The Federal Government, through the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), is working with state officials to register poor and vulnerable households for consideration under government support programmes.
In Bayelsa State, the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), under the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, is conducting registration and updating records on the National Social Register (NSR).
The exercise is ongoing in Biogbolo-Epie, Yenezuegene-Epie and Akenfa communities in Yenagoa Local Government Area (LGA). It aims to identify new households and update details of those already captured for possible consideration under the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) and other government interventions.
The NSR is a database used to identify poor and vulnerable households that may qualify for social protection programmes. However, registration does not automatically guarantee cash transfers or other benefits.
Officials are encouraging households that have not registered to come forward, while previously registered households are advised to update their information using their National Identification Number (NIN).
The registration exercise is free. Residents have been warned not to pay anyone to be enlisted or update their details.
Separately, reports indicate that officials have also visited Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area for account-opening activities targeting indigent residents and women petty traders. This is a separate activity and should not be confused with the Bayelsa registration exercise.
How to register
Residents should contact authorised SOCU officials in their respective communities conducting the exercise to register or update their household records. For enquiries and assistance, call 07039375751 or the toll-free number 969. Do not pay anyone for registration. Confirm eligibility and any required documents directly with officials, as inclusion in the NSR does not guarantee payment under any particular programme.
