The Abia State Government has announced the release of the oral interview results for the second batch of its ongoing teachers’ recruitment exercise, marking another step in its education sector reform agenda as the state simultaneously rolls out an accelerated basic education programme aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school persons.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia following this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Teachers’ recruitment enters notification stage

According to Kanu, the newly released results cover candidates who participated in the oral interview stage after successfully passing the Computer-Based Test (CBT) phase of the recruitment process.

He stated that all successful applicants in the second batch would be formally notified by the government in due course.

The recruitment exercise is part of the Abia government’s broader plan to strengthen manpower in public schools and improve teacher quality across the state’s education system.

The state had earlier commenced phased recruitment to fill teaching gaps in primary and secondary schools, a move seen as critical to restoring confidence in public education and addressing shortages in qualified classroom personnel.

Accelerated education programme targets out-of-school population

In a related development, the state government has launched an accelerated basic education programme designed to compress the standard six-year primary school curriculum into three years.

The initiative is targeted at children, youths and adults who were unable to complete their formal basic education within the conventional timeframe.

Kanu explained that the programme is being piloted by the Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, and is intended to provide a second chance pathway for residents who lack foundational education qualifications.

He urged eligible residents across the state to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain their First School Leaving Certificate, describing the scheme as a practical intervention to reduce educational exclusion.

The programme is expected to contribute significantly to efforts aimed at lowering Abia’s out-of-school statistics while expanding literacy access among underserved populations.

Health reforms attract World Bank grant support

Beyond education, the Commissioner disclosed that Abia has been selected as one of the beneficiary states for a $250 million World Bank Health Security Grant scheduled for 2026.

He attributed the selection to reforms being implemented in the state’s healthcare system, particularly improvements in public health preparedness and service delivery.

Kanu noted that the state has also domesticated the Rural Emergency Services and Maternal Transport Programme under the Maternal Mortality Initiative (MAMI) in three high-risk local government areas: Bende, Obingwa and Ukwa East.

These councils were prioritised due to their elevated maternal mortality burden, with the intervention expected to improve emergency maternal healthcare response and reduce preventable deaths.

No major disease outbreaks recorded

The government further stated that Abia has not recorded outbreaks of major public health diseases such as Lassa fever, Mpox, diphtheria, yellow fever, cholera and rabies during the review period.

This, according to officials, reflects improved disease surveillance and emergency response coordination across the state.

ANPA medical mission to deliver 1,500 consultations

Kanu also announced the commencement of the 2026 free medical mission organised by the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) in collaboration with the Abia State Government and Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas.

The outreach is expected to provide about 1,500 medical consultations and 100 specialised surgeries for residents.

While consultations and surgeries will be conducted at Aba General Hospital, eye care services will be offered at Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia. Sexual and reproductive health services will also be available at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba.

The combined announcements underscore the state government’s current focus on expanding access in both education and healthcare as part of its wider social development agenda.
