The United Nations in Nigeria has dismissed viral claims on social media alleging it is supplying aid to insurgent groups in Northern Nigeria, describing the reports as false and misleading.

In a public notice posted on its official X account on Sunday, the UN said it was aware of the circulating allegations and moved to clarify its position, stressing that the claims “do not reflect the principles and values upheld by the United Nations.”

It stated, “The United Nations in Nigeria is aware of disinformation circulating on social media alleging that the UN is supplying aid to insurgent groups in Northern Nigeria. We wish to categorically state that these claims are false, misleading.”

The organisation urged the public to exercise caution and rely on verified information from credible and official sources, warning that unverified narratives could distort public understanding of its humanitarian operations.

The development comes amid renewed insecurity in the North-East, including recent attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State, which left several persons dead and many others injured. Analysts note that such incidents often trigger a surge in misinformation across social media platforms, particularly on Facebook, WhatsApp and X.

Humanitarian agencies, including the UN, have maintained a significant presence in the region due to the protracted insurgency involving Boko Haram and ISWAP, which has displaced millions and left many communities dependent on aid for survival. Food assistance, nutrition support and emergency relief remain critical in addressing the growing humanitarian crisis.

There is, however, no credible evidence from government authorities or international bodies to support claims that the UN is deliberately supplying aid to insurgent groups. Experts warn that such allegations, if left unchecked, could undermine trust in humanitarian interventions and expose aid workers to increased risks.

Nigeria has also faced a rising wave of misinformation, particularly during periods of heightened insecurity, with false narratives often spreading rapidly through informal digital networks.

The UN added that members of the public seeking clarification should engage its official communication channels, reiterating its commitment to transparency and humanitarian principles in all its operations across the country.
