FG approves 4000 telecom towers to improve security, rural connectivity

0

The Federal Executive Council has approved the rollout of 4,000 telecommunications towers to underserved communities across Nigeria in a move designed to boost national security, improve communication, and grow rural economies. The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, while briefing State House correspondents after the council meeting at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

Idris told journalists, “The Federal Executive Council has taken a decision that 4,000 of such towers be established or erected in these very underserved communities across this country.” He noted that the plan is expected to support security agencies and enable residents in rural areas to engage better with the digital economy. According to him, “Indeed, this will also help in fighting insecurity and enhancing commerce and economic activity amongst the people of those communities.”

The Minister explained that the move was motivated by a presentation from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, which showed that about 23 million Nigerians currently lack access to proper communication due to the absence of network infrastructure. Idris added, “Under that programme, about 4,000 towers will be erected in underserved communities.” He said the rollout is expected to significantly improve rural connectivity, stimulate commerce and enhance security surveillance in areas currently lacking network coverage.

For years, millions of people in remote parts of Nigeria have been unable to make calls, send messages, access emergency services or participate in digital transactions because voice and data services fade out in large rural zones. Security agencies also rely on existing base stations for emergency response systems like 112 and 761, as well as for cell-site triangulation and real-time coordination in difficult terrain. However, vandalism, high diesel costs, and multiple right-of-way and permit charges have made coverage expansion slow and expensive for operators.

President Bola Tinubu on November 27 declared a nationwide security emergency following increased cases of abductions, and announced fresh interventions such as recruiting 20,000 additional police officers, deploying forest guards and improving protection for schools, churches and mosques. Telecom operators have often urged the government to standardise right-of-way fees, guard infrastructure against vandalism, use hybrid solar systems for power, and support cost-saving tower sharing. The FEC decision is expected to support this push and improve the national emergency response system.

Idris also disclosed that the council approved the establishment of new agricultural mechanisation service centres across all six geopolitical zones. The centres, he said, will “support and boost agricultural mechanisation that will in turn also improve all year-round farming across communities in Nigeria.” The measure aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen food production, support farmers and reduce reliance on outdated manual methods.

In the health sector, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, presented new updates on the country’s vaccination campaigns. He stated that more than 14 million Nigerian girls have been immunised against the Human Papillomavirus, while nearly 30 million children received the measles–rubella vaccine within the past year. Salako noted that continued funding for primary healthcare and immunisation programmes will allow nationwide vaccination efforts to expand further in 2026.

According to Salako, the government has reinforced its focus on the Basic Health Care Provision Fund as part of wider reforms to improve service delivery. He said, “The commitment in the MTF to sustain funding for the basic health care fund means that more primary health care centres will be revitalised, in line with the agenda of Mr. President to put primary health care at the cornerstone of our health care delivery.” He revealed that more than 4,000 primary health centres have already been revitalised, with an additional 8,000 on the way.

Salako highlighted how improved funding has helped millions of young girls receive the Human Papillomavirus vaccine and allowed rapid rollout of the combined rubella and measles vaccine. He explained, “That commitment means that we can also scale that up in the coming year. It also means that the novel introduction of the combined rubella and measles vaccine, which has seen close to 30 million Nigerian children immunised in less than a year, can be scaled up in the coming year.” He added that the current programme reflects “Mr. President’s commitment to social welfare, which touches the average Nigerian directly.”

Speaking through the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon Inibehe Etukudo, the First Lady announced that 250 persons living with disabilities in each state and the Federal Capital Territory have already received N200,000 business recapitalisation grants aimed at supporting their businesses. She said the programme reflects the federal commitment to improve livelihoods for persons living with disabilities and support their inclusion in national development.

“Today, the Renewed Hope Initiative will provide the sum of Two Hundred Thousand naira N200,000 Business Recapitalisation Grants to Two Hundred and Fifty 250 Persons with Disabilities in each State and the Federal Capital Territory to support small business owners to recapitalise their existing businesses and strengthen their means of livelihood,” she stated. She added that the effort aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which promotes inclusive growth and shared prosperity, ensuring no one is left behind.

Senator Tinubu explained that each state and the FCT received N50 million for onward distribution to beneficiaries, extending support to a total of 9,500 Nigerians living with disabilities. In a further emphasis on inclusion, she announced that the empowerment programme, valued at N1.9 billion nationwide, will now hold on the 3rd of December every year to honour persons with disabilities.

“To all our beneficiaries, I encourage you to make good use of this opportunity. Let it be a seed that grows into something greater; a business that sustains you and your family,” she urged. The First Lady also expressed appreciation to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, and the First Lady Designate, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, for their support in hosting the event.

The State RHI Focal person, Mrs Emem Orok, praised Senator Tinubu for positively impacting lives through various RHI programmes in the state. She noted that the initiative had reached many vulnerable persons and continued to inspire hope among citizens.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, the Chairman of Ibeno Local Government Council, Hon Glory Effiong, and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Persons with Disabilities, Mrs Nnene Bassey. They commended Senator Tinubu for her compassionate commitment to inclusivity and financial support for vulnerable groups across the country.

A major highlight of the empowerment event was the symbolic presentation of credit support to some beneficiaries from the six clusters of PWDs and other eligible recipients, many of whom confirmed receiving bank alerts of N200,000 during the programme. The ceremony featured cultural performances by the Council for Arts and Culture, adding entertainment to the celebration of economic empowerment and national inclusion.

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has commended the Mashi Local Government Council for rolling out an extensive empowerment initiative targeted at youths, women, and vulnerable residents in the area. The programme was coordinated by the Executive Chairman of Mashi Local Government, Hon. Salisu Kallah Dan Kada, through the Education and Social Services Department. Governor Radda described the intervention as “a bold commitment to grassroots development” and an example of local leadership supporting the people directly.

The empowerment featured wide-ranging support items aimed at boosting livelihoods and strengthening small businesses. They included 21 motorcycles, 200 bags of groundnuts cake, 200 bags of soybeans, 200 bags of beans, and 100 support packages for tea and bread vendors. During his visit to the area, Governor Radda also paid a courtesy visit to the District Head of Mashi, Alhaji Kabiru Ibrahim Aminu, Iyan Katsina, where he engaged traditional leaders and ward heads. He stressed that traditional institutions play an important role in unity, success of government programmes, and community security. Speaking at the gathering, Hon. Salisu Yusuf Majigiri, Member representing Mashi/Dutsi Constituency, presented hundreds of new decampees from PDP to APC. He noted that the turnout reflected acceptance of Governor Radda’s leadership and reforms among the grassroots population. He said, “We sincerely thank Your Excellency for the continuous support and attention you continue to give to our people. What we are witnessing today goes beyond a simple empowerment programme—this is a demonstration of your genuine commitment to uplifting the living standards of ordinary citizens.”

He added, “Our people can clearly see the difference your administration is making. From improved security to social interventions and empowerment opportunities like this, the impact is felt in every ward and every village. Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Initiative Social Economic Empowerment Programme in Benue State to mark this year’s International Day of Persons With Disabilities. The event took place at the Government House in Makurdi, bringing together stakeholders, beneficiaries, and government officials.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Tinubu highlighted the importance of unity and empowerment, insisting that Nigeria becomes stronger when every citizen has the opportunity to contribute. She said the event was symbolic because it coincided with the global commemoration of the International Day of Persons With Disabilities and was being launched simultaneously across the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.

The First Lady announced that under the Renewed Hope Initiative, 250 Persons With Disabilities in each state and the FCT will receive N200,000 Business Recapitalisation Grants. According to her, this support is aimed at helping small business owners recapitalise their ventures and improve their means of livelihood. She further disclosed that each state, the FCT, and DEPOWA will receive N50,000,000 each for distribution to beneficiaries in their respective locations.

“In total, 9,500 Persons With Disabilities across Nigeria will benefit from this programme, amounting to One Billion, Nine Hundred Million Naira,” she stated. She explained that the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes inclusive growth and shared prosperity so that “no Nigerian is left behind, especially those whose needs are often overlooked”.

Senator Tinubu noted that in the past two years, the initiative had supported over 100,000 women traders and small business owners, including PWDs, through financial grants. She also highlighted other interventions of the RHI in agriculture, economic empowerment, education, health, and social welfare. According to her, these efforts are aimed at improving the well-being of families across the country.

“Our Social Investment Programmes have provided financial and material support to victims of floods, communal clashes, and disasters, as well as to the elderly, widows, and orphans of our fallen heroes,” she said. She added that through the RHI Monthly Food Outreach Scheme, food items have been delivered to 22 states and the FCT, including Internally Displaced Persons and vulnerable communities.

The First Lady encouraged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity and grow their businesses to sustain themselves and their families. She expressed appreciation to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and State Coordinator of RHI, Hon Scholastica Terngu Ben-Sor, for enabling the success of the programme in the state.

In a goodwill message, Director General of the Bureau for International Cooperation and Development, Dr Aondoaseer Leonard Angelo, praised Senator Tinubu for championing a programme that uplifts thousands of people living with disabilities and promotes sustainable livelihoods. He also commended Governor Alia’s commitment to policies that protect and empower PWDs.

According to Dr Angelo, the governor’s leadership contributed to the passage and signing of the Benue State Disability Rights Law, which guarantees legal protection and greater participation in social and economic life for persons with disabilities. “This commitment has translated into concrete action,” he said, adding that the state’s reforms are restoring hope among communities.

He stated that as Director General, he had witnessed how the governor’s policies opened space for partnerships, funding, and technical support from development actors interested in building an inclusive society in Benue. Dr Angelo said the empowerment of 250 beneficiaries in the state reflects a wider vision of creating a Benue where every resident has a fair chance to thrive regardless of ability.

He urged beneficiaries to embrace the programme as a seed for new opportunities and contribute meaningfully to the development of the state.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Ikwue Odachi Theresa, appealed to residents to show love and compassion to persons with disabilities. She said, “If each of us gives just a little more kindness, a little more patience, a little more understanding, we will create a world where no one feels forgotten or left behind”.

The event closed with expressions of gratitude from participants who welcomed the initiative as a timely intervention that addresses long-standing barriers faced by PWDs in the state and across the country.

Osun State recorded a major support gesture for vulnerable citizens as no fewer than 250 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) benefited from the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The event was held in Osogbo, the state capital, where beneficiaries received business grants aimed at improving livelihoods and encouraging self–reliance.

Speaking during the disbursement, the First Lady announced that each beneficiary would receive N200,000. She explained that the support was designed to reduce poverty among vulnerable and less privileged persons. Senator Tinubu, represented by Osun State First Lady, Titilola Adeleke, said the initiative serves as a business capitalisation grant to help PWDs start or expand their small businesses. She further noted that similar interventions had been delivered in all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.

According to her, the programme reflects the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes inclusive growth and shared prosperity. She said the initiative ensures that no Nigerian is left behind regardless of social or economic status. She also recalled that over the past two years, more than 100,000 women petty traders and small business owners, including PWDs, had benefited from direct financial grants to support business growth.

Senator Tinubu also revealed that the RHI Governing Board has resolved to make the empowerment scheme for PWDs an annual event. She said it will be held every December 3 to commemorate the International Day of Persons With Disabilities. “Today, the Renewed Hope Initiative will provide the sum of two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) Business Recapitalisation Grants to two hundred and fifty (250) Persons with Disabilities in each Station and the Federal Capital Territory to support small business owners to recapitalisation their existing businesses and strengthen their means of livelihood,” she stated.

In addition, she announced that each state in the federation, the FCT, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association will receive fifty million naira (N50,000,000) to distribute among beneficiaries in their areas.

Executive Secretary of the state Bureau of People Living with Disability, Rotarian Ayobami Oyetunde, thanked Senator Tinubu and the Governor’s wife for the gesture and urged recipients to invest the grants productively.
