The management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has suspended the implementation of revised student charges following concerns raised by students and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

The university announced the decision in a Special Bulletin issued on Thursday, October 8, 2026, saying the suspension would allow further consultations with students and other relevant stakeholders.

The review of the charges followed an extensive, year-long consultation involving stakeholders, particularly the student body. According to the university, the review became necessary because of the widening gap between available resources and the rising cost of providing essential services to students.

ABU said the financial pressure facing the institution had been compounded by the loss of nearly N2.5bn following a court ruling in May 2026. The development, according to the management, placed considerable additional pressure on the university’s finances and constrained its capacity to sustain and improve essential services.

The revised charges were introduced to provide additional resources for the continued provision and improvement of critical services and facilities. These include services directly connected to students’ academic experience, welfare, security, transportation, utilities and general campus life.

However, as implementation approached, the student body presented additional observations, concerns and requests arising from further consideration of the revised charges.

Following the submissions, ABU management invited the leadership of the SRC to discuss the issues and understand the nature of the students’ complaints.

The university said it carefully considered the submissions made during the meeting and found them legitimate, responsible and deserving of consideration.

Consequently, management decided to suspend implementation of the revised charges to allow wider consultations and further input from the student body and other relevant stakeholders.

The university described the decision as part of its commitment to listening to students and ensuring that decisions with significant implications for them receive the fullest possible consideration.

ABU management also commended the students for approaching the matter in what it described as a mature, responsible and constructive manner.

According to the university, the engagement demonstrates that difficult institutional challenges can be addressed through dialogue, mutual understanding and shared responsibility. Management said it remained committed to finding a sustainable balance between the legitimate concerns of students and the resources required to provide a conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and personal development.

The university, however, said it remained mindful of the financial realities confronting the institution and the urgent need to strengthen resources available for essential services.

Management reiterated its commitment to student welfare and said efforts would continue to ensure that the university’s limited resources are deployed responsibly, transparently and in ways that produce the greatest possible benefit to the student community.

It appealed to students for continued patience, understanding and cooperation while consultations continue. The management also encouraged students to continue their academic activities and expressed confidence in the ability of the SRC and university management to resolve the issues.

ABU said communication on the outcome of the consultations and the next steps would be issued in due course.
