The Cross River State Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Development has commenced distribution of SAMPEA 20-T PBR cowpea seeds to interested farmers.

The seeds, developed by the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), became available from Monday, September 21, 2026, as part of efforts to improve cowpea production and support farmers.
SAMPEA 20-T is an improved cowpea variety developed through agricultural research. It has high genetic purity and resistance to the pod-borer pest, Maruca vitrata. The variety is known for early maturity, improved yield performance and reduced dependence on insecticide applications compared with conventional varieties.
According to the state government, the intervention is aimed at increasing cowpea production, strengthening food security and improving access to nutritious food, for women and children.
The programme is expected to support farmers’ productivity and livelihoods.
Distribution is being carried out in collaboration with the state chapters of the Cowpea Farmers Association and Women in Agriculture (WIA).
Interested farmers are required to proceed to their Local Government Councils for documentation and collection of the seeds.
Farmers have been advised to follow collection arrangements. The seeds are strictly for planting purposes and are not intended for human consumption only.
