August 6, 2025 – President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate rollout of the free healthcare access initiative for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme. He described the plan as an essential part of social protection and a way to ensure dignity for senior citizens after years of service.
The President also directed that long-overdue pension increases and the implementation of a minimum pension guarantee be carried out without delay. According to him, this would create a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the scheme.
These directives followed a briefing from Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission. President Tinubu instructed her to urgently address the long-standing police pension problem, stressing that members of the police force who protect the nation must be able to retire in dignity and peace of mind.
Ms. Oloworaran informed the President of measures being taken to preserve the value of pension fund assets despite inflation and other macroeconomic challenges. She also revealed plans to introduce foreign currency contributions, allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to take part in the pension system.
President Tinubu expressed strong support for the reforms, stating, “My administration remains committed to inclusive growth and the protection of ordinary Nigerians.”
The PenCom DG also updated the President on several transformative pension initiatives aimed at improving retiree welfare and expanding the coverage of the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The meeting at the State House underscored the administration’s focus on enhancing social welfare, protecting retirement savings, and ensuring that pension reforms meet the needs of all retirees.
