The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has addressed claims circulating online about the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement made available to the public, the Council described the information as completely false and misleading.
According to WAEC, a press statement dated Saturday, July 19, 2025, has been circulating on social media platforms. It falsely claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had canceled the 2025 WASSCE due to widespread examination malpractice, coordinated leakage of question papers, and unauthorized digital sharing of exam materials.
“The WAEC Management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious Press Statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council. The said examination has not been cancelled,” the Council said.
WAEC added that the source of the misinformation remains unknown but insisted it is a deliberate attempt by some individuals to cause confusion and panic among candidates and the general public.
“As a matter of fact, the marking of scripts of the said examination has just been concluded and results will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025,” WAEC confirmed.
The Council also emphasized that any official information regarding its activities, including examination results and updates, will only be shared through verified social media handles and accredited news platforms.
“All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” it noted.
WAEC has therefore urged parents, candidates, schools, and the public to ignore the false report and await the official release of the 2025 WASSCE results as earlier scheduled.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education confirmed that both WAEC and NECO exams are not cancelled.
In other news, WAEC denied conducting 2025 Exam Diets in July.
