Sokoto State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has issued a strong warning to school principals and teachers following reports of alleged exploitation of students under the AGILE support program.

The Ministry explained that after the official launch of the program by the First Lady of Sokoto State, Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Ahmad Aliyu, funds were disbursed to beneficiaries through ATM cards distributed directly in schools. The initiative was introduced to empower female students and improve access to quality education in the state.

However, disturbing reports have emerged that some principals and teachers unlawfully collected ATM cards from students and allegedly withdrew parts of the funds for personal use. In response, the Ministry described the act as “a serious breach of trust and a clear act of exploitation,” stressing that it “strongly condemns and will not tolerate” such misconduct.

The Ministry emphasized that the ATM cards belong solely to the students and no school authority or staff member has the right to collect or withhold a student’s card under any circumstance. Parents and guardians were urged to ensure their daughters have full possession and control of their cards.

According to the statement, “Any principal, teacher, or staff member found guilty of this act will face immediate administrative action.”

The Ministry also encouraged parents and students to report any cases of exploitation by calling 08036074739. It assured that all credible reports will be followed up to ensure accountability and justice.

“This warning serves as a strong reminder to all school authorities that the AGILE fund is a State intervention meant to empower female students and improve access to education, not an opportunity for exploitation,” the Ministry stated.

It further reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of students’ rights across all schools in Sokoto State.
