Airtel launches smartphone financing programme for 4G upgrade

0

Airtel Nigeria has launched a Smartphone Financing Programme aimed at expanding digital inclusion and reducing the digital divide across the country. The telecom company says the initiative will help millions of Nigerians currently using 2G and 3G devices upgrade easily to fast 4G connectivity, using affordable financing options that support wider access to mobile technology and digital services.

According to Airtel, the programme will begin with the Itel A50 smartphone, a high-performing and reliable device designed to offer an improved mobile experience for users across Nigeria. The financing model allows eligible customers to receive the smartphone after making an initial down payment of either N19,000 or N21,000, depending on the offer available at the point of onboarding.

To benefit, customers must be active Airtel subscribers and are required to check their eligibility by dialling the *492# USSD code. Once approved, final onboarding will take place at any Airtel-owned retail shop. The company emphasised that all payments, including weekly instalments, will be processed through SmartCash, Airtel’s mobile money platform that supports secure transactions. Customers must also have a registered SmartCash account and valid identification such as NIN, Voter’s Card, or Driver’s Licence. As part of the verification process, users are also asked to give consent for data processing by Intelligra to confirm financing eligibility.

Speaking during the unveiling of the scheme, the chief executive of Airtel Nigeria, Mr Dinesh Balsingh, said, “Connectivity is opportunity, and smartphones are the key that unlocks it. Through the Airtel Smartphone Financing Programme, we are enabling more Nigerians to access 4G technologies, experience the full benefits of digital inclusion without financial strain, and transform the way they learn, work, and live. This initiative goes beyond providing devices; it is about empowerment, progress, and building a truly connected future.”

The Director of Marketing for Airtel Nigeria, Mr Ismail Adeshina, added that the company’s goal is to create a more inclusive digital environment. He said, “Our mission is to democratise access to technology by removing financial barriers. With this programme, customers can now afford quality smartphones without the burden of full upfront payment. By leveraging SmartCash and intelligent scoring systems, we are creating a sustainable model for inclusive digital growth.”

Federal Government Reaffirms Support for Kwara Women Farmers

The federal government has restated its commitment to supporting women farmers in Kwara as part of efforts to strengthen food security in the state. The pledge was made by Faith Agu, director at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Kwara, during an advocacy visit by the Small-Scale Women Farmers Organisation of Nigeria and the Budget Committee Group.

Ms Agu said the ministry is ready to give women farmers access to empowerment programmes and government support schemes that promote sustainable agriculture and improved yields. She noted she was aware of inputs distributed to SWOFON members in other states and urged members in Kwara to be patient as more interventions are expected.

She added that upcoming programmes of the ministry would also involve persons with disabilities to ensure inclusive agricultural development and equal access to national farming opportunities.

In his remarks, Abdurrahman Ayuba, coordinator of the Scaling Up Public Investment in Agriculture project under ActionAid, said women are often sidelined in agricultural planning despite their important role in food production. He appreciated past interventions from the ministry but called for more targeted efforts that directly address the needs of women farmers.

Ayuba said more attention should be given to climate-resilient agriculture, irrigation technology for dry-season farming, and strategies to reduce post-harvest losses through improved processing and storage systems. He explained that these areas are essential for long-term food security and economic stability.

During a visit to the Kwara State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, the team was received by administrative officer Aminah Jidah, who reaffirmed the state government’s support for livestock rearing and production. She said L-PRES is prepared to assist women involved in livestock activities and also train those who want to venture into the sector.

Ms Jidah explained that the project conducts periodic training sessions to keep farmers updated on livestock practices. She noted that 30 per cent of training slots are allocated to women, describing it as proof of the project’s gender-balanced approach. She encouraged women farmers to reach out to L-PRES whenever they need support to increase productivity.

Earlier, SWOFON coordinator Modupe Suleiman called for targeted support to meet the practical farming needs of women. The Budget Committee Group, made up of 12 organisations under the SUPIA project, continues to review annual budgets to push for inclusive agricultural financing in Kwara.

Ododo Approves Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up in Kogi State

Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo has approved the full implementation of the Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up in Kogi State, marking a major step toward improving women’s economic empowerment and local development. The Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up, a Federal Government initiative supported by the World Bank, is designed to boost women’s livelihoods through better access to financial services, entrepreneurship support, and stronger community networks that encourage sustainable economic growth. This move aligns with high-value development goals such as financial inclusion, poverty reduction, and community-based economic empowerment.

The State Project Coordinator, Dr. Esther Ameadaji, speaking on behalf of the State Project Coordinator’s Unit, praised Governor Ododo for endorsing the rollout of the project across the three senatorial districts. According to her, the project will begin in Okene Local Government Area in Kogi Central, Yagba East Local Government Area in Kogi West, and Dekina Local Government Area in Kogi East. She described the Governor’s approval as a demonstration of his “visionary leadership, steadfast commitment to women’s empowerment, and continuous support for inclusive economic initiatives.”

Dr. Ameadaji explained that the Governor’s decision reflects his concern for the socioeconomic progress of women and his desire to ensure sustainable development across all communities in the state. She noted that “The Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP) is a strategic long-term partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Bank to support the government’s goal of ensuring gender equality.”

She added that the project’s structure is unique, stating that “This project’s design is the first of its kind to be implemented in Nigeria and Kogi State with the introduction of a model- Women Affinity Groups where existing women groups will be institutionalized and new groups will be formed to enable women gain easy access to the empowerment program.” The Women Affinity Groups approach aims to create a stronger foundation for financial empowerment, improved credit access, and skill development.

Dr. Ameadaji highlighted that the project will help remove barriers that limit women’s financial stability and economic participation. She said, “This project will address barriers to women’s prosperity and build social assets for women’s economic participation which is critical for inclusive poverty reduction in Nigeria.” She further explained that the NFWP plans to achieve these goals by applying strategies that improve economic outcomes for women and strengthen household and community well-being.

She encouraged women aged 18 and above across Kogi State to participate actively in the Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up. She described the initiative as a special opportunity to improve livelihood activities, increase household income, and contribute to the state’s economic transformation.

The Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up introduces a new phase of empowerment for women in Kogi State, equipping them with the tools to build sustainable businesses, support their families, and contribute to inclusive economic growth.

Edo Government Distributes 250 Clean Coal Stoves to Women

The Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, has empowered women in the Edo South Senatorial District with 250 clean coal stoves, pots and cash support to help them buy charcoal. The items were distributed through the Office of the First Lady during an event held at the Urhuokpota Hall in Benin City, with a focus on improving health, reducing energy costs and supporting environmental sustainability across local communities.

According to the Coordinator of the Office of the Edo First Lady, Edesili Okpebholo Anani, the initiative was created to encourage healthier and safer cooking options for women who still rely on traditional cooking methods. She explained that the introduction of clean coal stoves will help reduce smoke exposure, strengthen public health, and support low-income families dealing with high fuel prices. She said the programme is part of a broader support plan designed to uplift women and make daily cooking more affordable.

Mrs. Anani said, “The provision of these clean coal stoves represents a deliberate step towards reducing our carbon footprint, mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting sustainable development across Edo State. It aligns perfectly with the vision of His Excellency, Sen. Monday Okpebholo-led administration to build a more resilient, environmentally conscious, and self-sustaining society, where every individual has the opportunity to live, work, and thrive in dignity.”

She explained that the empowerment programme is being carried out in partnership with the BeLiEF & Care Foundation, her personal project, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. She added that the collaboration shows their shared commitment to tackling the challenges of environmental degradation and climate change. She highlighted that clean and efficient cooking tools do not only improve the health of women and children but also support economic empowerment for families dealing with rising energy costs.

Mrs. Anani restated the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable families across the State with practical tools that improve living standards. She said, “His Excellency, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, the Executive Governor of Edo State, is a passionate and visionary leader who is deeply committed to the well-being of all citizens in our dear State. His empowerment initiatives are specifically designed to reach and support the most vulnerable members of our society, providing them with the necessary tools and resources to improve their lives.”

She also thanked partners and stakeholders, especially the Ministry of Science and Technology, for supporting the project. She encouraged all beneficiaries to use the clean stoves responsibly to help build a healthier environment and contribute to a brighter and more sustainable future for upcoming generations in Edo State.

The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Etin-Osa Ogbeiwi, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Jonathan Ukpebor, said the donation of the clean coal stoves is aimed at reducing poverty and supporting low-income earners who struggle with the cost of cooking gas. He said, “The donation of 250 units of clean stoves to 250 families across Edo State by the National Agency for Science and Engineering, is a welcome development.”

He added that the initiative is supported by the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, in collaboration with the First Lady of Edo State, Edesili Okpebholo Anani, under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Green Energy Technology programme for sustainable development. He said the use of clean stoves is becoming more important because of the rising price of cooking gas nationwide.

He said, “There has been a growing demand for clean stoves and affordable cleaner cooking stoves across Nigeria because of the high rising prices of cooking gas. The clean stove is environmentally friendly, reduces air pollution, keeps our cooking costs low, and also creates jobs in marketing and sales opportunities.” He urged stakeholders, donors and institutions to work together in promoting technological solutions that empower women and families.

The Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Gabriel Iduseri, represented by his Chief of Staff, Ebegue Evans Igho-Osagie, thanked Mrs. Anani for choosing Oredo as the host for the empowerment programme. He praised her past community projects, her strong communication efforts on social platforms and her dedication to supporting women in local communities. He prayed for God’s guidance and strength for her work.

The wife of the Oredo Local Government Chairman, Blessing Iduseri, also expressed appreciation for the First Lady’s efforts in supporting vulnerable families and prayed for her continued success. She noted that the empowerment will make a meaningful difference for many women who struggle with daily household needs.

Some of the beneficiaries, including Blessing Irebe, Eseosa Uwaifo and Catherine Adams, thanked Mrs. Anani for the clean stoves, pots and cash support. They prayed for her continued upliftment and described the gesture as timely support during a period of rising household expenses.

Paystack suspends Co-founder Ezra Olubi over misconduct allegations

0

Paystack has suspended its co-founder and chief technology officer, Ezra Olubi, following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a subordinate. The allegation began circulating on social media on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, and quickly attracted wide attention. The company confirmed the suspension, stating it has opened a formal investigation into the claims, a move that has generated major discussion across Nigeria’s fintech sector and the global payments industry.

In its statement, the company said, “Paystack is aware of the allegations involving our Co-founder, Ezra Olubi. We take matters of this nature extremely seriously. Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation.” Paystack added that, “Out of respect for the individuals involved and to protect the integrity of the process, we will not be commenting further until the investigation is complete.” This announcement gained strong traction as users across digital platforms revisited Olubi’s past activity online.

The allegation also revived dozens of decade-old tweets shared between 2009 and 2013, including sexually explicit jokes about colleagues, comments describing physical reactions during meetings, and posts referring to minors and sexualised anime characters. The old posts resurfaced on Thursday and spread rapidly across X, with many users questioning the culture of accountability within the tech ecosystem.

One archived tweet from May 23, 2011, read: “Monday will be more fun with an ‘a’ in it. Touch a coworker today. Inappropriately.” A screenshot of another resurfaced tweet included censored content about a young girl and a reference to an offensive claim about minors. These tweets, originally posted years before he co-founded Paystack, have now become central to the public discussion. In response to the renewed attention, Olubi deactivated his X account on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

Paystack, which was founded in 2015, is one of Africa’s most influential fintech companies and is widely recognised for its role in expanding digital payments across the continent. The company became one of Y-Combinator’s earliest African investments, and its 2020 acquisition by Stripe for $200 million remains one of the biggest exits in African tech history. Many of its alumni have gone on to build companies in logistics, fintech, and financial infrastructure, leading to strong coverage across global business and financial news platforms.

“In line with our internal policies, we have established a fair, transparent, and structured review process to conduct a thorough investigation,” Paystack said. “This process is guided by our policies, our values, and our commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all employees.”

Olubi previously received the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger from former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was among 450 recipients at the time, bringing the total number of national honours awardees to 5,341 since 1963. This is a developing story.
