Bauchi Reviews AGILE Life Skills Programme

The Bauchi State Ministry of Education has commenced a performance review of the life skills component of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project to improve implementation quality and programme outcomes statewide.

The review was the focus of a quarterly community engagement meeting in Bauchi, bringing together education managers, school principals, School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members, community leaders, and development partners to assess progress and challenges.

Speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ali Babayo, said the engagement was designed as a feedback mechanism for identifying gaps, refining strategies, and aligning Bauchi State’s delivery of the AGILE life skills programme with national benchmarks.

Babayo explained that insights from stakeholders would guide policy adjustments and strengthen implementation across participating secondary schools, ensuring that adolescent girls benefit fully from the initiative.

Also addressing participants, the Executive Director of SISWACHI, Maryam Mohammed, disclosed that the programme is constrained by a shortage of trained Guidance and Counsellors (G&Cs) and community mentors in secondary schools statewide.

She noted that while the initial plan was to train 200 Guidance and Counsellors and 100 community mentors, the programme presently has 123 G&Cs and 100 mentors, leaving a shortfall of about 72 personnel.

Mohammed said the engagement with school principals and community leaders was aimed at identifying solutions to close the manpower gap and meet the target of deploying 300 facilitators across 100 secondary schools.

Despite the challenge, she described the AGILE life skills component, supported by the World Bank, as an opportunity for empowering adolescent girls, urging communities to take ownership and sustain gains beyond the project lifespan.

Participants agreed that consistent reviews and community involvement would improve girls’ enrolment, retention, and completion rates, while driving social change within host communities.

inDrive Disburses N75m Relief to Lagos Residents Through GenerousMe

inDrive, a ride-hailing platform operating in Nigeria, has provided more than N75 million in humanitarian assistance to residents of Lagos displaced by recent urban demolitions, highlighting the increasing role of private companies in social response efforts.

The relief programme was implemented in partnership with the Tolu Aniwura Welfare Foundation, also known as GenerousMe, and was delivered at St Paul Catholic Church in Ebute-Metta. According to organisers, the exercise reached more than 2,000 affected individuals and households across different parts of the city.

Beneficiaries received food supplies, clothing, bedding, baby care items and educational materials for school-age children. The relief packages included staple food items such as rice, beans, garri and cooking oil, alongside household essentials including blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets and rechargeable lamps.

Children from displaced families were also supported with school packs containing bags, exercise books and writing materials, as part of efforts to reduce the impact of the demolitions on their education and daily routines.

According to inDrive, the intervention was designed to support families forced from their homes while reinforcing the company’s broader social impact strategy in Nigeria, where it has expanded beyond mobility services into community-focused initiatives.

Timothy Oladimeji, inDrive’s country representative in Nigeria, said the initiative reflected the company’s emphasis on a people-first operating model, particularly in markets facing economic and social pressures.

“The recent demolitions left many families in vulnerable conditions. Through our partnership with GenerousMe, we were able to respond quickly while maintaining our focus on long-term community empowerment,” Oladimeji said.

Adetola Alade, partnerships lead at GenerousMe, said collaboration with private-sector partners was critical to effective humanitarian response. “Working with inDrive enabled the timely and coordinated delivery of aid to those most in need,” he said.

As competition increases in Nigeria’s ride-hailing market, companies are linking social investment with broader business strategies.

PSC, NPF extend police constable recruitment deadline

The Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have extended the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 police constables by two weeks following what officials described as “significant disparities” in applications across states.

The decision comes after the recruitment portal, which opened on 15 December 2025, received over 400,000 applications nationwide.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the PSC, Mr. Torty Njoku Kalu, announced that the application deadline has been moved to 8 February 2026.

Kalu explained that while northern and North-Central states such as Adamawa, Benue and Kaduna recorded high numbers of applicants, several major southern states showed low participation.

States mentioned include Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Anambra, a situation that has drawn attention considering their population sizes and ongoing security concerns.

According to him, the extension is meant to encourage “equitable representation” in the Nigeria Police Force and ensure balanced participation from all parts of the country.

Following the development, the PSC and NPF have shifted responsibility to state governments, local government councils, traditional rulers, religious bodies and socio-cultural organisations.

These groups have been urged to mobilise and sensitise eligible youths within their areas to apply before the new deadline through the official portal, https://npfapplication.psc.gov.ng.

Despite concerns, the PSC and NPF reaffirmed a “fair and transparent” process nationwide.

N-Power beneficiaries notify FG of protest over unpaid stipends

0

N-Power beneficiaries under the National Association of N-Power Beneficiaries have submitted a formal letter to the federal government, notifying authorities of an upcoming nationwide protest over unpaid stipends.

The letter, dated 4 February 2026, was addressed to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Abuja and referenced NANB/01/VOL I.

In the letter titled Letter of Protest by the National Association of N-Power Beneficiaries Over Non-Payment of Outstanding Stipends (2024/2025), the association said beneficiaries across the federation are owed stipends for periods ranging from eight to twelve months.

“We write on behalf of the National Association of N-Power Beneficiaries across the Federation to formally protest the continued non-payment of outstanding stipends owed to beneficiaries for a period ranging from eight (8) to twelve (12) months,” the letter stated.

The association noted that despite several verification exercises, public assurances and commitments by relevant authorities, beneficiaries have not received their payments.

“Despite repeated assurances, verification exercises, and public commitments by relevant authorities, beneficiaries are yet to receive their legitimate entitlements,” the letter said.

It added that the lack of clear communication, transparency and a definite payment timeline has weakened trust in the programme and government institutions.

According to the document, the planned protest is scheduled to hold simultaneously in all 36 state capitals, including Abuja.

The letter was signed by Bashir Ladan, National General Secretary of the association, on behalf of the National Chairman, Comr. Abdurrahman L. Maitada.

Other national officers listed on the document include Adeshina A. Adex, National Publicity Secretary; Mr. Jacob Kehinde James, National Admin; and Bashir Ladan, National General Secretary.

The association said the letter was circulated nationwide and copied to security, financial and oversight institutions, as well as the media, for awareness and intervention.

“We trust that your esteemed office will treat this matter with the urgency it deserves to prevent further suffering and possible escalation of grievances by affected beneficiaries,” the letter stated.

Official stamps on the document show the letter was received by the National Assembly, Federal Labour Congress, and Department of State Services in January 2026 nationwide offices.

Wakama-Ama Youths Call for Protection of NDDC Solar Streetlights

0

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reiterated its commitment to sustainable development through community-focused projects across the Niger Delta, following the installation of solar-powered streetlights in Wakama-Ama Community, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Dokubo Samuel Richard, Youth Secretary of the Wakama-Ama Community, described the impact of the project on daily life and security in the area. “This light is our security, but we need your eyes to protect it,” he said while speaking on the importance of safeguarding the infrastructure.

According to him, the intervention has changed night-time activities within the community. “Before these lights, our nights were darker. Now, our streets are safer. People can move freely, and businesses can stay open till late. It’s a positive development,” Dokubo stated.

He, however, raised concerns about vandalism of the solar facilities, warning that such acts undermine collective progress. “It’s painful to see some people become enemies of progress,” he said, referring to individuals who damage the solar panels. “They are stealing light from their own families and neighbours.”

Dokubo called for stronger community involvement to protect public assets. “We cannot accept this infrastructure and look the other way. To truly protect this progress, we need internal security, local vigilance. We need every resident to be a guardian. If you see something, please, say something. Let’s protect what is ours, together,” he added.

The NDDC said infrastructure delivery and community protection also guide programmes like its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicle Conversion Programme, focused on skills, sustainability, responsibility.

Akwa Ibom Begins Final Civil Service Oral Interviews

The Akwa Ibom State Government has commenced the oral interview stage of its ongoing civil service recruitment exercise for candidates who successfully passed the Computer-Based Test (CBT), bringing the process closer to final selection.

The interview exercise officially began on Monday at the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service Commission Headquarters, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, Uyo. This stage represents the final phase of the recruitment process, following the completion of online registration and the CBT.

Speaking with journalists at the venue, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Ekereobong Umoh, assured residents that the exercise would be transparent, fair, and credible, in line with the directive of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno PhD.

Mrs. Umoh expressed appreciation for the smooth take-off of the interview process, noting that the governor has full confidence in the Commission.

“We thank God for today. This marks the beginning of the final stage of the recruitment process. His Excellency has absolute confidence in the Commission and believes strongly that the process must be transparent, fair, and inclusive, giving qualified Akwa Ibom people the opportunity to serve in the civil service,” she said.

She stressed that integrity remains her guiding principle, assuring candidates that the interview stage would be handled with seriousness and fairness.

“Anyone who knows me understands my commitment to integrity. This process will be conducted excellently well. Only those who registered on the portal, followed due process, and passed the CBT are here today. This is the final stage of selection,” Mrs. Umoh added.

The Commission Chairman explained that the interview panel would screen candidates, verify their credentials, and ask questions relevant to their professions to determine suitability for civil service appointments.

She disclosed that the interview exercise commenced with candidates from the health sector, noting that professionals in this area are expected to meet high standards.

“The health sector is our starting point. These are professionals, and we expect their credentials and competence to be in order. From indications so far, the process will be smooth,” she said.

According to her, the Commission is conducting the interviews with the support of resource persons drawn from various ministries and professional fields, including directors and heads of departments, who will assess candidates based on professional requirements.

“In the health sector alone, we have over 20 cadres, and heads of the various professions are on ground to ensure that candidates meet the required standards. We will replicate this process across other sectors,” she explained.

Mrs. Umoh further assured that all over 12,000 candidates who passed the CBT would be screened in batches, stressing that the process would remain orderly.

Describing the recruitment exercise as a landmark initiative, she commended Governor Umo Eno for introducing a system that guarantees equal opportunity for all applicants.

“This is a novel idea and a clear demonstration of His Excellency’s commitment to fairness. He made it clear that if you did not register, even if you are his child, you are not eligible. That level of transparency speaks volumes,” she said.

She reaffirmed her readiness to fully implement the governor’s directive and deliver a credible recruitment process that will leave Akwa Ibom people satisfied.

Soludo Orders Closure of Onitsha Main Market Over Sit-at-Home

0

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra has ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week following the continued sit-at-home directive being observed by traders in the commercial hub.

The governor gave the order on Monday in Onitsha shortly after visiting the market and noting that the refusal of market leadership and traders to open for business was against government directives.

According to Soludo, the decision represents the latest and most drastic step to determine who controls time and economic life in Southeast Nigeria on Mondays.

“The enemy is the long-standing, fear-enforced Monday sit-at-home order, a ghostly mandate from non-state actors that has strangled businesses and normalised weekly Monday sit-at-home for years,” he said.

He added that despite repeated assurances of improved security and several appeals to reclaim public spaces, many traders at the iconic market again chose to keep their shops locked.

Soludo noted that the absence of traders was not just a quiet protest but a strong signal of the deep fear that still exists within the business community.

He said government could not continue to watch while a few individuals deliberately undermined public safety and ignored official directives aimed at restoring normal economic activities.

The governor warned that if the market failed to reopen fully after the one-week shutdown, it would be sealed for one month and extended further if necessary.

“You either decide that you are going to trade here or you go elsewhere. I am very serious about this,” Soludo said.

Security presence was heavy at the market as a joint task force comprising police, army and other security agencies secured the area and turned back traders who attempted to gain access.

The Anambra Government also announced the commencement of pro-rata salary payments for workers across the state as part of measures to end the Monday sit-at-home directive enforced by the Indigenous People of Biafra. Officials said the policy was aimed at restoring confidence, productivity and normal weekly business activities across affected communities.

HYPREP Trains Ogoni Youths in Mechatronics, Aviation Skills

0

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has launched two new training programmes focused on high-demand skills as part of efforts to build local capacity and support economic recovery in Ogoni.

Recently, 100 Ogoni youths began a four-month Mechatronics training at the University of Port Harcourt Offshore Technology Institute, while 19 others started orientation for a six-week Cabin Crew training programme in Lagos. The initiatives form part of what HYPREP describes as a “gentle revolution” in human capacity development aimed at equipping beneficiaries with globally competitive skills during the ongoing Ogoni cleanup.

Speaking at the launch of the Mechatronics programme, Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, represented by the Director of Technical Services, Prof. Damian-Paul Aguiyi, said the training reflects a shift from low-end to high-end skills acquisition. “HYPREP is making good its commitment to giving the best to the people of Ogoni,” Zabbey said, adding that the project plans to deliver 10 similar programmes this year.

He explained that the programmes include full-stack development, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cybersecurity, rope access, commercial diving, mud logging and agric-skills, all designed to improve employability and self-reliance. The Mechatronics trainees were selected through a Computer-Based Test conducted in February 2023.

Participants are expected to gain theoretical knowledge and practical engineering skills, as well as training in team management for digital oil and gas operations, safety standards and creative problem-solving. The programme is being delivered by consultant Mr Makozi Samuel of Competent Samco Technical Nigeria Limited.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill, commended the collaboration, describing the skills as economically viable. “This training equips trainees with globally relevant expertise,” he said, urging commitment.

The Paramount Ruler of Barako Community and University Governing Council member, HRH Mene Kadilo Kabari, and Engr. Ehioze Igbinomwanhia of Renaissance Africa Energy Company also encouraged the trainees. Igbinomwanhia reaffirmed support for HYPREP’s cleanup and livelihood initiatives, stressing the wide opportunities in mechatronics.

Prof. Bourdillon O. Omijeh, National Coordinator of Nigeria’s Embedded AI Project, delivered a keynote on mechatronics in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, positioning the trainees as pioneers.

In Lagos, Zabbey congratulated the 19 Cabin Crew trainees, describing their participation as “the beginning of a new chapter” in aviation. The training follows an earlier phase that trained 30 youths, aligning with HYPREP’s mandate to promote sustainable livelihoods. “A gentle revolution is underway in Ogoni,” Zabbey said, charging participants to become “carriers of hope” and ambassadors of the cleanup’s economic impact. He added that the skills gained could open doors in oil and gas, aviation and technology sectors seeking trained talent. HYPREP officials said certificates will be issued to trainees who complete programmes successfully.
