Abia State is set to launch a groundbreaking initiative to strengthen local businesses and boost international trade. On Monday, July 8, 2025, Governor Alex Otti, OFR, will officially commission the Aba Export Lab, a key step under the Growth Exports Pillar of his Economic Rejuvenation Agenda.
This initiative is designed to reposition Abia as an export-driven economy, with a focus on turning Aba into a global center for innovation and production. The Export Lab will act as a platform where local businesses can access international markets, improve product quality, and gain the skills needed to succeed globally.
In its pilot phase, 20 carefully selected Aba-based businesses will take part in a six-month training and support programme. Participants will receive export readiness training, guidance on market strategy, logistics and compliance support, lead generation, and performance evaluations. All these services are aimed at helping local businesses become competitive in the global marketplace.
The Aba Export Lab is being established in partnership with development agencies such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). These partnerships are expected to bring significant value, especially in areas like product packaging, pricing, production management, and achieving international certifications—all crucial for successful exports.
According to the state government, the selection of participating businesses will be based on specific criteria including location in Aba, a high level of export readiness, experienced leadership, and the presence of a dedicated export team.
The programme will focus on key product categories that offer both cultural significance and global demand. These include Akwete fabric—known for its rich cultural identity and international commercial protection—industrial footwear designed for oil, gas, and construction markets, and apparel tailored to meet the fashion tastes of the African diaspora while adhering to international quality standards.
“Our vision is to restore Aba’s reputation as the ‘Japan of Africa,’” said the Commissioner for Industry and SMEs, Mazi Mike Akpara. “We want our people to be proud to put ‘Made in Aba’ on their products.”
