The Federal Government is set to launch the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI) in Abuja, marking a major step in strengthening media literacy infrastructure in Nigeria and across Africa.

The initiative is being led by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation (FMINO) in collaboration with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), and UNESCO.

According to the organisers, the institute is positioned as the first UNESCO Category 2 Institute dedicated to Media and Information Literacy (MIL), with a mandate to drive research, capacity building, and policy development across national, regional, and global levels.

“The unveiling of this first UNESCO Category 2 Institute on Media Information Literacy marks a significant step in advancing media and information literacy at national, regional, and global levels,” the organisers stated.

The official launch, tagged #IMILILaunchABJ, will take place over two days in Abuja.

The first day of the event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 12:00 noon, and will be held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

The second day will follow on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., taking place at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Jabi, Abuja.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to attend as Special Guest of Honour and official launcher, alongside key stakeholders including the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Director-General of UNESCO, Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz.

The establishment of IMILI comes at a time when concerns around misinformation, digital literacy, and responsible media use continue to grow, with stakeholders increasingly calling for structured institutional responses.

Organisers noted that the institute will serve as a hub for advancing media literacy competencies, supporting informed citizenship, and strengthening democratic engagement through improved access to credible information.

Attendance at the launch event is open to invited stakeholders, with organisers stating that participation “will be highly appreciated.”
