NCDMB Hosts 9th National Undergraduate Essay Competition Award Ceremony

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board hosted the Award and Prize Presentation Ceremony for the 9th Edition of the NCDMB Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition earlier today at the Nigerian Content Tower in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The event focused on the theme Sustaining Local Content Policies in the Transitioning Oil and Gas Industry, attracting students, stakeholders and Board staff members. The programme highlighted youth development, capacity building and economic growth, which remain key topics in high value sectors such as energy policy, local content development and community engagement.

In his welcome address, the Chief Executive of Mahogany 21st Century Concepts Limited and Programme Consultant, Mr. Eyinimi Omorozi, said the competition was created to deepen critical thinking and help undergraduates build the skills needed to participate in the oil and gas industry. He explained that the initiative encourages writing, research and innovation among young Nigerians. According to him, the Board has continued to maintain an impactful programme that supports national development.

The Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by Mr. Teddy Bai, described the annual competition as a strong tool for capacity building. He stated that the programme helps promote Local Content awareness while improving analytical abilities across universities. He also highlighted progress on the 10-Year Strategic Roadmap and noted that the Back to the Creeks Initiative has strengthened community development and stakeholder relations. He commended the academic panel and praised the transparent selection process, adding that every participant contributed meaningfully to the discussion on Nigeria’s energy transition.

The top three winners were announced during the ceremony. First place went to Akande Oyinkansola Josephine, a 16-year-old 200-level Medical student from Obafemi Awolowo University, who received ₦1,000,000 and a laptop. Second place was awarded to Sonuga Sultan Opeyemi, a 23-year-old 200-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, who received ₦700,000 and a laptop. Third place went to Precious Aguigwe Amarachi, a 19-year-old 200-level Computer Science student from the University of Uyo, who received ₦500,000 and a laptop. All top ten finalists also received laptops and a copy of Nigeria’s Local Content: A Journey of Strategic Communication and Economic Transformation written by Dr. Obinna Ezeobi.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr. Obinna Ezeobi, represented by Mr. Teleola Oyeleke, congratulated the winners and appreciated the guests for supporting the programme.
