conveyed the government’s strong endorsement of the initiative. The event brought together business leaders, techpreneurs and key stakeholders to explore how digital platforms can unlock new economic opportunities within the state.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner, Abubakar highlighted the broader vision behind supporting innovations like Fooda Naija. He noted that the platform would not only improve how residents access food services but also create income streams for vendors, delivery riders and young entrepreneurs. He described it as “a platform that will transform how people discover, order and enjoy meals, while opening up opportunities for economic growth and digital inclusion.”
The government further stressed that the initiative aligns with its commitment to innovation under the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto. According to the Commissioner, “we are encouraged to see young entrepreneurs leveraging technology to create value for society,” adding that such solutions are critical to building a modern and resilient economy.
Stakeholders at the event also echoed the importance of persistence and innovation in building successful digital platforms. Guest speaker and Founder of Horizon Innovation, Ahmad Jagaba, advised the team behind Fooda Naija to remain focused despite challenges. “Do not give up. Strive for lasting impact and remain steadfast, even when the journey becomes difficult,” he said.
Jagaba also urged the platform to expand its reach beyond traditional restaurants, suggesting that it should accommodate home-based food vendors to widen participation and increase economic benefits.
The Commissioner advised the management to maintain high standards, stressing the need for “quality service, timely delivery and close collaboration with local businesses.” He added that continuous innovation would be essential for staying competitive in the fast-growing digital marketplace.
He also reassured the founders of government support, stating that the state would continue to provide an enabling environment for tech-driven businesses to thrive.
During a panel session led by Murtala Nuhu, business leaders and techpreneurs offered mentorship and practical insights, encouraging young people in Sokoto to embrace digital entrepreneurship.
In his remarks, Fooda Naija founder, Marcel Obinna, expressed appreciation for the support received. He described the Ministry as “a key partner in our initiatives” and said the backing gives the team confidence to scale impact across the state.
