The World Food Programme (WFP), key stakeholders in Yobe State, and coalitions representing persons with disabilities have jointly commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for his administration’s strong commitment to food security. This was during the official flag-off of the distribution of 50,000 bags of grains to vulnerable households across the state.

The event, held today at the August 27 Stadium in Damaturu, drew a large crowd and marked a major step in Yobe State’s efforts to fight hunger and support families facing economic hardship.

Governor Buni, who personally launched the distribution, said his government is focused on providing practical support to the most vulnerable groups, including those in remote areas and persons living with disabilities.

“These 50,000 bags of grains symbolize our promise to stand by our people,” Governor Buni said. “Our strategy is clear: transparent, efficient, and inclusive distribution. We are working closely with community leaders and groups to ensure that this aid gets directly to those who need it most.”

A representative of the World Food Programme praised the initiative, describing it as a model for the region. The WFP official assured that the organization would continue to support the Yobe State Government in its food security programs.

“The proactive approach of the Yobe State Government, under Governor Buni’s leadership, is commendable. Flagging off this distribution for 2025 so early demonstrates strong planning and a genuine commitment to leaving no one behind,” the official said. “This aligns perfectly with our shared goals of building resilience and ensuring equitable access to food.”

Disability rights groups also gave their full support to the initiative. A representative of the groups expressed gratitude for the inclusion of their members as direct beneficiaries of the food distribution.

“We are here not just as spectators, but as recognized partners. Governor Buni has ensured that the specific needs of persons with disabilities are considered in this distribution. This gesture goes beyond food; it is a message of dignity and inclusion that will alleviate the suffering of thousands of our families,” the representative stated.

The event was attended by traditional rulers, local government chairmen, civil society organizations, and beneficiaries, all of whom applauded the government’s commitment to tackling hunger and promoting inclusive development.
