Nigeria–China tech deal targets jobs and skills boost

A new technology transfer agreement between the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) and the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer (PICTT) is expected to open more job opportunities, improve local skills and expand access to advanced technology for ordinary Nigerians. The memorandum of understanding, according to the committee, is designed to strengthen industrial development, support local content and create clearer pathways for Nigerians to benefit from China’s growing investments in the country.

Dr Dahiru Mohammed, Chairman of the committee, said the partnership will immediately begin coordinated programmes that support local participation in infrastructure and industrial projects. He explained that the framework will guide how Nigerian workers, students and entrepreneurs benefit from ongoing and future Chinese investments.

Mr John Uwajumogu, Special Adviser to the President on Industry, Trade and Investment, said the deal will help attract high value investments that can stimulate job creation and strengthen Nigeria’s economy. He stated that the collaboration is expected to translate into real economic gains for communities.

Ms Judy Melifonwu, Head of International Relations at the partnership, highlighted that Nigerians stand to gain from expanded STEM scholarships, technical training, access to modern technology and collaboration across key sectors including steel, agriculture, automobile parks and cultural industries. She said young Nigerians would increasingly find opportunities to learn new skills and build careers in emerging industries.

The Director-General of the partnership reaffirmed commitment to measurable results, noting that the cooperation will prioritise initiatives that deliver direct national impact. The memorandum signals a new phase of Nigeria–China cooperation focused on practical delivery, local content and opportunities that improve everyday livelihoods.

In February 2025, China announced an expansion of its Africa STEM Development Fellowship, pledging scholarships and industrial training slots for more than 5,000 Nigerian students in AI, engineering, renewable energy and manufacturing. Officials warned that without institutional frameworks to internalise those skills and convert them into local productivity, Nigeria would continue exporting talent.

Later in May, both countries broke ground on the Haier Automobile Industrial Park in Ogun State, a multi-billion-dollar facility expected to assemble electric vehicles, motorcycle components and automotive electronics locally.

The project requires deep technical skills Nigeria currently lacks, prompting calls for stronger technology transfer and human capital development, the same gap the new agreement aims to address.

Seven-Up Bottling Company (SBC) has held its 2025 Green Skills Bootcamp in Lagos, bringing together students, educators, environmental advocates, and government representatives to showcase creative solutions to plastic waste pollution. The event highlighted SBC’s growing commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility as it works to empower young leaders to drive positive environmental change in Nigeria.

The bootcamp was part of SBC’s 2025 Sustainability Week and featured 36 students from 18 shortlisted schools. The participants went through practical sessions designed to improve their skills in upcycling, recycling, and entrepreneurship. Students displayed innovative products made from recycled materials, reflecting their dedication to environmental sustainability.

SBC’s Managing Director, Sari El-Khalil, applauded the students for their forward-thinking ideas, stating, “Your ideas today can shape a better world tomorrow.” His message underlined the potential of young Nigerians to influence environmental change if given the right education and tools.

Each student received a recycling toolkit to support continuous learning after the programme. SBC’s Head of Sustainability, Lovelyn Okoye, explained that the bootcamp aims to turn awareness into action by equipping students with the knowledge and tools to drive sustainability within their schools and communities.

Partner organisations also gave recognition to SBC’s efforts. LAWMA Academy and the Society for Corporate Governance commended SBC for its leadership role in youth-focused environmental education. Deputy Director of LAWMA Academy, Dr. (Mrs.) Bola Adewunmi, praised SBC for empowering young minds and shared inspiring examples of students turning waste into valuable products.

Chief Operating Officer of the Society for Corporate Governance, Dr. Tola Bamigbaiye, encouraged participants to view sustainability not only as a responsibility but as an opportunity for impact.

Yaba College of Technology further demonstrated the programme’s practical value by presenting a smokeless cooking solution made from agricultural waste, showcasing the potential of locally developed clean energy alternatives.

Teachers who guided and supported their students throughout the bootcamp were appreciated with certificates of recognition and gift items, acknowledging their dedication to environmental education and mentorship.

The bootcamp reflects SBC’s broader commitment to corporate social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and the development of youth-driven innovation. By creating a space for young people to demonstrate their abilities, SBC continues to invest in Nigeria’s future and promote a more sustainable society.

As Nkemdirim Agboti, Head of Function, Legal and Corporate Affairs, stated, “At Seven-Up Bottling Company, we believe that nurturing environmentally conscious young leaders is one of the most powerful investments we can make in Nigeria’s future.”

Gov Okpebholo Says Edo Is Safe And Ready For Investors

0

Governor Monday Okpebholo has declared that Edo State is now a business-friendly environment and ready to welcome investors to take advantage of opportunities in the state. The governor made the declaration at the weekend while hosting members of the South South Coalition of the Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (COSSCIMA). He was represented by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, who stated that the administration has continued to provide the enabling environment for businesses to grow.

In a statement signed by Mr Friday Aghedo, Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Okpebholo commended COSSCIMA for choosing Edo State as the host of its annual general meeting. He said the choice reflects the confidence investors now have in the state. According to him, “It is not surprising that you pick the state as a choice because we have provided the enabling environment by investing in infrastructure and reducing insecurity to the barest minimum. So, we assured potential investors that the state is safe, secured for all to come and invest.”

Similarly, the Commissioner for Business, Trade and Investment, Hon. Omoh Anabor, reaffirmed that Edo State is prepared to partner with firms with legitimate investment interests. He stressed that the government places priority on collaborations that can stimulate economic growth and job creation for young people.

President of COSSCIMA, Hon. Indutimi Komonibo, praised Okpebholo’s efforts, saying, “The Edo State Governor is doing a great job.” He emphasized that no government succeeds without working with the organised private sector. Komonibo explained that COSSCIMA members seek cooperation wherever they go, adding, “We carry the emblem of national development. Investors are looking for where their business will thrive. We understand the language of the business.” He noted that the coalition represents all six Chambers of Commerce from the South South region.

Recent assessments support the governor’s claims. In July 2025, Edo State was ranked among Nigeria’s top five states for ease of doing business in a survey conducted by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council. The survey cited improved digital land services, lower security risks and upgraded infrastructure as key reasons for rising investor interest. Analysts said this ranking strengthened confidence among private sector operators.

Further validating government claims, in September 2025 the state secured an agricultural investment agreement with a Netherlands-backed consortium for a $90 million oil palm project across Ovia and Uhunmwode. The deal highlighted policy stability and support systems as drivers of investor attraction.

Alternative Bank pushes tech support plan for young Nigerian innovators

0

The Alternative Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting young Nigerian innovators through access to technology, finance, and skills development. The bank made this known during the Jericho Businessmen Club’s third Annual Socio-Economic Summit, which gathered business leaders, academics, and policymakers to examine sustainable economic models and tackle the widening digital skills gap among youths.

In a statement on Sunday, the non-interest lender stressed that sustainable nation-building depends on deliberate investment in human capital. It explained that young innovators need ecosystem support, mentorship, and critical resources to turn ideas into scalable solutions. The Executive Director (South) of The Alternative Bank, Korede Demola-Adeniyi, said technology remains a core driver of inclusion and competitiveness, adding that strategic investment in youth-focused development is vital for Nigeria’s long-term resilience.

“Technology is the most potent equaliser in modern commerce, and by investing in the technological upliftment of our youth, we are future-proofing our economy. We believe in providing alternatives not just in finance, but in opportunity, ensuring that local talent have the tools and environment to compete globally,” he said.

The bank noted that it would explore strategic partnerships identified during the summit and introduce bespoke non-interest financing schemes for technology entrepreneurs and vocational skills programmes. It said the goal is to transform local innovation hubs into centres of excellence capable of producing world-class digital solutions.

According to the lender, its intervention aligns with Nigeria’s broader macroeconomic agenda to diversify revenue away from crude oil and stimulate emerging sectors. It stated that a vibrant technology space is key to building a knowledge-driven economy able to attract foreign investment and position the country competitively in the global digital chain.

It added that empowering youths with relevant skills will reduce unemployment and stimulate high-value services across industries. The bank maintained these outcomes are central to building a resilient economy capable of long-term growth.

The Alternative Bank also said discussions and resolutions from the Jericho summit reinforce its mandate to support inclusive development and impact-driven projects that benefit local communities. It pledged continued collaboration with private organisations, institutions, and industry bodies to create platforms that nurture innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

The summit, according to the bank, arrived at a critical time, emphasising that ongoing collaboration between business and education stakeholders is necessary to close the digital divide and ensure that Nigeria’s youths are prepared for the future of work. It affirmed that its participation highlighted its role in driving meaningful transformation in both finance and technology while positioning the youth as central contributors to the country’s digital journey.

Earlier, the bank unveiled a partnership pipeline involving universities, incubators, and coding academies to co-create learning pathways in fintech, robotics, business automation, and digital trade. This initiative followed internal research which showed that capital provision alone cannot close the innovation gap without skills transfer. Executives said the new partnerships would foster a more structured innovation ecosystem, echoing the message promoted at the Jericho summit.

In May, The Alternative Bank announced a non-interest funding framework for early-stage founders under its Innovation and Enterprise Support portfolio, targeting startups, digital artisans, and vocational youth ventures.

The bank explained that the programme was developed after observing that young innovators struggled to scale ideas because they lacked finance that aligned with ethical models.

Emerald Rose Foundation trains 20,000 Ondo women in entrepreneurship

The Emerald Rose Women Foundation has begun training more than 20,000 women across the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State in entrepreneurial and vocational skills. The programme, launched in Akure on Saturday, is designed to support women in areas such as digital literacy, event planning, soap making, food packaging, and human resources management.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Ms Iwagun Faith, explained that the initiative is targeted at empowering young women and opening up opportunities for growth. She noted that the programmes cover skill acquisition, leadership development, emotional support, advocacy, and confidence building aimed at advancing women’s empowerment.

“The foundation is positioned to address the social, economic, and psychological barriers that hinder young women from reaching their full potential,” Ms Iwagun said. She stated that the goal is to provide practical skills, offer hope, promote inclusion, and motivate girls to pursue their dreams without fear.

“We aim to equip young women with practical skills and knowledge, offer hope to the vulnerable, amplify the voices of the voiceless, eradicate stigma, and inspire girls to dream big and pursue their goals without fear or limitations,” she added. According to her, the training is ongoing and the number of beneficiaries will continue to grow over time. “As for now, we can’t specify the exact number of women we will train because this is a continuous programme. We have begun the training, and 20,000 women will benefit in areas such as digital literacy, event planning, soap making, food packaging, and human resources management.”

Ms Iwagun said the foundation was established from a desire to build confident, purpose-driven women capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

The launch also featured the public presentation of her new book titled Reputable Woman and Her Lifestyle: A Woman’s Guide to Discovering Her Worth and Achieving Success. She explained that the publication reflects her commitment to helping young women understand their value and navigate their journey toward success.

Yobe launches End-of-Year Food Basket outreach for vulnerable families

The Yobe State government has announced the rollout of its End-of-Year Food Basket Outreach to support vulnerable households during the festive season. According to officials, His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, directed the initiative “to strengthen community bonds and ensure families can celebrate Christmas with dignity, joy, and a sense of belonging.” The distribution will take place from 15th to 20th December 2025 in Potiskum, Gashua and Damaturu.

This year’s programme will prioritise orphans, widows, persons with special needs and households facing economic hardship. Each basket will contain essential food items tailored to meet basic family needs, particularly for low income earners and internally displaced persons. Authorities say the intervention reflects the Governor’s “continued commitment to human welfare, social support, and inclusive governance.”

State officials explained that community and religious leaders will participate in the selection and monitoring process to ensure accountability and transparency in line with AAP principles. More operational details are expected to be shared in the coming days.

The initiative comes as Yobe continues to face humanitarian challenges. In July, a National Bureau of Statistics report ranked the state among those with the highest multidimensional poverty burden, with large numbers of internally displaced persons still dependent on relief. Civil society groups earlier urged the government to “expand direct household support schemes,” saying previous aid reached too few vulnerable residents. The seasonal food basket programme is described by officials as a response to those concerns.

In October, flash floods displaced more than 15,000 households across Bade, Jakusko and Fune LGAs, forcing the state government to open emergency shelters and distribute food assistance. Governor Buni said the repeated shocks showed “the need for structured welfare support beyond disaster response.” The End-of-Year outreach builds on those earlier efforts, targeting families still recovering from losses and food insecurity during the flooding season.

Onigbongbo LCDA empowers 500 residents with tools and grants

Over 500 residents in the Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have received empowerment items including cash grants, sewing machines, grinding machines and freezers from the Executive Chairman of the LCDA, Moyosore Adebanjo. The distribution also featured hairdryers, solar lights, generator sets, clippers, CNG tricycles and ICT opportunities made possible through a partnership with the Industrial Training Fund.

Adebanjo said the programme showed his administration’s readiness to convert local challenges into opportunities for prosperity. He explained that the tools given to beneficiaries were aimed at helping them build long-term and sustainable livelihoods. He further announced plans to introduce the Onigbongbo Marshall Security Initiative, describing it as a community-based network that will strengthen neighbourhood safety and support existing security agencies.

Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, praised the initiative, calling it a strong step toward economic empowerment. According to him, the gesture reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to inclusive growth, youth development and community advancement across the state.

The State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, also expressed support for the programme. He commended Adebanjo for aligning with progressive values that place citizens’ welfare first. Ojelabi encouraged beneficiaries to make good use of their equipment and grants, saying they should apply the resources to improve their businesses and contribute to local development.

JAMB releases 2026 UTME registration process and common errors

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released detailed guidelines for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination registration process, along with common issues candidates may face. The announcement was shared on the official JAMB X handle on Sunday and seeks to help applicants prepare ahead of registration and avoid delays.

According to the advisory, the first step involves profile code generation. Candidates are advised to ensure their details on NIMC and other documents such as O’Level and A-Level results match. The Board explained that applicants must send NIN followed by a space and their 11 digit NIN number to 55019 or 66019. It cited an example stating, “NIN 00000011111 to 55019/66019.” JAMB added that once a profile code is created, it cannot be changed and the biodata linked to it is automatically retrieved from NIMC.

Key registration procedures

After generating the profile code, candidates are expected to proceed to the nearest JAMB office or an approved Computer-Based Test Centre to begin registration. The Board further stressed that applicants must purchase their e PIN only from authorised channels such as banks, online platforms or designated vendors at registration centres.

JAMB also highlighted the importance of using the correct registration template and cross checking entries before final submission. Candidates are urged to ensure their information is accurate at the point of entry.

Important warnings to candidates

The Board cautioned candidates to make all necessary corrections with NIMC early and confirm that such changes reflect on the portal before registering. It stated that unique identifiers such as GSM numbers and email addresses cannot be changed or shared, urging applicants to ensure they work properly ahead of registration.

The statement also noted that candidates encountering biometric issues should visit the nearest JAMB office, adding, “Do not allow any CBT Centre register you forcefully.” JAMB advised that a dual screen should be used during registration and that applicants must confirm their passport and biometrics are properly captured.

Common challenges and solutions

JAMB listed frequent profile code problems. For “Record not found,” the solution is to visit a NIMC office for validation. Where a wrong parameter is detected, candidates were told to resend the correct command. The Board also explained that if a NIN has already been linked to a GSM number, the applicant must retrieve that number to recover the profile code. In situations where NIMC cannot verify the NIN at the moment, candidates are advised to wait and retry later.

JAMB also confirmed that the 2026 UTME registration and sale of forms will run from Friday, January 31, 2026, to Saturday, March 8, 2026. The board urged candidates to complete their registration early, verify all personal details, and strictly follow the official guidelines to avoid common mistakes that could delay or invalidate their applications.

Yuletide: RCCG Tabitha Tent Feeds 1500 Abuja Residents

0

1,500 FCT residents smiled home on Sunday with food items, clothes, shoes, and other household supplies at an outreach organised in Garki, Abuja, weeks before the Yuletide. The beneficiaries received the items at the Tabitha Tent, an annual outreach of the Everlasting Arms Parish, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Garki, Abuja, where hundreds gathered in hope of relief as economic hardship continues to affect many families.

Some of the beneficiaries described the gesture as timely and a lifeline. Miss Fatima Adamu, who left the venue with rice, beans, and garri, said she felt relieved and uplifted. According to her, the support could not have come at a better time. “I feel very happy, thank you to the organisers, I really appreciate this,” she said, smiling as she carried her packages home.

Another beneficiary, Mr Marcus Danjuma, said the supplies would sustain him for weeks. “I got food, I am very happy for what God has done for me. This food will sustain me for a while and I really appreciate what God did for me,” he said. He prayed that God would open more doors for the organisers so they could continue their outreach.

Similarly, Miss Kadijat Badamasi, who attended the programme with her mother, said the event brought hope to her family. “I got rice, beans, garri and clothes, and we really appreciate,” she said, adding that the experience strengthened her faith in community support.

Addressing journalists at the event, Pastor Paul Haruna explained that the Tabitha Tent was created to extend fellowship to vulnerable persons regardless of tribe, region, or creed. He noted that the church provides food, clothing, bags, and even furniture, adding that God had continually supported the programme over the years. “We provide food, clothing, bags, furniture, and over the years God has been helping us. We are trusting God we will do more next time,” he said.

Haruna highlighted that hunger remains widespread across the country, making outreach efforts crucial. “As we can see, the hunger in the land is much and the best we can do is to reach out to the needy, and in our own very little way, as a church, we are giving this token to the less privileged,” he said. He added that over 1,500 people attended this year’s outreach and received food items such as rice, beans, garri, and clothes. He also appealed to government to reach vulnerable people with food, shelter, and clothing so that everyone could eat this season. “As we do so, may God bless every arm of government in Jesus name,” he said.

Assistant Pastor Ngozi Azodoh described the outreach as an opportunity for people to “shop without money,” noting that the programme reflects the heart of the church’s service to its community. “We call it shopping without money. It is at the heart of the service of the church to the people; what we do is to celebrate Jesus with our community,” she said. She explained that beyond material support, the church hoped the beneficiaries would experience spiritual encouragement. “Everyone is happy, it is an opportunity for us to minister to them physically and spiritually and we are hoping that in living the life of Jesus Christ, and sharing with them, they will come and see the love and goodness of Christ,” she added.

Azodoh pointed out that hunger existed long before recent hardship, noting that Tabitha Tent had operated for almost 20 years. She also said government could support the people more, even as she acknowledged existing efforts through initiatives. “I nominated two people for the Renewed Hope Support Initiative for the less-privileged people and they actually got N200,000 each and we are grateful to the government for that,” she stated.

The Coordinator of the programme, Mrs Modupe Ogundimu, also confirmed that the outreach had run for two decades, supported by individuals and groups. “We just want to say thank you to God and to everyone who has supported this initiative, and we pray God to bless them with joy, peace and love in the new year,” she said.
