The Federal Government has opened applications for the Nigeria Public Procurement Certification Programme (NPPCP), a free digital training platform designed to help local businesses understand and compete for government contracts.
The programme, developed in partnership with the World Bank, is targeted at about 39.6 million nano, micro, small and medium enterprises (NMSMEs). It seeks to address barriers that have kept many entrepreneurs from accessing public procurement opportunities, including cumbersome procedures, limited information and extensive documentation requirements.
The training is part of the World Bank-backed Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) project, which aims to strengthen procurement capacity and promote sustainable practices across Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
The NPPCP provides procurement training and certification intended to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills. Working with global procurement partners and six Centres of Excellence established under SPESSE, the programme offers courses based on international standards and best practices adapted to Nigeria. The programme further aims to strengthen procurement professionalism and help businesses understand the processes, standards and responsibilities involved before pursuing public sector opportunities in Nigeria.
The platform also serves as a professional procurement registry and provides an inclusive certification pathway. Users can assess which certifications they qualify for and review the prerequisites for each level.
The training is accessible through smartphones, tablets and computers. Participants can learn how to identify procurement opportunities, prepare competitive bids, understand contract obligations and meet government performance benchmarks.
Its learning resources include interactive modules, quizzes and worked examples. Participants who complete the training can receive certificates.
The initiative is intended to help businesses better navigate public procurement and connect with government contracting opportunities. However, completing the training does not guarantee that a participant or business will receive a contract. Contract awards will continue to follow established competitive procurement procedures.
