NSITF, NECA Flag Off 2025 Safe Workplace Intervention Project

0

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, Barrister Olúwaṣeun Faleye, has said that economic activities and sustainable growth in Nigeria are built on the protection, responsibility to, and respect for the country’s workforce.

Faleye made this known at a press conference held to flag off the 2025 Safe Workplace Intervention Project, SWIP, an initiative jointly organised by NSITF and the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Assembly, NECA.

He explained that although the project was initially planned for 2025, it was shifted to January 2026 due to what he described as “operational exigencies on both sides,” making it necessary for the partners to reconvene at a later date.

Speaking on the rationale behind the initiative, Faleye said SWIP was developed as a response to ongoing workplace safety challenges across the country. According to him, “SWIP was conceived as a practical response to a persistent national challenge: the reality that too many Nigerian workers remain exposed to avoidable workplace risks, and too many employers still do not fully understand, or comply with, the protections provided under the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010.”

He added that the goal of the project goes beyond compliance alone. “The core purpose of SWIP is simple but profound: to save lives, protect livelihoods, and strengthen productivity by making workplace safety and compliance the norm rather than the exception,” he said.

Faleye further noted that legislation alone cannot address safety gaps in workplaces. “Experience has shown us that laws alone do not change behaviour. The Employees’ Compensation Act is robust, but its effectiveness depends on awareness, trust, and consistent engagement,” he stated.

He explained that many workplace accidents occur due to weak systems and limited understanding of risks, rather than deliberate neglect. “Many workplace injuries and fatalities occur not out of malice, but because safety systems are weak, risks are poorly understood, or compliance is viewed narrowly as a regulatory burden,” Faleye said.

According to him, SWIP was created to bridge this gap by translating legal provisions into everyday practice. He said the initiative brings the law to life, helps employers see the business value of compliance, and reinforces workplace safety as a human and economic necessity.

Faleye also called on journalists to play an active role in promoting safer workplaces nationwide. “The role of the media in this effort cannot be overstated. By telling these stories, highlighting best practices, and sustaining public conversation, you help reposition workplace safety from a peripheral issue to a national priority,” he said.

In a message delivered on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr. Sally Ousmane, the Director of Regional Health and Safety, Mrs. Florence Owie, commended NSITF and NECA for sustaining the initiative.

She said the Safe Workplace Intervention Project demonstrates the benefits of collaboration among government institutions, employers, and social security bodies. “The Safe Workplace Intervention Project is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved through effective collaboration between governments, employers, and social security institutions,” she said.

She disclosed that the 2025 edition of the project audited at least 200 workplaces across the six geopolitical zones of the country, with technical support from the ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health Department.

According to her, the ministry’s involvement was to ensure the audits met national occupational health and safety standards and aligned with global best practices.

Also speaking at the event, the Director-General of NECA, Mr. Adewale Smatt Oyerinde, said occupational safety and health has become a core convention of the International Labour Organization.

He explained that the SWIP awards are aimed at encouraging voluntary compliance among employers. He revealed that some organisations that emerged as winners will receive ambulances and personal protective equipment in Lagos, Enugu, and Abuja on January 20, 22, and 27, 2026, respectively.

On the credibility of the selection process, Oyerinde said it involved rigorous auditing and multi-level scrutiny to ensure fairness and transparency.

Looking ahead, he noted that occupational safety and health discussions would increasingly focus on emerging issues linked to artificial intelligence, remote work, and other technological innovations.

In a call to action, the Executive Director of Operations at NSITF, Hon. Mojisola Ali-Macaulay, said the joint assessment carried out by the Federal Ministry of Labour and NSITF confirms that safe workplaces are achievable.

She urged employers to urgently institutionalise preventive safety measures and encouraged award-winning organisations to serve as ambassadors by sharing best practices within their sectors.

Ali-Macaulay also called on NECA to intensify advocacy efforts, while urging stakeholders to deepen collaboration through stronger inspections, quicker interventions, and improved enforcement.

She appealed to the media and the public to keep occupational safety and health issues visible, stating that safe work is a shared responsibility and a key foundation for national productivity and economic stability.

Benue Set to Create 20,000 Jobs With $250m National Food City

0

Benue State Government is set to create over 20,000 jobs following the attraction of a $250 million National Food City Complex project to the Ojoma-Akpa community in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state.

The investment was earlier disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the Benue Investment Promotion Agency (BENIPA), Dr. Terhemen Johnpaul Kpenkaan, during a courtesy visit to the Och’Idoma palace in Otukpo on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. He said the project reflects the state government’s commitment to driving large-scale investments that can generate employment and strengthen food production.

Dr. Kpenkaan explained that the project, tagged National Food City Complex, is expected to provide a permanent response to prevailing security challenges by engaging youths in productive activities. According to him, Governor Hyacinth Alia wants Benue to become the “Food Basket of Africa” through mechanised agriculture that supports farming, processing, storage and distribution.

Responding on behalf of the paramount ruler, the first class Chief of Otukpo-Ohimini, HRH Emmanuel Okochi, thanked the governor for choosing their land for the project. He appreciated what the administration was doing for the state and pledged the cooperation and backing of the traditional institution, not only for the project but for all government efforts aimed at development.

Also speaking at the community centre, the Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals, Rev. Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, encouraged residents to take ownership of the project. He told the community that their future was in their own hands and depended on how they handled the opportunity, urging them to act responsibly and peacefully.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Benjamin Ashaver, represented by Adum Awav, urged the community to form a land committee and organise themselves properly. He said clear coordination would help avoid confusion as the project progresses and ensure smooth implementation.

Consultant on the project, Dr. Shima Adum, charged the youth to prepare for the days ahead, noting that many jobs would be available when the project finally starts. He advised young people to position themselves to benefit from the opportunities that would come with the investment.

In his address, the Operations Manager of the foreign investor, Rexzodeneh Group Limited (RGL), Abusafiah Ramzi, said Benue would not only become the food basket of Africa but of the world. He said the company would not only invest in agriculture but also provide education, healthcare, roads and security in host communities.

Ramzi pledged the commitment of the company to work with the community to make the world hear about Benue State, describing the project as an answered prayer of the community. The lawmaker representing Otukpo-Akpa, Hon. Kennedy Angbo, thanked Governor Alia for locating the project in his constituency and expressed joy that he was towing the path of his late father after 30 years.

Other speakers, including youth leader Comrade Ondoma Ikam, representative of the All Farmers Association, Ogah Emmanuel, and Ene Eimonye for Zone C women, expressed happiness over the project and pledged their support. Community elders later carried out a symbolic handover of the land to the investors, witnessed by the two commissioners, other top government functionaries and community members.

In the latest development, Executive Secretary of BENIPA, Dr. Terhemen Johnpaul Kpenkaan, led a state government delegation alongside members of the investor consortium to Onyoma community in Akpar District of Otwe Local Government Area. They were received by traditional leaders, chiefs and residents of the community.

Addressing the gathering, he charged the host community to ensure the safety of foreign workers and the entire project. He conveyed the governor’s message, saying, “When the governor came to you seeking land for this project, you gladly obliged him. He asked me to thank you.” He said the availability of land had given investors confidence to take over the site and identify locations for camps and project offices.

He announced that within one to two weeks, equipment would be moved to the site and work would begin with clearing and paving access roads to allow heavy equipment reach the main project area. He urged the community to sustain its commitment, especially as foreign workers would be involved.

He asked for assurances on security, saying the governor believed the community’s support meant his presence. He added that the project would bring healthcare upgrades, education facilities and other benefits. “Do we have a clinic here? We will make it a hospital. Do we have a secondary school? We will get,” he said.

He noted that up to 3,000 youths in the community could benefit, with transportation provided to the site. He said there would be immediate engagement of 1,000 youths in security and the creation of over 20,000 jobs overall. He added that local farmers would benefit as RGL would buy their produce for mechanised processing.

The official handing over of the land title deed to RGL was conducted on site. Benue is one of six states selected for the National Food City Complex and the first to kick-start implementation, including the training of 1,000 youths in security.

Tinubu Laying Foundation for Growth, Says Information Minister

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is laying strong foundations for long-term growth and shared prosperity, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said. The Minister made the statement when he received members of the Grassroots Advocacy for Tinubu (GAT) 2027 during a courtesy visit in Abuja.

Idris said the current administration has taken bold and sometimes difficult decisions aimed at placing Nigeria on a more sustainable economic path. He explained that although some of the reforms were challenging, early signs of recovery are already becoming visible across key sectors of the economy. “These steps were taken to stabilise the economy and restore confidence,” the Minister said. “What we are seeing today is the foundations of long-term growth and shared prosperity.”

He stressed that Nigeria’s improving economic outlook must be protected through unity, responsible communication, and collective support for national policies. According to him, negative and distorted narratives about the country can damage investor confidence and slow down development efforts. “We must speak positively and truthfully about Nigeria,” Idris said. “When we project stability and unity, we attract investment and create opportunities for our people.”

The Minister commended the GAT 2027 group for what he described as responsible civic engagement and its willingness to support accurate public information. He welcomed the group’s proposal to partner with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation in public enlightenment, youth engagement, and strategic communication. “Advocacy groups play an important role in helping government policies reach the grassroots,” the Minister said, adding that “effective communication is essential to national stability and development.”

Idris also reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to building a country that works for all citizens, regardless of religion or background. He noted that national cohesion remains central to the administration’s vision and is necessary for achieving lasting development. He assured the delegation that the Ministry would continue to collaborate with credible groups to ensure accurate information is widely shared, stressing again that effective communication is key to sustaining public trust in government.

Earlier, the GAT 2027 National Coordinator, Professor Ochugudu Achoda Ipuele, said the visit was to formally brief the Minister on the group’s activities and to express solidarity with his mandate. “We are here to solidarise with you on the mandate you have for Nigeria, which is to inform the country, clarify government policies, and take information to the grassroots,” he said.

Ipuele added that the group is committed to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies by countering distorted narratives, especially during election periods, and by engaging young people across the country. “This group is poised to respond in real time to false or misleading information in the public space and to engage the youth, so that as we approach 2027, the Renewed Hope agenda continues with even more programmes for the country,” he stated.

VDM Launches $4,000 Acting Challenge to Honor Mercy Johnson

Popular social media activist and influencer VeryDarkMan has announced a new online acting challenge with a total cash reward of $4,000. The challenge is open to content creators and aspiring actors across major social media platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. According to him, the initiative is designed to prove a point and celebrate talent, while also honoring a Nollywood legend he deeply admires. Participants are expected to carefully follow the rules, create a one-minute acting clip, and demonstrate emotional range similar to what is commonly seen in top Nollywood performances.

About the Challenge

VDM explained that the challenge was created to honor his personal acting legend, Mercy Johnson. He stated that he considers her the greatest actress of all time because of her ability to switch emotions effortlessly within a single scene. According to him, she can move from laughter to tears and back again in a way that feels natural and convincing.

He said many people often compare Mercy Johnson to other respected actresses and question his opinion. To address this, he decided to give people the opportunity to show that acting such emotional transitions is easy, as some critics claim. The challenge is therefore meant to test real acting skills, especially emotional switching, within a short time frame.

Prize Money

The total prize money for the challenge is $4,000, shared equally across four social media platforms.

The breakdown is as follows:

  • $1,000 for Instagram winner
  • $1,000 for Facebook winner
  • $1,000 for TikTok winner
  • $1,000 for YouTube winner

Each platform will have one winner, making a total of four winners.

Who Can Participate

The challenge is open to everyone who believes they have acting talent. There are no restrictions on location, age, or professional background. Participants do not need expensive equipment or professional cameras.

According to VeryDarkMan:

  • You can record from your room
  • Any phone camera is acceptable, including entry-level smartphones
  • Video quality is not a deciding factor
  • Acting skill and emotional delivery matter most

He emphasized that the challenge could also open doors for talented actors, as it provides exposure that could attract opportunities from the film industry.

How to Participate

Participants are required to create and upload a one-minute acting video that tells a short but clear story. The focus should be on switching emotions, particularly from happiness to sadness, within the one-minute duration.

The guidelines include:

  • Record a one-minute acting clip only
  • Create a short storyline that makes sense within one minute
  • Switch emotions clearly, especially from a happy mood to a crying or emotional mood
  • Use the song NBA YoungBoy featuring Burna Boy, Teary Eyes, as background music
  • Upload the video to any of the eligible platforms

The background song choice was explained as intentional because the selected part of the song is emotional and helps bring out strong feelings in acting performances.

Music Requirement

All videos must use Teary Eyes by NBA YoungBoy featuring Burna Boy. Participants are expected to act in sync with the emotional tone of the song. This helps the judges and viewers assess how well the actor can interpret emotions through facial expression and storytelling.

Judging Process

VeryDarkMan stated that he intends to personally ask Mercy Johnson to judge the challenge. According to him, she will select participants who best demonstrate strong acting skills and the ability to switch roles convincingly, just like she does in movies.

He also encouraged participants to tag Mercy Johnson and Burna Boy when uploading their videos. He noted that comments from either of them would help highlight outstanding performances. Any participant whose acting attracts positive attention from them stands a higher chance of being selected.

Deadline

No fixed deadline was announced at the time of the challenge launch. Participants are advised to upload their videos as early as possible to increase visibility and engagement.

How to Apply

To apply for the challenge:

  • Record a one-minute acting video
  • Use Teary Eyes by NBA YoungBoy featuring Burna Boy as background music
  • Upload the video on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or YouTube

Kebbi Shortlists 8,000 Farmers for NG-Cares Fadama Grants

Kebbi State Government has shortlisted over 8,000 small-scale farmers drawn from all the 21 local government areas of the state to benefit from the Fadama component of the NG-Cares programme.

The programme is a tripartite scheme financed by the World Bank, the Federal Government and Kebbi State Government to support small-scale farmers and cushion the effect of the covid-19 pandemic on agricultural activities.

Under the arrangement, Kebbi State Government is expected to receive a loan of 20 million dollars, which will be disbursed to qualified beneficiaries as grants, in line with the objectives of the NG-Cares programme.

The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abba Sani Kalgo, disclosed this at a news briefing following a meeting with the Commissioner for Local Government and all the 21 local government chairmen. The meeting was chaired by Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

Kalgo said Kebbi State Government had completed all required processes for the take-off of the programme, noting that the intervention primarily focuses on food security, Fadama cultivation, access roads, livestock production, fisheries and the provision of agricultural inputs to farmers.

He explained that part of the funds would be used to construct five kilometres of access roads in each of the local government areas to ease the movement of farm produce and livestock from rural communities to markets.

According to him, farmers cultivating different crops, as well as those engaged in livestock production and fisheries, are eligible to benefit from the grants under the programme, provided they meet the set requirements.

Kalgo added that Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu has directed the ministry and other relevant authorities to develop sustainability strategies that would allow the scheme to continue beyond the initial two-year period designed for the programme.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Hassan Muhammad Shalla, led local government chairmen and directors of agriculture from the councils to the meeting with the governor.

Shalla told journalists that the forum discussed agricultural development in all its aspects under the NG-Cares programme.

He said the governor stressed the need to consolidate the gains already recorded by Kebbi State in agricultural revival by increasing the production of food and cash crops, while also strengthening animal husbandry and fish farming across the state wide.
