The Kebbi State Government has begun preparations to implement the Federal Government’s ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for workers, following the planned November commencement of the intervention.

Governor Nasir Idris disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview with journalists in Abuja. Asked whether Kebbi would adopt the allowance approved for Federal Government workers, he said a committee had already been established to work out the implementation arrangements.

The committee, which is operating under the Head of Service, is expected to determine how the intervention will be introduced for state workers. However, the governor did not announce a specific date for the first payment in Kebbi.

The Federal Government’s transport allowance was agreed as a temporary intervention to cushion the effects of rising living costs and transport fares following the removal of the petrol subsidy. The November commencement applies to the federal arrangement; Kebbi’s payment timetable remains subject to the state’s implementation process.

Idris also expressed concern about the declining purchasing power of workers’ salaries amid prevailing economic hardship. He said another committee was working on a possible adjustment, while reiterating his commitment to responding to workers’ needs and maintaining industrial harmony.

The governor said Kebbi would act when the Federal Government introduced measures to improve workers’ welfare, pointing to his background as a former labour leader.

What workers should know

Kebbi workers should await an official announcement from the state government on eligibility, payment arrangements, commencement date and payment schedule for beneficiaries. Although preparations are underway, the state has not yet confirmed when its ₦70,000 transport allowance payments will begin.
