14 Corps Members Trained on Climate Literacy, Grassroots Action

0

Fourteen corps members have been equipped with climate literacy and grassroots engagement skills at a climate literacy train-the-trainers workshop organised by young climate advocate, Tolulope T. Gbenro, in partnership with the Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative, BBYDI.

The workshop formed part of the Eco Champions Programme supported by SOS Children’s Village Nigeria and was designed to prepare corps members to drive climate awareness and action within their primary assignment communities.

In her welcome remarks, Gbenro said the initiative was inspired by her years of experience in climate action and lessons from her national service year in Ilorin, which strengthened her resolve to deepen climate awareness among people.

Setting the tone for the workshop, the National Programme Manager of SOS Children’s Village Nigeria, Mr David Gabriel, provided an ethical framework for the initiative, linking environmental degradation to child rights concerns such as displacement, loss of education, health challenges and increased vulnerability.

Gabriel charged participants to prioritise child safety and inclusion in their climate engagements, especially for the most vulnerable groups, noting that climate action must consider its social impact on families.

Delivering the keynote address themed “Mobilising Grassroots Action,” Chika Ernest Okoli described climate action as a people-driven movement rooted in local ownership rather than top-down directives.

Drawing from his experience in community mobilisation, Okoli encouraged participants to see themselves as catalysts capable of igniting action in their host communities through storytelling, advocacy and practical initiatives such as community gardens and waste management systems.

Gbenro later facilitated a foundational session on climate change in Nigeria, breaking down key concepts by distinguishing between weather and climate and explaining the greenhouse effect using simple analogies.

The session examined Nigeria-specific impacts, including altered Harmattan patterns, flooding, agricultural disruption, rising food prices and related health concerns, equipping participants with facts to counter misinformation.

Ameedat Abdulsalam led a session on community engagement strategies, focusing on cultural sensitivity, power mapping to identify key influencers such as religious leaders and PTA heads, and approaches for co-creating solutions.

In a hands-on methodology session, Rifikatu Joseph Odeyemi introduced the “Learn, Simplify, Teach” model, demonstrating the use of flashcards, interactive question-and-answer formats and time management techniques for effective school presentations.

Dasola Adelegan guided participants through steps for initiating school-based climate actions, including forming Eco-Clubs, setting up waste sorting stations, organising community clean-ups and launching Adopt-a-Tree initiatives.

A career-focused session by Chizoba Nzeakor explored opportunities in climate-related fields such as policy, technology, finance and communication, offering guidance on skill specialisation, portfolio development and professional networking.

Some participants, including Kave Blessing and Michael Onoja, described the training as simplified, detailed and empowering, saying it improved their confidence to engage communities on climate issues.

The workshop concluded with a programme implementation session reviewing key deliverables, reporting templates and follow-up expectations.

Certificates were presented to participants, alongside the distribution of BBYDI Climate Champs flashcards and the announcement of follow-up virtual sessions.

The next phase of the initiative aims to reach over 400 Nigerians through step-down trainings to be implemented by the fellows nationwide.

In her closing remarks, the Programme Director of BBYDI, Mrs Halimat Olufade, urged participants to remain committed to the project’s next phase and to fully utilise the opportunities provided through the fellowship.

DSI Movies launch to empower youths for careers in film industry

Don Singles International (DSI), a foremost showbiz and personality promoter in Nigeria, is set to launch DSI Movies to create opportunities for talented youths seeking careers in the Nigerian film industry.

The plan was disclosed by Dominic Nwuzor, Chief Executive Officer of Don Singles International, while speaking with newsmen in Abuja over the weekend. Nwuzor, also known as Don Singles, said Nigeria is filled with young people with creative talent but many are unable to find platforms to express themselves due to systemic barriers, limited infrastructure, and economic challenges.

According to him, unlocking this potential requires a shift from focusing only on “employment” to prioritising “empowerment” through investment in infrastructure, skills acquisition, and structured platforms for mentorship.

He noted that the nation’s film industry ecosystem has the capacity to absorb many unemployed youths and contribute meaningfully to national economic growth if properly organised and supported.

The DSI helmsman, who hails from Nibo town in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, said DSI Movies is designed as a grassroots-focused project. He explained that the initiative will be unveiled in his community and will enlist emerging talents from Awka North and Awka South, across Anambra State and beyond.

“Our emerging talents and creatives must be gainfully engaged and given the right spotlight to be discovered, and that is what DSI Movies is set to do in line with our broader objectives at Don Singles International,” he said.

Nwuzor added that “there are vast opportunities in the film industry for every talented and passionate youth out there, including acting, directing, cinematography and many other roles.”

He further said that “DSI Movies will bring emerging talents together to work with seasoned stars for productions and mentorship.”

He said the initiative aligns with his long-standing commitment to youth empowerment and to promoting socio-cultural and economic development within his community.

Nwuzor disclosed that the project will feature an array of stars, including artistes signed to the DSI label, such as Nollywood actor Smith Nnebe and others.

With nearly three decades of experience in Nigeria’s creative space, Don Singles International is recognised for discovering and promoting talents. Light up Oyo Central Programme launched in Laduntan Village

0

The Light up Oyo Central programme has been launched at Laduntan Village in Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, marking a new effort to extend electricity to rural communities across the senatorial district.

The programme is designed to bring electricity to farming communities and encourage inter communal relationships for mutual benefits among villagers.

Speaking at the launch at the weekend, a member of the Oyo State Advisory Council, Mr. Michael Lana, said many villages, including his own, have struggled for years to access basic amenities that can attract indigenous people back home to invest in agriculture and development.

According to Lana, “some of these villages lack facilities that can make young people return to farm and build livelihoods, but from now, there is a movement championed by me, a village boy, to drive provision of potable water and solar powered lights in our villages.”

He explained that communities should not rely solely on government, noting that government projects are numerous and competing for attention, making it important for concerned indigenes to contribute.

Lana cited the Circular road project, which he said is very close to villages, stressing that it has the potential to open up the economy of Ona Ara Local Government and other areas it passes through in the area.

He noted that villages would be the first beneficiaries of the development and said they must be ready to support opportunities that would come with it.

Lana lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for the initiative and urged villagers to prepare themselves to be part of the economic growth expected from the Circular road project.

Residents of Laduntan Village expressed happiness that one of their sons was thinking about welfare of villages, listing challenges such as a dilapidated school building and lack of teaching staff, with Lana promising to renovate the school.

He also visited Gbangba village, where he and his entourage met villagers and promised to extend the Light up Oyo Central programme.

Ekiti Govt trains over 50 cocoa farmers under TRACE Project

The Ekiti State Government says more than 50 cocoa farmers drawn from across the state participated in a three-day capacity-building training to improve cocoa quality and flavour for global competitiveness.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, stated this in Ado-Ekiti while reviewing the report of the training organised under the TRACE Project in collaboration with the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN).

Boluwade said the programme was designed to equip cocoa farmers with best practices for producing high-quality cocoa beans that meet national and international standards. He explained that the initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen the cocoa value chain in Ekiti State, raise farmers’ incomes and ensure compliance with global regulations, including the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

“The training featured both theoretical and practical sessions, with emphasis on proper harvesting and post-harvest handling practices,” the commissioner said. He added that the practical session, which held in Oye-Ekiti, exposed participants to standard harvesting techniques, fermentation processes, drying methods and quality preservation practices required for cocoa production.

According to him, CRIN supported the exercise by providing fermentation boxes free of charge to participating farmers as a way of encouraging the adoption of standard fermentation practices capable of improving cocoa quality and flavour. He noted that beneficiaries of the training are expected to share the knowledge gained with other cocoa farmers across cocoa-producing communities in the state.

“This will ensure wider impact, faster adoption of best practices and full compliance with international requirements, while positioning Ekiti cocoa as a globally acceptable product,” Boluwade said.

The commissioner commended the TRACE Project and CRIN for the collaboration and assured that the state government will continue to work with stakeholders to promote sustainable agriculture and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

Earlier, the Director of Tree Crops in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Tope Alao, said more than 50 cocoa farmers from across the state took part in the training. He said the programme consisted of a one-day theoretical session held in Ado-Ekiti and a two-day practical session conducted on cocoa farms in Oye-Ekiti owned by Messrs. Johnson Fabusuyi and Segun Olatunji.

N-HYPPADEC boosts livelihoods in Gombe host communities

0

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, N-HYPPADEC, has intensified efforts to improve the welfare and livelihoods of host communities in Gombe State through a series of engagements and development interventions aimed at addressing long standing challenges linked to hydroelectric power activities.

The Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Mr. Abubakar Yelwa, said the visit to Gombe was part of the Commission’s engagement tour of newly admitted member states, following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2023. He explained that the tour was designed to strengthen relationships with state governments and host communities while assessing priority needs.

Mr. Yelwa, who began the tour with a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, reaffirmed the Commission’s mandate to mitigate ecological damage arising from hydroelectric power operations and to promote sustainable development in affected communities. He said Gombe State qualified for membership because it hosts the Dadin Kowa Hydropower Dam.

According to him, N-HYPPADEC has already carried out several interventions in Gombe State. These include the supply of 1,100 life jackets to riverine communities, the provision of an operational flying boat to Kupto Community, installation of solar streetlights, construction of solar powered boreholes, desilting of drainages, construction of classrooms, and support for indigent students through the payment of National Examination Council, NECO, fees.

The Managing Director stressed the need for stronger collaboration with the state government, especially in the areas of flood mitigation, education and health infrastructure, youth employment, and the strategic establishment of Area Offices to improve service delivery. He also commended the Gombe State Government for supporting the establishment of the Commission’s State Office, describing the move as a clear demonstration of commitment to the welfare of communities affected by hydroelectric operations.

The Gombe State Government, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, reaffirmed the state’s readiness to partner with N-HYPPADEC to improve the welfare and livelihoods of residents. He praised the Commission for living up to the objectives of its establishment, noting that unlike many organisations that focus largely on internal development, N-HYPPADEC has prioritised projects that directly impact people’s daily lives.

While expressing appreciation for ongoing interventions in the state, including streetlights, life jackets for riverine communities and the payment of NECO fees, Dr. Jatau also welcomed the promised delivery of a 33 seater boat. He assured the Commission of the state government’s support through public enlightenment on the proper use of life jackets and other safety facilities, while appealing for wider coverage of N-HYPPADEC activities across all 11 local government areas.

The Deputy Governor further pledged the state’s technical support and local knowledge to assist the Commission in siting offices in areas most affected by dam operations. He added that the Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya administration had established the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park to create employment opportunities for youths, noting that the initiative aligned with N-HYPPADEC’s socio economic development focus.

The delegation also visited Nafada, where the Emir of Nafada, His Royal Highness Muhammadu Dadum Hamza, described N-HYPPADEC as the headquarters of rural development in Nigeria, citing the scale and impact of its interventions. He commended projects executed in Nafada and ranked the Commission first, second and third on the scale of productivity among development agencies operating in the area.

FG says over 100,000 vehicles run CNG, targets one million by 2027

0

The federal government, through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), says more than 100,000 vehicles and 4,600 tricycles, popularly known as keke, are now running on compressed natural gas across Nigeria, as the country targets the conversion of one million vehicles by 2027.

Mr Zayyanu Tambari, Chief Compliance Officer of PiCNG, disclosed this on Sunday in Abuja, recalling that as of 2023, Nigeria had only about 11,000 CNG converted vehicles nationwide.

“Currently, there are more than 100,000 cars that are using CNG on the Nigerian roads. Companies in the private sector and operators are refitting their fleet, especially the long haulage to move on CNG,” Tambari said.

He added that progress has also been recorded in vehicle assembly and deployment, noting that “there are more than 11,000 Natural Gas Vehicles (NGV) assembled, including haulage trucks and more than 4,000 Dangote Trucks.”

Tambari further disclosed that “more than 4,600 CNG tricycles, 510 CNG/AGO/PMS buses have been deployed. Our target is to covert one million vehicles by 2027.”

According to him, the presidential mandate is not limited to vehicle conversion alone but also includes factory-fitted vehicles, locally manufactured units, and imported vehicles running on CNG by 2027.

He said that when PiCNG was inaugurated, only 11 states had CNG infrastructure, but this number has grown to more than 23 states with active CNG footprint and conversion programmes, supported by 379 conversion centres nationwide.

“By the end of 2026, we will have taken the CNG footprint to every state, if not every senatorial district in Nigeria,” he said.

Tambari also revealed major growth in refuelling and technical capacity, stating that while there were just 20 refilling infrastructure facilities in 2023, Nigeria now has 58 refilling stations and 21 CNG mother stations, with over 6,300 technicians trained.

He said the initiative has attracted over $2 billion in investments into the CNG subsector and is targeting $5 billion by 2027, driven by increasing private sector interest.

Tambari recalled that President Bola Tinubu unveiled the PiCNG programme in 2023 as part of Nigeria’s energy mix, stressing the commitment to expanding CNG stations and EV charging infrastructure for affordable mobility.

“But if you look at what we have achieved, we are now growing in exponential progression, by 2027 we will exceed this target,” he said.
