The Federal Government has unveiled a new automotive training manual designed to prepare Nigerian technicians and automotive professionals for the growing adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles and Electric Vehicles (EVs) across the country.

The manual was presented to the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) during a visit by members of the Sector Skills Council to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on May 15, 2026.

According to NADDC, the manual was developed through a joint effort between the council and the Automotive Sector Skills Council to support technical training, standardisation, and workforce development in Nigeria’s automotive industry.

Speaking during the presentation, President of the Automotive Sector Skills Council, Engineer Best Nnodim, said the manual was created for automotive professionals, training institutions, regulatory agencies, and awarding bodies to ensure proper industry application and standards development.

He explained that the document contains detailed guidelines on CNG systems and EV technologies, including operations, safety procedures, conversion methods, maintenance practices, and technical training requirements.

The CNG section of the manual contains nine modules focused on gas-powered vehicle systems, installation procedures, safety measures, and maintenance practices. The Electric Vehicle section contains ten modules designed to guide technicians and workshop operators on EV servicing, diagnostics, maintenance, and electrical systems management.

According to the council, the manual combines engineering knowledge, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and practical field experience needed to support the changing automotive sector.

The EV section was also specifically developed for technicians transitioning from conventional vehicle servicing into electric mobility services, where advanced electrical and diagnostic expertise are increasingly required.

Nigeria has continued to push for cleaner transportation alternatives in recent years, particularly through the expansion of CNG adoption and increasing discussions around electric mobility. Industry stakeholders believe the shortage of trained technicians remains one of the major challenges facing the transition.

Commenting on the development, Director-General of NADDC, Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, commended the Sector Skills Council for its collaboration and commitment to capacity development in the automotive sector.

Osanipin said structured training and certification would play an important role in strengthening Nigeria’s automotive workforce and supporting the country’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable mobility solutions.

“This initiative is important for the future of Nigeria’s automotive industry. Building technical capacity and standardising training will help prepare local professionals for emerging vehicle technologies,” he said.

The new manual is expected to support training centres, workshops, institutions, and automotive service providers as Nigeria continues to expand investments in CNG infrastructure and electric vehicle adoption.
