Zamfara trains 150 women, 3,000 youths in digital skills under ZITDA

The Zamfara State Government says it has trained 150 women in digital skills and empowered them with tools and funding as part of a wider digital transformation drive led by the Zamfara Information Technology Development Agency, ZITDA, over the last two years.

The initiative, implemented under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Dauda Lawal, Executive Governor of Zamfara State, is aimed at using technology to improve governance, expand economic opportunities, and promote social inclusion across the state.

ZITDA, under the stewardship of its Executive Secretary, Habib Gajam, Ph.D., has introduced bold reforms, built strategic partnerships, and accelerated the deployment of digital infrastructure, repositioning Zamfara as an emerging digital leader in Nigeria.

Speaking on the progress recorded, the agency said the NCC-ZITDA Women Digital Skills Program trained 150 women, each of whom received an Android device, certification, and a N100,000 startup grant, alongside a special reward package for the best 10 performing participants. According to ZITDA, the programme was designed to help women transition from basic digital literacy to income-generating activities.

In addition to women-focused initiatives, ZITDA disclosed that over 3,000 Zamfara youths have been trained through the Oracle-ZITDA Skills Initiative. The training covered cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and database technologies, while the Oracle Academy programme supported capacity building for faculty members and students in tertiary institutions across the state.

Zamfara also became the first state in Nigeria to launch a comprehensive Zamfara Digital Literacy Framework, ZDLF, targeting youths, women, civil servants, students, entrepreneurs, and the general public. Officials described the framework as a structured approach to ensuring no group is left behind in the digital economy.

As part of institutional reforms, the Zamfara State House of Assembly passed the enabling bill for the establishment of the Zamfara Institute of Information Technology, ZIIT, in October 2025. ZITDA said the institute is envisioned as a world-class ICT education and innovation hub that will support skills development and research.

To strengthen internal capacity, members of the State Executive Council were trained on basic computer operations and Microsoft Office tools to improve digital readiness within government. The agency also trained 30 fellows for a 12-month internship programme under the Nigeria Jubilee Fellowship, in collaboration with the UNDP, covering digital skills, administrative operations, and office management.

ZITDA further organized Experience AI Workshops in collaboration with WOMEN in TECH to introduce artificial intelligence concepts at the public secondary school level. Phase I and Phase II each trained 20 students and five teachers, focusing on foundational AI knowledge, ethical use, and practical exposure.

Reflecting on the journey, ZITDA stated that the last two years have laid a strong digital foundation for Zamfara State, adding that the agency remains committed to expanding digital inclusion, strengthening governance, and driving sustainable development through technology.

ZITDA said, “these investments show our commitment to people-centered innovation and preparing citizens for opportunities in the digital economy statewide.”

Senator launches agricultural empowerment scheme in Ibarapa

Senator Sharafadeen Alli has announced a personally facilitated agricultural empowerment programme aimed at boosting productivity and employment across Ibarapa Central and North Federal Constituency, with expert Gbenro Abraham unveiling a phased scheme targeting women, youths and men.

The announcement was made during a meeting with farmers, community leaders and party stalwarts from the seven principal towns in the constituency, where the senator said agriculture remained central to economic growth and food security. He explained that the programme would be implemented in phases to ensure inclusiveness and sustainability.

“This initiative is designed to equip our people with practical skills, modern techniques and support that will improve output and create jobs,” Alli said, noting that the scheme would focus on empowering different groups based on their needs and capacity.

The agricultural engagement formed part of broader consultations held at the Olu of Igboora Palace, where the senator met traditional rulers of Ibarapa Central and North, alongside executives of the Igboora Progress Union, IPU. Alli reaffirmed his commitment to addressing key development challenges facing the constituency.

Issues discussed included electricity supply, agricultural development, security, youth and artisan empowerment, traditional institutions, the abandoned Igangan General Hospital and the proposed Federal Medical Centre.

The senator disclosed that the Federal Medical Centre bill had passed all legislative stages and was awaiting Presidential assent. He credited Reps Muraina Saubana and Bayo Adepoju for their collaboration, saying, “We have worked together to ensure this project reaches an advanced stage.”

Alli expressed optimism that the centre would soon address healthcare challenges across Ibarapa communities.

On infrastructure, he said construction work had commenced on the Badagry–Sokoto Expressway linking Igboora and pledged continued engagement with the Minister of Works.

Addressing electricity challenges, Alli said he had engaged the Minister of Power and promised intervention to restore supply to Ibarapa North. He projected visible improvements within six months.

Earlier, IPU interim president, Pastor Alex Oladeji, represented by Vice President 1, Rev. Sanya Akinlade, outlined concerns on electricity, roads and healthcare, urging intensified interventions on priority projects.

JAMB Sets 2026 UTME Registration Dates, Age Rules, Live CBT Monitoring

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced new monitoring measures, age eligibility rules and registration timelines ahead of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry exercises. The updates were disclosed in Lagos on Saturday during a meeting with Commissioners for Education.

Speaking at the meeting, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said UTME registration will take place from January 26 to February 28 at all approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres nationwide. He clarified that the sale of UTME application documents, known as the ePIN, will begin earlier than the registration period.

“The sale of UTME application document which is the ePIN, will start earlier than commencement of actual registration which is January 19 to February 26. Actual UTME registration period is between January 26 to Febuary 28 at all approved CBT Centres,” Oloyede said.

He disclosed that the selection for the mock examination will close on February 16. He also said the sale of Direct Entry (DE) application documents and ePIN vending will begin on March 2 and close on April 25.

“The close of mock selection is February 16 while the sale of DE application documents and E-PIN vending will commence on March 2, and close by April 25,” he added.

On monitoring, the registrar announced tighter oversight of registration centres, noting that all CBT centres will be monitored live from JAMB headquarters.

“Any centre whose registration activities cannot be viewed from the headquarters will not be paid, while such registration may be invalidated,” he warned.

Oloyede disclosed that 924 CBT centres have been screened and provisionally listed, but said the centres will still undergo a final test before full accreditation. “They will go through the final test before final accreditation,” he said.

On payments, the registrar stated that candidates are not required to pay any service charges to CBT centres.

He also spoke on complaints about candidates being posted to distant examination locations, stating that candidates will not be posted outside the towns selected during registration.

“The choice of a group of towns implies that candidates can be posted to any of the towns in the chosen group,” he explained.

Oloyede warned candidates to declare any previous registration or admission history, citing cases of malpractice recorded during the previous UTME. He stressed that it is a criminal offence to run more than one undergraduate programme at the same time.

“Failure to disclose such prior admission is an offence which will be sanctioned,” he said.

On age eligibility, Oloyede stated that candidates must be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2026, to be considered for admission. He added that underage candidates would only be considered after a rigorous assessment process.

“Underage candidates who will be less than 16 years old by 30th September, 2026, will undergo an intensive evaluation to determine their eligibility for a waiver, and such candidates must have scored not less than 80 per cent in each of UTME/A’LEVEL, PUTME, SSCE and in the exceptional candidate assessment.”

He also disclosed that, unlike last year, the UTME results of underage candidates will only be released after the full evaluation process has been completed for transparency and fairness nationwide exercise overall.

Katsina Invests N6.1bn in Scholarships for 174,451 Students

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has disclosed that the state government has invested over N6.1 billion in scholarship awards for no fewer than 174,451 students in tertiary institutions, including those studying abroad, as part of its long-term commitment to human capital development.

The governor made this known during the 17th Convocation Ceremony of Al-Qalam University, Katsina, where honorary doctorate degrees were conferred on former Governor of Katsina State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, and His Royal Highness, Eze Abdulfatah Chimaeze Emmanuel III, the Chief Imam of Owerri Central Mosque.

According to Governor Radda, the scale of investment reflects his administration’s priority on education as a driver of growth and development. “The huge investment in scholarships, teacher recruitment, school infrastructure and skills development is aimed at preparing our youths academically, morally and economically to compete favourably in the modern world,” he said.

He described education as the most powerful instrument for empowerment and sustainable development, stressing that the government is focused on laying a solid foundation for learners from basic to tertiary levels across the state.

“Our objective is to ensure that our children are properly grounded from primary and secondary school, so that when they get to higher institutions, they are mentally, academically and morally ready to face global challenges,” the governor stated.

Governor Radda further revealed that the state government has recruited 7,326 teachers and trained over 20,000 others to strengthen teaching quality in public schools. He added that several classrooms have been renovated and constructed, modern schools established, and skills centres set up to support learning beyond the classroom.

He also highlighted the creation of the Katsina State Enterprise Development Agency, KASEDA, which he said is designed to equip youths and women with employable and entrepreneurial skills that can help reduce unemployment and poverty.

“At every stage, our focus is to equip our youths not only with certificates, but with knowledge, skills and character that will make them useful to themselves and society,” Governor Radda said.

At the convocation ceremony, the governor announced the donation of three brand new vehicles to reward academic and religious excellence. He said the vehicles would be presented to the overall best graduating student and two outstanding Qur’an memorizers who emerged winners in the Musabaqatul Qur’an, Gwani and Gwana categories.

“This is in recognition of their dedication and excellence, and to motivate other youths to pursue both religious and Western education with seriousness,” he stated.

Governor Radda noted that Islam places strong emphasis on knowledge and moral uprightness, adding that honouring young Qur’anic scholars encourages the blending of sound religious values with modern education for balanced personal and societal development.

He congratulated the management of Al-Qalam University on the successful convocation ceremony and commended the institution for its approach to integrating Islamic education with conventional academic studies.

“Al-Qalam University has continued to complement government efforts in providing quality education and in nurturing responsible, morally upright citizens,” the governor said.

He recalled that the Katsina State Government donated the land on which the university is located and recently approved the construction of a perimeter fence to improve security on the campus.

“Our support for Al-Qalam University has been consistent, and we will continue to partner with the institution to ensure a safe, secure and conducive learning environment,” he added.

Governor Radda also congratulated the honorary award recipients, describing Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari as a seasoned administrator, statesman and mentor, and His Royal Highness, Eze Abdulfatah Chimaeze Emmanuel III, as a respected religious leader known for promoting peace, unity and moral development.

“These honours are well deserved and reflect your immense contributions to governance, faith and community development. You are role models to our youths and to society at large,” he said.

Earlier, the Chancellor of Al-Qalam University, Professor Nasiru Musa Yauri, said the institution has continued to record steady progress in teaching, research and the integration of religious and modern studies. He disclosed that winners of the Musabaqatul Qur’an, Gwani and Gwana categories, received a cash prize of One Million Naira each, in addition to other honours.

Also speaking, Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari urged universities to embrace technology and innovation, stressing that education must go beyond certificate acquisition to practical and problem-solving skills. “Technology is key to development in agriculture, security, healthcare and service delivery. Our youths must become creators of solutions, not just users of tools,” he said, while emphasizing the need to uphold strong moral and religious values.

The ceremony was attended by the Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura; the Chief Judge of Katsina State, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar; the Emir of Katsina, Dr. Abdulmumini Kabir Usman; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir; the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Abdullahi Aliyu Turaji; Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura; members of the State Executive Council, as well as vice chancellors, traditional rulers, security chiefs, academics, students and parents.

UN Targets 2.5 Million Nigerians With $516m Humanitarian Plan for 2026

The United Nations has launched the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, targeting 2.5 million Nigerians for assistance with a funding requirement of $516 million, as humanitarian needs continue to rise across the country. The UN said about 5.9 million Nigerians are currently in need of humanitarian support, warning that worsening insecurity, climate shocks, and declining global funding are deepening the crisis.

The disclosure was made at the official launch of the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, where humanitarian agencies expressed concern that limited resources are forcing difficult choices. According to the plan, assistance will focus on the most vulnerable 2.5 million people out of nearly six million Nigerians in need, at a time when global humanitarian financing is under pressure.

The United Nations noted that humanitarian needs are increasing rapidly, especially in conflict-affected areas of the northeast. The situation, it said, is compelling aid agencies to scale back or prioritise operations as funding continues to shrink. Despite these challenges, the UN stressed the importance of sustaining life-saving interventions for affected populations.

Through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, the Federal Government said it will continue to provide policy direction, coordination, leadership and system alignment. This, according to officials, is to ensure that humanitarian efforts complement broader national reforms aimed at reducing poverty, strengthening human capital and building resilient communities. Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu said, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, one of the critical policy shift under Renew Hope Agenda is the emphasis on prevention and preparedness.” The official added that “Nigeria can no longer afford a cycle of responding to predictable shock without addressing underlying risk.”

Across the country, humanitarian needs are rising as families face increased food insecurity and economic pressure. Children are facing alarming levels of malnutrition, while civilians in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states continue to live in fear of increased violent attacks. Children remain among the most affected groups. UNICEF disclosed that about three million Nigerian children are acutely malnourished, describing the nutrition crisis as widespread and stressing that life-saving support, including ready-to-use therapeutic food, must be sustained.

State governments also warned that growing humanitarian challenges are exposing children to child labour and early marriage. With funding under strain and needs continuing to rise, stakeholders said sharper prioritisation, improved coordination and sustained support are critical to protecting the most vulnerable, particularly children, warning that this is not the time to scale back life-saving interventions.

0

Tai Solarin Federal University of Education has announced the commencement of Entrepreneurship as a full degree programme. The announcement was made by the acting vice chancellor, Professor Adekunle Olanrewaju Adeogun, during a press briefing to herald the commencement of the university’s 17th convocation ceremonies.

Professor Adeogun disclosed that a dedicated Centre has been created for Entrepreneurial Studies to support the new programme and strengthen skills-driven education. He explained that the move builds on TASUED’s long-standing focus on practical learning and graduate self-reliance.

According to him, TASUED currently operates a vibrant vocational education programme under which every student, regardless of course of study, must undergo training in a vocation and pass the required university-based examination before graduation. He said this structure ensures that graduates leave the institution with employable and entrepreneurial skills.

The acting vice chancellor also announced that the National Universities Commission has approved 12 new undergraduate programmes and four academic programmes at the doctoral level. He noted that this approval reflects the university’s steady growth and commitment to academic development.

Professor Adeogun said the university’s curricula have been continuously reviewed to align with global best practices, with stronger emphasis on STEM education, digital pedagogy, entrepreneurship, and inclusive education. He added that these reforms are designed to prepare students for changing workplace and societal needs.

He listed recent achievements recorded by the university, including increased research productivity, competitive grants won by academic staff, and groundbreaking national and international scholarly engagements. Other gains, he said, include infrastructure development and rehabilitation, such as new lecture theatres, laboratories, and improved learning facilities.

“ICT capacity has equally been enhanced to support e-learning, virtual instruction, and digital administration,” he added. He also highlighted the peaceful atmosphere on campus, a stable academic calendar, and a serene learning environment.

According to Professor Adeogun, the management has consistently maintained industrial harmony, resulting in uninterrupted teaching, research, and learning across the university. He described this stability as a key factor in the institution’s recent progress.

The acting vice chancellor acknowledged the support of friends of the university, particularly Senator Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West, “who donated five minibuses, solar-powered lighting facilities, and computer laptops to the university.” He said, “These contributions have greatly enhanced our mobility, security, and ICT capacity.”

He also acknowledged the assistance of Chief Dr Dotun Sanusi, the CEO of Ilaji Hotels and Resorts, who donated a fully equipped Staff Club building to improve the welfare and recreational life of the university’s workforce. Other benefactors include Chief Yemisi Shyllon, who donated a statue of educationist and civil rights crusader, Tai Solarin.

Professor Adeogun further mentioned Dr Taiwo Olayinka Afolabi, chairman and CEO of SIFAX Group of Companies, who donated a staff Guest House currently under construction within the Ijagun campus, among other contributions.

Speaking on graduation statistics, he disclosed that 4,785 regular students would be graduating, with 40 earning First Class honours, 1,466 in the Second Class Upper Division, and 2,768 in the Second Class Lower Division. He said 492 obtained Third Class, while 19 earned Pass degrees.

He added that 269 part-time graduands would take part in the ceremony, alongside 88 graduands from the Nigerian Army College of Education. At the postgraduate level, 356 graduands would be produced, including PGDE, PGD, M.Ed, M.Sc, M.A, M.A Ed, MLIS, and 90 PhD holders.

“These figures reflect the growing academic strength and postgraduate capacity of the University,” he said.

Professor Adeogun also announced that honorary doctorate degrees would be conferred on three distinguished Nigerians during the convocation ceremony.

JAMB Screens 924 CBT Centres Ahead of 2026 UTME

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has screened a total of 924 Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres nationwide ahead of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this on Saturday during an interactive session with state Commissioners for Education held in Lagos.

Oloyede said the centres would still undergo a final test before receiving full accreditation to participate in the 2026 UTME registration and examination.

According to him, the accreditation exercise was carried out to determine the suitability of CBT centres for the examination process.

He explained that the exercise involved Chief External Examiners, including vice chancellors, rectors and provosts, as well as technical advisers, JAMB state coordinators and technical officers.

The registrar stated that the meeting with commissioners was aimed at strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure smooth registration and the conduct of the 2026 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) examinations.

Oloyede said the forum also provided an opportunity to share JAMB’s vision, policies and strategies for the 2026 exercise, including measures to enhance integrity and efficiency.

Speaking on the registration timeline, Oloyede said the sale of UTME application documents, known as e-PINs, would commence before the official registration period.

He stated that UTME registration would run from January 26 to February 28 at all approved CBT centres nationwide.

He added that the sale of e-PINs would begin earlier, from January 19 to February 26, while registration for the mock examination would close on February 16.

On Direct Entry, Oloyede said the sale of application documents and e-PINs would begin on March 2 and end on April 25.

He added that Direct Entry registration would also be available at all JAMB offices.

Speaking on eligibility, the registrar said only candidates who would be at least 16 years old by September 30 would be allowed to apply for the 2026 UTME.

He noted that underage candidates would only be considered in rare cases and would be subjected to an intensive evaluation process.

According to him, such candidates must score at least 80 per cent in UTME, A’ level, Post-UTME, SSCE and the exceptional candidate assessment.

Oloyede warned that candidates involved in examination malpractice, including identity manipulation and multiple registrations, would be disqualified.

He revealed that JAMB uncovered syndicates during the 2025 UTME that specialised in identity manipulation using multiple National Identification Numbers (NINs) during the examination period.

MDCN announces remediation programme for foreign-trained doctors and dentists

0

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has announced a six (6) month remediation programme for foreign trained graduates of Medicine and Dentistry who have completed their training and obtained medical or dental degree certificates. According to the Council, the programme is designed “to update their knowledge and skills in line with the standards required for medical and dental practice in Nigeria.”

The MDCN stated that the programme will run from Monday 16 February, 2026 to Friday 14 August, 2026. It will take place at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja. The Council explained that the exercise is part of its responsibility to ensure quality and uniform standards in medical and dental practice across the country.

Under the eligibility criteria, the Council noted that the programme is meant for medical and dental graduates who completed their training and obtained medical or dental degree certificates from their country of training. It added that “submissions will be reviewed and only eligible candidates will be enrolled.” The MDCN also warned that online course work and unregulated “clinical rotation in home-country” are not acceptable.

For registration, the Council directed applicants to register through its official website at www.portal.mdcn.gov.ng/remediation/programme. Interested applicants are required to upload electronic copies of relevant academic qualifications, including GCE, SSCE, NECO or equivalent certificates, with five (5) credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two sittings, as well as medical or dental degree certificates.

Other required documents include relevant portions of the International Passport showing visa, arrival and departure pages, a colour passport-size photograph, and a birth certificate or statutory declaration of age. The MDCN disclosed that the registration portal will open on Monday, 26 January, 2026.

On fees, the Council stated that the non-refundable training fee is “one million, two hundred thousand naira only (N1,200,000.00) per applicant.” It added that dental applicants will pay an additional N100,000.00 for dental materials, noting that the fees exclude accommodation and feeding.

The MDCN also issued an important notice to those affected by the Ukraine and Sudan conflicts, describing the exercise as “a final call” and compulsory for applicants whose training was disrupted by the 2022 Ukraine war and 2023 Sudan conflict.
