Growing frustration is building among beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme after a meeting between government officials and training centre managements ended without concrete discussions on outstanding trainee stipends and starter kits.

The meeting, which held on Friday, was expected by many trainees to provide clarity on delayed stipend payments and the distribution of starter kits promised under the programme. However, participants and observers familiar with the discussions indicated that no major decision was reached on either issue, Nigeria Startup News reports.

According to information shared after the meeting, discussions covered general programme matters, including outstanding stipend payments, starter kits and other updates relating to the TVET scheme. However, beneficiaries who had hoped for immediate resolutions were left disappointed after learning that no significant progress was made on the key concerns affecting trainees.

Several beneficiaries had expected the Federal Government to fulfil an earlier assurance that all outstanding stipends would be settled before the end of the month. With the month nearing its end and payments still pending for many participants, concerns have continued to grow across trainee communities and social media platforms.

Comments from beneficiaries following the meeting reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the pace of implementation. While some urged patience, many questioned why a meeting involving programme stakeholders could be held without concrete discussions on stipend payments and starter kit distribution.

One beneficiary described the training itself as valuable despite the payment delays.

“As for me, God bless the organisers of TVET and my training centre for giving us valuable training that is worth more than the six months stipend put together. I also had an amazing internship with a world-class broadcast organisation,” the trainee said.

However, many others expressed disappointment over the lack of updates on financial support and programme benefits.

“Nothing serious was discussed,” one beneficiary wrote, while another described the outcome of the meeting as “very unfortunate.”

Others questioned why discussions on stipends and starter kits were not prioritised, especially given the expectations that had built up among graduating participants over the past few weeks.

Attention is now shifting to next week, when stakeholders are expected to hold further discussions on issues affecting the programme. There have been growing speculations that more detailed conversations regarding TVET starter kits, trainee support packages and other programme benefits could take place in June.

The timing is significant because June is also the month when Cohort 2, popularly referred to as Batch B beneficiaries, are expected to commence training under the scheme.

Many existing trainees believe decisions on outstanding payments and starter kits need to be resolved before the next batch begins training. They argue that addressing pending obligations would help restore confidence in the programme and reassure new participants entering the system.

Despite the criticism, some beneficiaries have continued to encourage fellow trainees not to lose focus on the skills acquisition component of the programme, noting that vocational training and industry exposure remain important long-term benefits.

For now, however, the main concern for many participants remains the delayed stipends and uncertainty surrounding starter kit distribution.

Nigeria Startup News reports that with another round of discussions expected next week, beneficiaries will be hoping that the Federal Government provides clearer answers on when outstanding stipend payments will be made and how starter kits will be distributed to eligible trainees.
