The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has entered into a partnership with the International Fertilizer Development Center to boost fertilizer availability, accessibility, and affordability in Nigeria. The collaboration is also expected to enhance soil health and strengthen food security.
Speaking on the development, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, said there is a need to strengthen input markets, expand last-mile delivery systems, and scale climate-smart soil fertility practices to support smallholder farmers.
He pointed out that the Nigeria Farmers Soil Health Scheme provides tailored fertilizer recommendations for specific crops and locations, helping farmers get the right inputs for better yields.
According to the ministry, the partnership will provide technical assistance, support local blending capacity, and curb adulteration in the input supply chain. It will also ensure that quality fertilizer and other inputs reach farmers on time while advancing the country’s food security goals.
A Technical Committee will be set up to work on the details of the collaboration. The committee will focus on strengthening private-sector distribution networks, promoting balanced nutrient use, and supporting evidence-based policies that will make Nigeria’s input markets more competitive and sustainable.
