The latest social investment programme offered a safe and supportive space for relaxation, social interaction, and free medical screenings to residents drawn from about 17 communities in the area.

During the outreach, various essential items were shared with beneficiaries. These included rechargeable lamps, cardigans, dual-power transistor radios that are battery-operated and rechargeable, Adire fabrics, double layer thermal insulator water flasks, beverages and milk, tea bags, disinfectants, compressor socks, jumbo shear butter creams, packs of bathing soap, detergents, and bags of Dangote Rice and Semovita. Cash incentives and take-home bags were also provided to support the beneficiaries further.

The Head of Dangote Cement for the Ibese Plant, Mr Ayyagari Subbaraidu, spoke at the event themed A Day Out with Senior Citizens, held within the plant premises. He said the initiative was created to enhance the emotional, social, and physical well-being of elderly residents. According to him, the programme, now in its third year, aims to address challenges faced by senior citizens, especially loneliness and limited social interaction, by offering a friendly environment for connection and access to health services.

“This annual event is specially curated to improve the social and emotional well-being of our senior citizens while offering essential medical checks and take-home items to support their quality of life,” he stated.

Mr Subbaraidu added that although ageing is a blessing, many elders still struggle with isolation. He explained that the outreach provides a platform for bonding, relaxation, and free health checks to help improve their daily lives. He also revealed that six persons living with disabilities were identified and given wheelchairs to support their movement and independence.

“With this year’s edition, we have now reached 150 elders and 11 persons with disabilities underscoring the company’s commitment to recognizing and uplifting vulnerable groups within our host communities. Our goal is to put smiles on the faces of our senior citizens in recognition of their contributions to society,” he said.

He expressed appreciation to the Ogun State government, community leaders, and partners for ensuring a peaceful environment that makes such outreach possible. He noted that this edition was organized in collaboration with Ore Ofe Clinic, Ilaro, a healthcare provider in Dangote Cement’s HMO network, to deliver full health screenings to all participants.

The Ogun State government, represented by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Ms Araba Adebukunola, praised the company’s unwavering commitment to community well-being and described the initiative as a model for corporate social responsibility in the region.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics has raised fresh concerns over the Federal Government’s failure to clear outstanding promotion arrears owed to polytechnic workers. The union said the situation is adding to the growing insecurity, rising economic hardship, and persistent threats to workers’ welfare across the country.

The National President of SSANIP, Philip Ogunsipe, made this known on Thursday during the 78th General Executive Council meeting of the union held at the Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde Hall, Labour House, Abuja. In his address, Ogunsipe decried what he described as “the prolonged delay in the release of the new Schemes and Conditions of Service for the Polytechnic sector and the failure to conclude the renegotiation of the 2010 Agreement, despite repeated assurances by government officials.”

He added that the union is also worried about the “non-release of the 2023 NEEDS Assessment Funds meant for infrastructural development in Polytechnics.” Ogunsipe condemned the recent unilateral submission of the reviewed Schemes of Service by the National Board for Technical Education to the Federal Ministry of Education, describing it as “a deviation from agreed procedures and a serious breach of trust with labour unions.”

According to him, several arrears remain unpaid, including promotion arrears, 25%/35% salary review arrears, wage award arrears, and the incomplete implementation of the new national minimum wage. He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene and address the challenges facing non-academic staff in Polytechnics, warning that neglecting these issues could lead to industrial unrest.

The National Secretary of SSANIP, Nura Gaya, also urged the Federal Government to take decisive action on the concerns affecting non-teaching staff. He encouraged members of the union to remain committed to their duties despite the difficulties.

In his remarks, the National Trustee of SSANIP, Godwin Ikhide, called on workers to maintain peak performance and advised labour unions to stay united as they pursue their shared goals.

SSANIP is pushing for improved welfare and better working conditions, pointing to delays in the release of new Schemes and Conditions of Service and the stalled renegotiation of the 2010 Agreement. The union is also insisting on the payment of all outstanding arrears and the full implementation of the new national minimum wage, warning that continued government inaction may trigger industrial unrest.

FAAN Denies Ongoing AVSEC Recruitment Circulating Online

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has issued a public notice warning Nigerians about a fake recruitment message circulating online. The agency said this information is completely false.

In a statement signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN explained that it is not conducting any AVSEC recruitment at the moment. The statement said, “We wish to categorically state that FAAN is not conducting any AVSEC recruitment at this time. The advertisement in circulation, including the link attached to it, is fake, misleading, and has no connection whatsoever with FAAN.”

FAAN advised the public to stay alert and avoid clicking unknown links or sharing personal details with unverified sources. The statement added, “The public is hereby advised to disregard the message and refrain from engaging with the link. It adds that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further screening and interviews.

She also reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, to deliver quality education for every child in Edo State. She said the Governor’s plan is to ensure that every child has access to the right learning tools to pursue any career path they desire. As part of the programme, Mrs. Anani held a discussion session with pupils on the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, focusing on digital safety. She educated them on how to stay safe online and offline, emphasizing body safety, consent, and the need to report any suspicious behaviour. He encouraged them to stay consistent in using the platform to strengthen their understanding of various subjects.

Dr. Iyamu also advised parents, guardians, and teachers to be mindful of how children use the tablets. He stated that they should listen to the children, be aware of any issues, and guide them in proper usage, especially by preventing others from misusing the tablets or bullying them through them.

The Member representing Edo State on the Board of NDDC, Rt. Hon. Patrick Aisowieren, represented by Mr. Michael Oladepo, described the collaboration between NDDC and Edo State as significant and beneficial. He said the partnership was made possible due to the empathy and commitment of Mrs. Anani, who ensured that children, parents, and mothers benefited from the initiative. He added that more collaborations were expected in other sectors.

He stated, “The importance of education cannot be overemphasized. The relevance and importance of this U-Lesson, it’s multifaceted. It is an app, it is an ICT tool to further strengthen and equip our children to perform exceptionally well. All that is required with their curriculum is in it. All that is required is for them to activate it and it takes them further and faster in their lectures, in their study, for the purpose of coming tops in their exams and have all it entails for them to come better.”

The Chairman of the Senior Secondary Education Board, Dr. Rita Erewele, expressed happiness that pupils across different educational levels were benefiting from the programme. WIEN Expands Programs to Guide Girls into Nigeria’s Energy Sector

The President of the Women in Energy Network, Eyono Fatayi-Williams, says the group is strengthening its efforts to prepare young girls for careers in Nigeria’s energy sector. She made this known on Tuesday during the 2025 Annual General Meeting of WIEN in Lagos, where members, partners and guests gathered to review the network’s progress and ongoing projects.

Speaking at the event, Fatayi-Williams reflected on WIEN’s recent initiatives aimed at promoting girls’ interest and participation in STEM and energy-related fields. She noted that the organisation has continued to use different platforms to inspire and guide young girls. According to her, through career talks, practical sessions and interactions with female role models, “we opened doors of possibility for young girls, helping them see energy and STEM not as distant dreams, but as attainable futures.”

She highlighted the network’s collaboration with NLNG in Port Harcourt, which led to the hosting of the Girls in STEM Career Fair. The event brought together students from five government secondary schools. Fatayi-Williams explained that it created a unique opportunity for the students to learn directly from women professionals in STEM and energy. She said, “The event offered career talks, mentorship sessions and interactive stories, giving young girls direct exposure to women professionals and career options in STEM and energy fields. The event was inspiring, helping the girls see first-hand that these careers are not just possible but attainable.”

Fatayi-Williams also spoke about WIEN’s broader strategy to nurture future women energy leaders through the Collegiate Mentorship Programme, which began in 2024. The programme was launched in partnership with Professor Rowena Torres of the University of the Philippines. As part of this effort, the Collegiate Community organised its first research webinar for the network and hosted a two-day Microsoft Excel masterclass aimed at improving members’ technical skills.

The president stressed the importance of mentorship and practical learning in building capacity for women in the sector. She said, “At the heart of WIEN’s mission is the belief that knowledge is power. Promoting women’s participation and leadership in the energy sector involves equipping them with the skills, insights and confidence to excel. As Michelle Obama reminds us, ‘The ability to learn, to understand, to be curious about the world around you, is the most powerful tool you can have.’”

Fatayi-Williams added that these initiatives form part of WIEN’s ongoing effort to empower the next generation of women leaders in energy and STEM. She also highlighted the network’s partnerships that support women-owned and women-led businesses. According to her, WIEN strengthened its support for these businesses through a new partnership with eTranzact International Plc, a major payment and technology infrastructure provider in Nigeria. She explained that through this partnership, corporate members and business owners will benefit from discounted FIRS e-invoicing solution rates. She said the initiative reflects a shared commitment to empowering women in business, easing compliance costs and supporting the competitiveness of women-led enterprises in Nigeria’s digital economy.

As WIEN marks its fifth anniversary, Fatayi-Williams emphasised the need for continuity and growth. She stated, “While we celebrate our successes, we also acknowledge the challenges that remain. Our story is still being written. The next chapters must be bolder, louder and even more impactful.”

She urged members to remain committed to advancing women and girls in energy. “As we look ahead to 2026, I encourage all of us to renew our vow to each other and to the future: to continue to dream big, set bold and defining goals, and continue breaking glass ceilings. Let us be reminded that WIEN is a movement for equality and inclusion, a movement for excellence, and a movement for women in energy,” she said.

NECA urges businesses to leverage Nigeria First Policy

0

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has urged private-sector operators to take full advantage of the federal government’s Nigeria First Policy to support enterprise growth and strengthen the country’s economic resilience. This position was reinforced during a high-level virtual Knowledge Sharing Session themed Nigeria First Policy: Unlocking Opportunities for Businesses and the Economy, which brought together senior executives from various sectors across the country.

During the session, NECA reiterated its commitment to promoting business competitiveness through ongoing advocacy and collaboration with government agencies. The Nigeria First Policy is designed to prioritise local production, increase the participation of Nigerian companies in public procurement, and support backward integration across industries. Participants were given a detailed breakdown of how the policy aims to boost industrial capacity and reduce external vulnerabilities.

Speaking at the event, the Director General of NECA, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, said the success of the policy depends largely on strong cooperation between the public and private sectors. He emphasised that businesses also have a responsibility to support the initiative. “The full potential of the Nigeria First Policy can only be realised if businesses proactively patronise locally made products, while the government continues to implement reforms that ease import dependency and stabilise the Naira,” Oyerinde said. He added that creating a more competitive and investor-friendly environment is critical, noting that local enterprises must lead efforts to drive industrialisation and value addition.

Government representatives at the session explained the objectives and operational structure of the policy. Olumuyiwa Ajayiade, director of the Industrial Development Department at the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, said the Nigeria First Policy aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on industrialisation, strengthening local content, and protecting the economy from global supply chain disruptions.

Adebowale Adedokun, director-general of the Bureau of Public Procurement, discussed the procurement and content requirements embedded in the policy. He said guidelines for implementation are being finalised and will be shared with NECA to enhance ongoing engagement with private-sector players. “The policy is designed to empower Nigerian businesses, improve product quality standards, and boost global competitiveness,” Adedokun noted.

From the private sector, Victoria Uwadoka, chairperson of NECA’s Committee on corporate communications and public affairs experts, highlighted the opportunities the policy creates, stressing that stronger participation could drive enterprise expansion, job creation, and wider economic transformation.
