The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered no fewer than 250 less-privileged elderly persons in Nasarawa State with N50 million to improve their livelihoods.

Speaking at the disbursement exercise on Tuesday in Lafia, the state capital, the First Lady explained that the funds were provided through the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme of the current administration. She said each beneficiary would receive N200,000 to help them enjoy better old age experiences.

Mrs Tinubu, who was represented at the event by the Wife of the Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, Shela Akabe, said the gesture was driven by a firm commitment to the welfare of elderly citizens in the state.

Akabe said the scheme was designed to support elderly citizens aged 65 years and above across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as well as veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.

“Each state of the federation, the FCT, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association were given N50 million, amounting to N1.9 billion,” she said.

She explained that the initiative aligned with the Renewed Hope agenda of the Federal Government, which focuses on inclusive growth and shared prosperity by ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind.

The First Lady also recalled that she had supported more than 100,000 women petty traders and small business owners, including Persons Living With Disabilities, with direct financial grants over the last two years to help grow their businesses.

She said the elderly deserved special care and attention, particularly during the festive season, to enable them enjoy the period with dignity and comfort.

“The elderly citizens need to be taken care of, especially during this festive season to enable them enjoy the period,” she said.

“They have walked difficult paths so that the younger generations may have smoother roads to travel and it is our duty to make life worthwhile for them at this point.

“My advice to the senior citizens is to do all that is possible to find joy in old age. Let us also find purpose in community, compassion, and care. Let us remember that old age is not about longevity, but is about being surrounded by love, support and respect.”

Nigeria’s first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered 250 vulnerable elderly indigents in Anambra State with N250,000 cash each through the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme, aimed at promoting the well-being of elderly citizens and ensuring they live with dignity and joy.

The empowerment took place on Tuesday in Awka, where the wife of the Anambra State governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, represented the first lady and supervised the distribution of funds to beneficiaries.

The scheme, themed ‘Finding joy in old age’, is in its third edition and is designed to support 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 years and above in each of the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, as well as veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.

According to the programme, a total of 9,500 elderly persons are targeted nationwide, with N1.9 billion approved for disbursement by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative. Each state of the federation, including the FCT and DEPOWA, is to receive N50 million.

Dr Soludo, who read the speech of Senator Tinubu, said that since the inception of the current administration in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has made it a tradition to celebrate senior citizens every December in recognition of their contributions to nation-building.

She said, “This social investment programme embodies our ongoing effort to ensure that our elderly citizens live with dignity and joy, in a nation that genuinely cares for its own.”

She added, “Through this scheme, we have continued to express our gratitude and care for the men and women who have laboured to build the Nigeria we are all proud to be part of today.”

Explaining the scope of the programme, she said the scheme supports 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in all the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory, and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.

“These 9,500 selected beneficiaries will receive N200,000 each,” she said.

She further stated, “The total sum to be disbursed is N1.9 billion as approved by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative. Each state of the federation will receive the sum of N50 million, including the FCT and DEPOWA.”

Soludo said the timing of the scheme was important as the festive season approaches, stressing the need to prioritise elderly citizens.

“As we approach the festive season, it is crucial to emphasise the importance of prioritising our elderly citizens in our initiatives. They have walked difficult paths so that the younger generations may have smoother roads to travel,” she said.

“It is therefore our moral duty, and indeed our joy, to ensure that they live their twilight years in comfort, good health, and dignity,” she added.

She said, “Let us remember that ageing gracefully is not just about longevity but about being surrounded by love, support, and respect.”

“I encourage you to continue playing your part by staying healthy and active. Nurture both your body and mind through regular exercise and meaningful engagement,” she added.

Expressing appreciation, Soludo conveyed the first lady’s gratitude to stakeholders supporting the programme.

She said, “I say thank you for your service, your sacrifices, and your prayers for our great nation. May God continue to grant you good health, peace, and renewed hope.”

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all Your Excellencies, the State Coordinators of RHI, and partners for your support with this scheme,” she said.

“As the year draws to a close, I wish each of you a peaceful and joyous holiday season, and I pray that 2026 will bring renewed hope and greater accomplishments for us all and our beloved nation,” she added.

“Happy Yuletide Season. God bless Anambra State. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she said.

Kano Hosts Women Creative Business Boot Camp for Over 100 Entrepreneurs

A one-day Women Entrepreneurship Boot Camp tagged “Scale Your Creative Business” has been held in Kano, offering renewed hope for women seeking economic independence through the creative industry. The event was organised by Terra Academy for the Arts (TATFA) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and took place at the Northwest University City Campus, Kano, over the weekend.

The programme brought together over 100 women entrepreneurs, creatives and aspiring business owners from across Kano and neighbouring states. Participants focused on building sustainable creative enterprises, improving business skills and strengthening women’s economic resilience through shared learning and practical sessions designed for the local context.

TATFA, established in 2022, has emerged as a growing force within Nigeria’s creative ecosystem. The academy is committed to nurturing, training and sustaining talents in the creative arts while also empowering Nigerian youths with practical business and entrepreneurial skills that support long-term income generation.

Through its collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, TATFA has continued to expand access to opportunities for women and young people who are often excluded from mainstream economic participation. The partnership targets skills development, enterprise growth and inclusion within the creative economy, especially for underserved communities.

Speaking at the event, Fatima Aliyu explained that the boot camp was organised in partnership with Bridge Connect Africa Initiative (BCAI), a Kano-based non-governmental organisation focused on social inclusion and economic empowerment. She said the partnership responded to concerns about the link between women’s economic vulnerability and gender-based violence in northern Nigeria.

Aliyu noted that many women in the region face limited access to education, finance and market opportunities. According to her, these barriers increase economic dependence and expose women to various forms of abuse. “When women are economically empowered, they are better positioned to make choices, protect themselves and contribute meaningfully to their families and communities,” she said.

She added that BCAI supported the programme to provide a safe platform for women to network, share experiences and learn directly from women who have achieved professional and entrepreneurial success. The initiative aims to inspire participants, build confidence and create mentorship pathways that can help women scale businesses beyond subsistence level.

Speaking to BusinessDay on the sidelines of the programme, Yahuza Shehu Atta, Enterprise Development Manager of TATFA in Kano, disclosed that over 100 women participated in the boot camp. He said the programme equipped participants with practical skills in business development, branding, marketing, financial management and leveraging the creative economy for income generation.

Atta said women entrepreneurs in northern Nigeria face multiple barriers that hinder growth, including limited access to startup capital and credit facilities, restrictive cultural norms, low digital literacy and weak market access. He added that insecurity and poverty further compound these challenges. He noted that the creative sector offers flexibility, home-based production and wider digital reach. “Our goal is to help women see their creative skills not just as hobbies, but as viable businesses that can grow, employ others and generate sustainable income,” Atta said. The organisers said programmes would be expanded nationwide soon.

FG Reaffirms Push for Commercial Farming and Food Security

The federal government has restated its commitment to increasing agricultural productivity, improving livelihood opportunities, and promoting wealth creation across Nigeria.

Abubakar Kyari, the minister of agriculture and food security, made this known on Tuesday during the ministerial sectoral retreat themed “Performance Improvement and Strategic Alignment” held in Abuja.

Kyari said that agricultural transformation through strategic leadership was aimed at enhancing agricultural development and ensuring food security in the country. He recalled that President Bola Tinubu, at the beginning of his administration, declared a state of emergency in the agricultural sector to allow the Council of State to include water and food as high-priority areas.

“It is to make us transit from subsistence to a commercial farming system, since food sufficiency contributes to national sovereignty and stability,” Kyari stated.

He explained that the ministry was collaborating with several international partners to secure funding and technical expertise to support its agricultural programs. According to him, the government’s ongoing efforts are focused on ensuring farmers’ safety, managing agricultural landscapes, providing rural infrastructure, and promoting research and innovation.

“Our Ministry is committed to leveraging technology, innovation and climate-smart agriculture to boost productivity and resilience. We are also delivering the National Food Reserve Programme of mopping-up excess production, balancing price volatility and enabling farm output,” he said.

Kyari further disclosed that both the federal and state governments are partnering with Belarus Messrs, John Deere, and Brazil to manufacture agricultural machinery that would help close the tractorisation gap in Nigeria.

“In this respect, we are collaborating with stakeholders to stimulate and accelerate the production and processing of leading agricultural commodities. Let us recommit to our mission to feed Nigeria, create jobs and drive economic growth through sustainable agriculture,” the minister added.

He emphasized the need to make farming more competitive, highlighting the importance of agricultural production, industrial integration, and profitable agribusiness. Kyari also encouraged the culture of “Eating What We Produce and Producing What We Eat,” stressing the importance of self-reliance in food production.

In his remarks, Aliyu Abdullahi, the minister of state for agriculture and food security, explained that the retreat was designed to enhance capacity building, research, and innovation within the sector.

“The central aim of the ministry is to promote sustainable agriculture and achieve food security in Nigeria. The directorate cadre is pivotal in advancing this agenda,” Abdullahi said.

Earlier, Marcus Ogunbiyi, the permanent secretary of the ministry, described the retreat as both timely and strategic. He said the event provided an opportunity for reflection and strategic repositioning of the ministry and its agencies to ensure greater effectiveness in fulfilling their mandate.

In a goodwill message, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, head of the civil service of the federation (HoCSF), stated that the theme of the retreat reflected the core values of the Federal Civil Service.

She noted that agriculture remains a key driver of food security and economic growth in Nigeria. Walson-Jack was represented at the event by Alfred Abah, the senior special assistant to President Tinubu on civil service matters.

Senate Urges FG to Subsidise Fertilisers as Falling Prices Hurt Farmers

0

The Senate has called on the Federal Government to introduce broad-based agricultural input subsidies, particularly for fertilisers and other farm inputs, as part of urgent steps to protect Nigerian farmers from the sharp drop in prices of agricultural produce. Lawmakers warned that the situation, if not addressed, could threaten millions of livelihoods and worsen the country’s fragile food security.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje representing Gombe Central, which drew attention to the growing imbalance between falling farm-gate prices and the persistently high cost of agricultural inputs.

In its resolutions, the Senate commended the Federal Government for the recent reduction in food prices across the country through the granting of waivers and special permissions for large-scale importation of food products. Lawmakers noted that this policy had provided relief to Nigerians facing a cost-of-living crisis.

However, the Senate expressed concern that the same measure had created unintended consequences for local farmers. “The lowering of the cost of food products has brought succour to Nigerians but has at the same time created special problems for the Nigerian farmers,” the resolution stated.

Senator Goje explained that while the prices of farm produce had been declining, the cost of essential inputs such as fertilisers, pesticides, and insecticides had remained extremely high. “This situation places enormous pressure on farmers’ earnings and sustainability,” he said. He added that the trend “gravely threatens the livelihood of millions of smallholder farmers who constitute the backbone of Nigeria’s food production system and depend almost entirely on farming as their primary and sole source of income.”

Seconding the motion, Senator Aliyu Wamakko representing Sokoto North stressed the need for government policies that ensure balance between food affordability for consumers and sustainable income for farmers. He emphasised that addressing high input costs was essential to boost production and ensure food security.

Senator Dandutse Mohammed from Katsina South described the motion as timely, pointing out that more than 60 per cent of Nigerians rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. He lamented that fertiliser prices had risen to over ₦60,000 per bag while produce prices continued to fall, warning that unchecked food importation and lack of subsidies were damaging the agricultural sector and contributing to insecurity.

Senator Steve Karimi representing Kogi West raised concerns over insecurity in farming communities, noting that it remained a major threat to food production and farmer safety. Senator Idiat Adebule of Lagos West questioned the role of state governments in supporting federal agricultural initiatives, calling for stronger collaboration between different levels of government.

Also contributing, Senator Victor Umeh representing Anambra Central said that while temporary border relaxation during periods of scarcity might be necessary, farmers must receive adequate support in the form of affordable inputs and stable commodity prices. He warned that Nigeria’s increasing dependence on imported food commodities would “weaken national food sovereignty, undermine domestic value chains, distort local markets and discourage the growth of agro-processing industries.”

The Senate further noted that such dependence could expose the national economy to global price volatility and foreign exchange pressures. Lawmakers stressed the need for effective coordination among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), state governments, commodity boards, agricultural cooperatives, and other stakeholders to achieve fair pricing, improve storage, enhance transportation, and strengthen market linkages.

As part of its resolutions, the Senate urged the Federal Government to design and implement a Special Emergency Intervention Package to support farmers affected by the collapse in agricultural produce prices. The aim, lawmakers said, is to cushion their losses and protect household stability.

The Senate also recommended the establishment of a Benchmark Minimum Price Framework for major agricultural commodities, alongside a Guaranteed Off-take Programme that would allow government to purchase produce directly from farmers at benchmark prices to stabilise the market.

In addition, the lawmakers called on the Federal Government to introduce broad-based subsidies for fertilisers and other farm inputs, and to prioritise investment in strategic agricultural infrastructure such as storage facilities, rural roads, processing centres, and irrigation systems to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance profitability for farmers.

CBN Revokes Licences of Aso Savings, Union Homes Mortgage Banks

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operational licenses of Aso Savings and Loans Plc and Union Homes Savings and Loans Plc as part of efforts to re-position the mortgage sub-sector and promote compliance with laws and regulations.

The action was taken in exercise of powers conferred on the CBN under Section 12 of BOFIA 2020 and Section 7.3 of the Revised Guidelines for Mortgage Banks in Nigeria.

According to the regulator, the affected institutions violated several provisions of BOFIA 2020 and the Revised Guidelines for Mortgage Banks in Nigeria. These include failure to meet the minimum paid-up share capital requirement for the category of bank licence granted to them by the CBN.

The banks were also found to have insufficient assets to meet their liabilities, while being critically undercapitalised with a capital adequacy ratio below the prudential minimum ratio prescribed by the CBN.

In addition, the institutions failed to comply with several directives and obligations imposed on them by the CBN over time in the sector nationwide.

The apex bank said the decision aligns with its mandate, stating that it “remains committed to ensuring financial system stability.”

PHALGA Mayor Disburses N100,000 Grants to 500 Women Entrepreneurs

The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area (PHALGA), Sir (Hon.) Allwell Ihunda, DSSRS, JP, on Monday, 15 December 2025, disbursed business grants of N100,000 each to 500 women selected from the 20 wards of the local government area. The initiative targets small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) and marks the first phase of the administration’s empowerment programme, organised as part of activities to commemorate the Mayor’s first 100 days in office.

The empowerment and disbursement ceremony brought together beneficiaries, political leaders, and stakeholders. Speaking at the event, the Mayor said the grants fulfilled a campaign promise and reflected a deliberate effort to strengthen women-owned businesses while improving household livelihoods across Port Harcourt City.

“The essence of this gathering is to support your business. We want to empower you so that we can empower your business and empower your family as well,” he said.

Sir Allwell Ihunda recalled that in the previous year, his administration implemented skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes that trained over 1,300 beneficiaries, with women forming the majority. He said participants received training in catering and bakery, tailoring, gele-tying, makeup artistry, cosmetology, photography, soap and air-freshener production, and other income-generating skills aimed at improving self-reliance.

Sharing a personal experience, the Mayor narrated how the programme had changed lives. “One day, a woman walked into my office with products she made herself. She told me that through our training programme, she was now able to support her family and paying her children’s school fees. I was proud, happy, and fulfilled,” he said.

He explained that the current financial grants were designed to help women scale existing businesses and urged beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely, noting that timely capital can make a difference when well managed.

The Mayor announced that the women-focused grants represent the first phase of a broader empowerment drive. He said subsequent phases would extend support to youths and men across the local government area, assuring residents who were not selected in this batch that additional phases would follow.

“Nothing is too small to start or support a business. What matters is how you manage the money and how you manage your business. We carefully selected beneficiaries from all 20 wards. Those who did not benefit this time should not worry, the next phase is coming very soon,” he assured.

Sir Ihunda said women were prioritised because of their role as caregivers within families. He noted that empowering women strengthens families and communities, adding that each beneficiary received a 10kg bag of rice.

Beyond the empowerment programme, the Mayor outlined achievements recorded within his first 100 days in office. He cited the ongoing renovation of Township Model Primary School and Iche Akarolo Model Primary School, previously vandalised by criminals. He also disclosed that drainages were being desilted across flood-prone areas to reduce flooding ahead of the rainy season, alongside progress in furnishing the newly built council office complex.

In his goodwill message, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Engr. Solomon Ejike Ogbonna, commended the Mayor for initiating what he described as an unprecedented women empowerment programme. He said the initiative demonstrated purposeful and compassionate leadership, adding that “when righteous leaders govern, the people rejoice,” and assured beneficiaries that subsequent phases would follow.

Also delivering a goodwill message, Hon. Inime Aguma, former Commissioner for Women Affairs, praised the Mayor for prioritising women empowerment and urged him to expand the initiative.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Linda Amadi-Oparaeli expressed gratitude to the Mayor for the financial support and the business management lecture delivered by the resource person, Mrs Amara Dike. She assured that the funds would be judiciously utilised to grow their businesses. The event also attracted goodwill messages from political leaders and stakeholders across Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.
