Tinubu Approves Recruitment of 30,000 Police Officers

This update was announced in a State House press release on Sunday, following a high-level security meeting in Abuja. The meeting involved the police, the Air Force, the army, and the Department of State Services. The press release noted that “henceforth, police authorities will deploy them to concentrate on their core police duties.” It added that VIPs who still require protection will now request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

It stated that “in view of the current security challenges facing the country, President Tinubu is desirous of boosting police presence in all communities.”

Alongside the approval to recruit 30,000 new officers, the federal government is working with state governments to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.

SMDF, ORDF Partner to Develop Mining Finance Framework

0

The Solid Minerals Development Fund has announced a partnership with the Ores Reserves Development Forum to create a mining finance framework that will help address the challenges miners face in accessing funding for their operations. The executive director of SMDF, Fatima Shinkafi, revealed this in a statement released by her technical adviser, Abdulmajeed Amussah, on Monday in Abuja.

Amussah explained that financing remains one of the biggest challenges in the sector, largely due to limited investor confidence in geological and project data. He said the SMDF and ORDF are committed to closing this gap. As part of the effort, both organisations are collaborating to host a workshop for miners, financial institutions, regulators, government agencies, and industry professionals on the theme Building a Sustainable Mining Finance System for Nigeria.

According to the statement, the ORDF emerged from the Geological Society of Nigeria Roundtable 2.0, which examined the barriers slowing down the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector. The roundtable brought together experts from technical, regulatory, trade, and financial fields to discuss ways to unlock the country’s mineral potential. Amussah said the ongoing collaboration aims to strengthen the link between geological reporting, transparency, and access to finance.

In his remarks, the chairman of ORDF, Uba Malami, said the mining sector holds strong potential to boost Nigeria’s economic growth but stressed that coordinated efforts are required to fully harness it. He said many promising mining projects fail to secure funding because investors struggle to trust the available project data. Malami said, “This workshop will enable stakeholders to work together to build a transparent and reliable system that supports investment and long-term sector development.”

Amussah stated that a draft Mining Finance Framework will be produced at the end of the workshop. This draft will be reviewed and refined by a technical working group made up of representatives from key institutions in the mining value chain. He said the workshop is expected to identify the major constraints affecting mining finance in Nigeria and improve understanding of the role played by financial institutions in the sector.

He added that participants will also develop recommendations for incentives that can reduce risks for miners and investors. These include standardised reporting systems and frameworks that will guide the sector in the next phase. The workshop, set for December 9, will cover areas such as the role of mining finance in industrial development, mineral resource reporting standards, and the financing pathway from exploration to production.

It will also explore the policy, regulatory, and market incentives needed to improve mining activities, along with the practical design of an efficient mining finance system. Participants will be guided on data and reporting requirements for accessing finance and introduced to due diligence expectations as projects advance. The programme aims to strengthen transparency, risk mitigation, and investment readiness across the mining finance ecosystem.

Earlier in the year, the SMDF partnered with the Nigerian Association of Securities Dealers on the OTC Securities Exchange to organise webinars focused on increasing capital market participation in Nigeria’s mining sector.

Jobberman Lagos Career Fair Attracts Over 1,600 Young Nigerians

Over 1,600 young Nigerians gathered in Oregun, Ikeja, for the Jobberman Lagos Career Fair 2025 with the theme Innovation and Creativity: Catalysts for Opportunities. The Creative Economy edition brought together aspiring creatives, employers, industry leaders and government representatives for a full day of learning, networking and career advancement. The fair featured masterclasses, panel discussions, fireside chats and on-the-spot interviews, all aimed at bridging the gap between talent and opportunity in Nigeria’s growing creative sector. Organised by Jobberman Nigeria in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the event served as a launchpad for young creatives seeking new career paths and practical guidance.

The fair highlighted the rapid growth and potential of Nigeria’s creative economy and gave participants a platform to explore new opportunities across different creative fields. In his opening remarks, Olamide Adeyeye, country head of programmes at Jobberman Nigeria, spoke on the transformational purpose of the fair. “Today, we gather not just for another event, but for a movement, one that celebrates the ingenuity, resilience and boundless potential of young Nigerians driving the creative heartbeat of our nation,” he said. “Our goal at Jobberman is simple but profound, to connect talent to opportunity, and to transform potential into prosperity. This fair stands as a testament to that mission,” he added.

Adeyeye noted that Nigeria’s creative economy is already a $4.7 billion sector but many young creatives still face barriers to entry. He said the fair was designed to address these challenges by providing access to jobs, mentorship, capital and the skills needed to succeed in the industry.

The keynote address was delivered by Chude Jideonwo, host of WithChude and Founder of Joy Inc., who spoke passionately about innovation and creativity as catalysts for opportunities. His message encouraged authenticity, boldness and relationship-building among young creatives. One statement he echoed repeatedly was “Overtaking is now allowed,” which set the tone for motivational stories and practical insights shared throughout the day.

Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, delivered a goodwill message that emphasised the government’s support for young people. “Giving the youths that platform to be able to compete on a global scale is essential, and of course the only way to do it bigger and better is by involving the government, which is why I’m here as your commissioner for youths,” he stated. He added that the state recognised the importance of creating an enabling environment for young creatives. “When I was approached in my office about this initiative, I knew immediately that this was an opportunity we couldn’t miss. Lagos State is committed to creating an enabling environment where our young creatives can not only survive but thrive and compete globally,” he said.

A major panel session moderated by JayOnAir featured experts including Amanda Jaiyeola, Dr Bunmi Kole-Dawodu, Doyinsola Atanda-Obalakun, Ola Cardoso and Millie Slade. They discussed creativity and innovation as forces shaping new opportunities, shared personal experiences and offered guidance on navigating Nigeria’s evolving creative space.

One of the most notable moments at the fair was when a National Youth Service Corps member, Valentine Okoh, secured a job on the spot with one of the employers. “I can’t believe this is happening. I didn’t even plan to be here. We were mobilised to come here from my CDS. I decided to just talk to some employers and one of them started asking more questions. Just like that, I got a job in Operations,” he said.

Six finalists from the Pitch Yourself in 30 Seconds online contest were also interviewed by several HR professionals, giving them a chance to be hired immediately. One of the finalists, Ndu Onyinyechi Grace, secured a placement after impressing a top employer. She expressed her excitement, saying, “I still can’t believe this is real. When I entered that pitch contest, I did not think it would lead to this moment. Standing before those employers today, I gave it my all, and to walk away with a job offer feels like a dream come true. This is proof that opportunities like the Jobberman Career Fair can truly change lives. I’m grateful to Jobberman, the organisers, and my new employers for believing in my potential. This is just the beginning for me.”

Throughout the event, the keynote speaker and facilitators delivered messages that resonated with participants. Statements such as “You don’t have to quit your job but you have to quit playing small. Permit yourself to be presumptuous,” “Don’t network; it’s a scam. Build relationships,” and “Turn your frustration into a story. Turn it into content. The world will try to make you small. Don’t shrink, expand,” encouraged creativity, confidence and resilience.

The fair also included spotlight sessions where programme alumni and innovators shared their career journeys, including Grace Emelahor, an event compere and voiceover artist. A masterclass by Media Personality Tomike Adeoye focused on Monetising Your Voice, while other workshops covered visual storytelling, fashion, remote work, mentorship, ideation and finance for business growth.

Over 90 employers set up recruitment booths at the job fair zone, each hiring for at least two roles. The fair also provided tailored support for women, internally displaced persons and persons with disabilities, reinforcing Jobberman’s commitment to inclusive opportunities.

In his closing remarks, Babajide Anjorin, Head of Marketing at Jobberman Nigeria, thanked partners and participants and stated that the fair represents an ongoing movement to connect young Nigerians with opportunities in the creative economy. As the event came to an end, the message remained clear that young Nigerians will shape the future of work in Africa through creativity, innovation and determination.

The BATN Foundation has awarded N10m to six young agribusiness leaders, marking the celebration of the 2025 winners of its Farmers for the Future Programme during the Agribusiness Dialogue Session held in Lagos. The organisation said the awards were presented at the biennial session, which focused on the theme “Is the Smallholder Farmer Financeable?” and brought together stakeholders to discuss the future of agricultural enterprise in Nigeria.

In a statement, the foundation explained that the Farmers for the Future initiative was introduced to change how young people view agriculture by presenting it as a viable and scalable business option rather than a last resort. It noted that the programme was created in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps to inspire and empower serving youth corps members. According to the statement, the initiative is open to corps members with innovative agribusiness ideas or existing ventures and provides equity-free grants, mentorship opportunities, technical support and market linkages.

The foundation said, “Through this model, the BATN Foundation actively addresses unemployment, builds youth capacity and positions agriculture as a viable career path for young Nigerians.” It added that the 2025 edition attracted some of the country’s most promising agripreneurs, who went through a transparent and rigorous selection process.

At the end of the competition, six finalists emerged as winners. Daniel Akogwu Jacob of Aretecom Limited secured the top position and received N3m to expand his agribusiness. Emmanuel Mary of Zibah Foods and Akinloye John of Geentead Farm NG were awarded second place, each earning N2m. The third-place position was shared by three entrepreneurs: Ikhahon Robinson of Heabron Farm Ltd, Adetuberu Sikeade of Lycos Nutrients Enterprises and Haruna Godwin of Yaroson Agro Business, with each receiving N1m.

The statement added that the winners will also receive capacity building, business development guidance and inclusion in the F4F alumni network, offering long-term access to partnerships and additional support beyond the competition. It emphasised that the programme aims to create lasting benefits that go beyond financial assistance.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, the General Manager of the BATN Foundation, Oludare Odusanya, said the goal of the programme is to reshape how young Nigerians approach agriculture. He stated, “The vision of Farmers for the Future is to show young Nigerians that agriculture is not just survival; it is innovation, enterprise and opportunity. By supporting youth with the right financing, mentorship and networks, we are building a new generation of agripreneurs who will drive food security, create jobs and power Nigeria’s economic diversification.”

Odusanya added that the programme has already shown strong results since its launch. He noted that past winners, including Pemnia Wellness, have used their grants to move from prototype to market, secure regulatory approvals, expand their product lines and engage women farmers in their supply chains. He said these achievements prove the foundation’s belief that empowering young people is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the country’s agricultural sector.
