World Bank TRIMING boosts irrigation farming in Northern Nigeria

0

Smallholder farmers across the world are facing growing pressure from rising food demand, climate shocks, and water scarcity, according to a World Bank report that highlights the need for more resilient farming systems. In northern Nigeria, these challenges are being addressed through the World Bank-supported Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project, which is helping farmers increase yields, raise incomes, and adapt to changing weather conditions.

In Kano State, farmer Mustapha Adamu recalls how difficult farming was a decade ago. The 6,000-hectare stretch of land he now oversees was once hard to cultivate due to poor access to water, weak soil conditions, and unpredictable rainfall. Each planting season came with uncertainty and losses.

“Things were bad here,” says Mustapha, who leads a Water Users’ Association made up of hundreds of irrigation farmers. “Farming this land was a tough task.”

According to the report, conditions have begun to improve following targeted investments in irrigation and water management. With support from TRIMING, farmers like Mustapha now have better control over water supply, allowing them to plan planting seasons more confidently and farm their land more intensively.

The TRIMING project is led by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and financed by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA). The initiative focuses on modernizing irrigation systems, improving water governance, and upgrading key infrastructure to support long-term agricultural resilience.

Nigeria faces strong economic and demographic pressure. With more than 70 percent of its population under the age of 30, demand for jobs continues to rise. Agriculture contributes nearly one quarter of the country’s gross domestic product and employs over a third of the population, making it central to economic stability. However, climate change has increased risks for farmers through longer dry seasons, frequent flooding, and irregular rainfall patterns.

Despite having available water resources, less than one percent of Nigeria’s farmland is irrigated. As a result, most farmers still rely on rainfall, leaving them highly exposed to climate shocks. The TRIMING project targeted this gap by rehabilitating irrigation systems and training farmers across four major schemes: Kano River, Hadejia Valley, Bakolori, and Dadin Kowa.

In Mustapha’s area of Kano State, irrigated land has expanded to more than 15,000 hectares. The land is now farmed more productively, with improved cropping cycles and better resource use. Canals were cleared, access roads repaired, and communities trained on efficient water use and system maintenance.

A core part of the project was the creation and strengthening of more than 800 Water Users’ Associations (WUAs). These groups help farmers jointly manage water resources, maintain shared infrastructure, and resolve local irrigation challenges.

In Jigawa State, rice farmer Musa Idris says improved irrigation has changed his output levels. “Before the project, we faced many challenges with water,” he says. “We used to get about 15 to 20 bags of rice per acre. Now, we get between 30 and 35 bags. We are preparing the land to plant tomatoes and rice, and after that, we will get ready for wheat.”

Women farmers have also benefited from the changes. Hajiya Ramatu, a farmer and deputy leader of a women’s group, says irrigated farming support was limited before TRIMING began in 2014. “That has changed – women are actively involved now,” she says. “You can see this lane of rice—we are going to make some good money from it.”

Her group expanded its farmland from 22 hectares to 37 hectares. Improved rural roads have also reduced transport challenges, helping farmers move produce to markets faster. Ramatu says the income gains have supported her household, allowing her son to attend university.

Overall, the TRIMING project improved and expanded irrigation across 43,400 hectares. According to the World Bank, the increased production is enough to feed about one million people, mainly farmers and their families. With support from the Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership (GWSP), the project also strengthened dam safety, improved drainage, reduced sediment buildup, and promoted sustainable water management practices.

Building on these results, a follow-on initiative known as the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria project is planned to scale up irrigation development with continued IDA support.

Nigeria’s population is projected to reach 400 million by 2050, increasing pressure on food systems. To respond, the government aims to irrigate 500,000 hectares by 2030 to raise food production, strengthen food security, and improve rural livelihoods.

Globally, smallholder farmers remain on the front lines of rising food demand, climate stress, and water shortages. By 2050, the world population is expected to reach 10 billion, with food demand rising by more than 50 percent. The World Bank says irrigation can increase yields and food supply.

Over 50 farmers have graduated from the Farmer Field School (FFS) programme organised under the Ekiti State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), aimed at strengthening agribusiness capacity and improving livelihoods across the state.

The graduation followed a series of targeted capacity-building trainings held in different locations across Ekiti State, focusing on key livestock value chains relevant to local farmers and traders.

In Ado-Ekiti, 33 participants drawn mainly from goat and sheep trading clusters received training on Business Skills for Small Ruminant Traders. The sessions focused on record keeping, cost–benefit analysis, market access, and strategies to support sustainable business growth.

Also, 22 participants from Ikere-Ekiti benefitted from specialised training on the broiler value chain. The training exposed participants to best practices in broiler production, feed management, disease control, processing, and marketing, with the aim of improving productivity and profitability in the poultry sector.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe, represented by the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Dr. Tajudeen Odewale, said the trainings were designed to equip farmers and livestock value chain actors with practical knowledge and skills.

According to him, “the goal is to help participants manage their enterprises as viable businesses while responding to modern market demands.”

He explained that the Farmer Field School approach encourages hands-on learning, peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, and the adoption of modern, climate-smart livestock practices. He added that the project is committed to empowering farmers, traders, and processors to increase income, reduce losses, and improve food security in Ekiti State.

Participants commended the Ekiti State Government and L-PRES for the initiative, describing the trainings as timely and impactful. Many participants pledged to apply the knowledge gained to improve their businesses and share lessons with other farmers in their communities.

The Ekiti State L-PRES continues to implement strategic interventions focused on strengthening livestock value chains, building resilience, and promoting sustainable agricultural development

Luno, AltSchool Africa to train 15,000 Nigerians in free crypto programme

Luno has announced a strategic partnership with AltSchool Africa to launch a free crypto education programme for 15,000 Nigerians. The beginner-friendly course will begin in March 2026, run through the year, and mark what both companies describe as Africa’s largest coordinated crypto literacy initiative to date.

Announced earlier today in Lagos, the partnership brings together Luno, a global cryptocurrency platform, and AltSchool Africa, an accredited online learning provider, to deliver a fully funded beginner course titled Demystifying Crypto for Africans.

The programme is designed to improve financial literacy, build trust in digital assets, and encourage safer participation in the rapidly expanding digital economy.

Nigeria remains one of Africa’s most active crypto markets. Around a third of the population already engages with digital assets, driven largely by a young, tech-savvy demographic seeking alternatives for savings, remittances, and global trade.

However, the speed of adoption has also exposed significant gaps in knowledge, leaving many users vulnerable to misinformation, scams, and poorly understood financial risks.

Combining Luno’s focus on responsible crypto use with AltSchool Africa’s experience in delivering accessible digital education, the initiative aims to provide structured, practical learning grounded in African realities.

The course content is tailored to everyday use cases, rather than speculative trading alone, with a strong emphasis on safety and informed decision-making.

The programme will run from March 2026 through the end of the year and will be delivered in three cohorts of 5,000 learners each. Cohort one commences in March 2026 after applications in January and February. Cohort two starts in July 2026. Cohort three follows suit in November 2026. The organisers say the staggered approach will allow them to refine delivery and scale support.

The programme will be led by Web3 educator Abdulsamad Tiamiyu and structured as a three- to four-week course, with learners receiving up to one year of access to materials.

Participants will move through five core modules covering the fundamentals of cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, wallets, exchanges, stablecoins, and research tools such as CoinGecko and Etherscan. The curriculum blends theory with hands-on experience, allowing learners to interact directly with digital tools they are likely to encounter in real-world financial activities.

Those who complete the assessments will receive an AltSchool Africa Certificate of Completion.

Ayotunde Alabi, CEO of Luno Nigeria, described the partnership as a timely intervention. He said that as crypto adoption accelerates across Africa, education must keep pace to ensure people can participate securely and sustainably. According to Alabi, the initiative reflects Luno’s long-term investment in building trust and integrity within the digital asset ecosystem, while helping users turn perceived risk into meaningful economic opportunity.

Adewale Yusuf, co-founder and CEO of AltSchool Africa, echoed the same sentiment, framing the programme as an investment in economic empowerment. He noted that access to clear, practical education is essential if Africans are to participate fully in the global digital economy and said AltSchool was proud to collaborate with a partner that prioritises clarity and measurable impact.

The programme is open to Nigerian residents aged 18 and above who can commit to completing the course within four weeks. Applicants must have, or create, a Luno account before enrolling. Applications open in January 2026 via the AltSchool Africa portal, with successful candidates notified within one week. Organisers said participation is fully free and aims to reach learners nationwide digitally
