Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has introduced a new prize for News Editor of the Year at the Bayelsa Media Awards, expanding his support to four categories. The awards now cover Newscaster, Presenter, Reporter, and News Editor of the Year.

Each winner will receive ₦500,000 and a tablet. Governor Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, explained that the initiative reflects the government’s recognition of the media’s role in promoting policies and fostering public awareness. He said, “The governor believes strongly in the importance of the media and its place in strengthening democracy.”

Bayelsa Media Awards Project Manager Victor Binawari also commended the governor’s gesture. He noted that such recognition would encourage professionalism in journalism. According to him, “This support is coming at a time when the state is pushing new development strides, including the acquisition of a 60-megawatt gas turbine to drive industrialisation and economic growth.”
