The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Anambra State.

This was disclosed in a press release issued after its regular weekly meeting held on Thursday, 17th July 2025.

According to the statement, the extension follows a review of ongoing preparations for the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in the state, alongside an update on new political party registration requests.

“The Commission is pleased with the turnout of registrants in Anambra State and the peaceful conduct of the CVR in all the 326 registration centres in the State,” the statement said.

INEC revealed that, as of Wednesday, 16th July 2025, a total of 96,085 new voters had successfully completed registration in just nine days, averaging over 10,600 new registrations daily.

12,595 voters applied to transfer their registration either within or outside Anambra State. Another 7,061 applicants requested updates to their voter records or replacements for lost or damaged Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

Though the CVR was initially scheduled to end today, INEC has responded to public appeals and granted a three-day extension. The registration exercise will now conclude on Sunday, 20th July 2025.

INEC further noted that once the registration is concluded, the voters register will be displayed to allow for claims and objections, in accordance with electoral laws.

The data will also undergo a cleanup process using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). The Commission will then release a detailed report on the demographics of new registrants, including breakdowns by age, gender, occupation, and disability status.

At this early stage, the Commission revealed that 56,017 (58%) of the new registrants are female, and 50,429 (52.48%) are young people aged 18 to 34. This aligns with the growing involvement of youth and women in Nigeria’s democratic process, contributing to civic responsibility and voter participation.

Meanwhile, INEC also reported that it has received five additional letters of intent from groups seeking to be registered as political parties. This brings the total number of applications received so far to 134.

The proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership details of these new associations have been published on the Commission’s website and other public platforms.

“The Commission will continue to keep the citizens up to date on all its activities,” the release concluded.
